[LegacyUG] Male Children Changes Name by Deed Poll

2008-11-23 Thread Mark K

How do I show that the male child changes his name by deed poll.
I have shown his children with his new name (as the birth certificates) but not
sure what to do about his surname. I currently show both in the surname field
with his birth name normal and new name in brackets.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname after divorce on reports

2008-11-23 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
So how do the AKAs show in reports? Don't the women still show up with their
birth names? And when Jane Smith is shown married to John Doe, don't you
know her surname is now Doe? It seems like a waste of time to bother with
this. Only if she retains her birth name would I make a note of it. I do,
however, use the AKA field for the name a person used most commonly,
particularly when it is not an obvious shortening of the given name. My
niece, for instance, goes by "Red", although her given name is Kristin.

I concur, and I happen to be one of those who do so wish to put married
names in the AKAs. After all (even today) most women use their married name
for longer than their maiden name.

Several in my files have gone through divorces - and returned to a
maiden name (or previous married name) - through the courts. But
reports show the divorces surname since that was the last one that was
legal. Any way to change the legal last name? This would also apply
to a legal name change of any kind.

Ideas??

RE: [LegacyUG] Surname after divorce on reports

2008-11-23 Thread ronald ferguson

Keith,

I believe you to be correct here. I have always considered that AKAs are
primarily for legal names, such as those given after the registration of the
birth, through marriage or by deed-poll.

I also use them where there are standard(?) spelling variations due to
illiteracy eg. "Hayes" and "Heyes" which for the same person may vary in parish
registers, birth, marriage, death certificates etc. Both names being perfectly
valid.

I do not use them for nick-names, or what one might call familiar names such as
"Dan" for "Daniel", "Jim" for "James" and so on, as I consider that is what the
quoted name option is for.

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing a Bibliography Report and Footnotes Report

2008-11-23 Thread Leon Chapman
You need to select Reports > All Reports and select a report
Ancestors, Descendants, Descendant Narrative for example - assume
Descendant.

Then select Report Options button at bottom of Options for Descendant Books
and then select the Sources Tab.

There you have options to print a Bibliograhpy, Footnotes, etc.

RE: [LegacyUG] Upgrading to Vers. 7.0

2008-11-23 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Keith:

Do you have a secret update or something?? When I produce a report,
identical sources repeat for every instance when they're cited. A
1-generation report that should have about a dozen sources suddenly has 45.
When the report is created as an RTF file or opened in Word much of the
source formatting is lost while the source count increases to 83. I hardly
consider this "fixed." (Using 7.0.0.55)

Of course, if you know a way around the problem I'd love to hear it!

MANY of the problems are solved - even in the sourcing. I believe
there will probably be an update before Christmas although that is
only my thinking. Easiest install is to go to the LEGACY HOME tab
within the program and look to the right for the UPDATE. It appears
to stall at about 27% complete - be patient - it will go on and
finish.

Enjoy

Re: [LegacyUG] "Master" versus "Geo" location in the Master Locations Geo Database

2008-11-23 Thread Jenny M Benson

Cathy Vallevieni wrote
There are three sections and each has a choice for "Master" and "Geo".
I read the "Help" but still could not understand what the differences
are and when to select Master and when to select Geo.

The Master selections are what you currently have in your Master
Locations list. The Geo selections are what the Geo Location Database
entry is. You can choose, in each section, whether you want to use your
version or the version in the Geo Location Database.

So, for example, I have an entry in my Master Locations list which reads
"" . On that 3-section screen, this
location shows as:

Master:
Geo: Clifton, Passaic, New Jersey, USA

Master:
Geo: Clifton, Passaic, NJ, USA

Master: N405152.0506 W0740946.313
Geo: N405130 W0740951

In the first instance, I will opt to retain the Master version because
the <> indicate to me that I have not proved this location, but
calculated it from other information.

In the second instance, I will again retain the Master version because I
want to retain the <> and just abbreviating New Jersey doesn't make much
difference.

In the third instance, I might opt to select the Geo version because
it's probably more accurate and I don't need all the decimal places.

Hope that makes it clear for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Upgrading to Vers. 7.0

2008-11-23 Thread Heather Stovold
I'll have a go at answering your questions congrats on your Christmas
present to yourself.

To your question about all the bugs being worked out - well, it would be
impossible to EVER say that ALL the bugs have been worked out on any
software - but I think most of the big ones have. I think there are some
reporting ones still, but don't really keep track.

For downloading - I don't think there was anything too special. I usually
choose to download the whole thing to my computer and install from there. I
would do a backup of all your databases BEFORE switching to V7 - just in
case.

You don't need to uninstall the previous version if you are going to install
it to the same location V6 was installed, or if you are going to use both
versions. (There isn't generally a need to use more than one version - I
can think of a couple of reasons, but generally you wouldn't want to.) If
you want to install V7 to a different place than V6 was - then I would
uninstall V6

When you open your existing data files in V7, they will go through a
conversion process. It is straightforward, and has no issues that I am
aware of. You won't be able to use that file in V6 anymore. (Note, if you
use the Clooz program and use the same data file in Legacy and in Clooz
(linked data) - the Clooz program doesn't recognize V7 files so you
would want to make a copy of your datafile to use in Clooz before you open
the file in Legacy V7 - and then keep them seperate. If you don't use
Clooz, then don't worry about this note)

Where you install the program is up to you - works no matter where you
install it.

Hope this helps!

RE: [LegacyUG] Upgrading to Vers. 7.0

2008-11-23 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Leona:

No, the bugs most certainly have *not* been worked out--but I surely hope
they will be exterminated by Christmas. Although I like the concept of
SourceWriter very much, v7 makes a terrible botch of sources in reports.

When you download v7 it will overwrite your old v6. And once you open your
database in v7 you can't take it back to v6 unless you saved a copy. Some
users have gone back to v6 (Sherry posted instructions), and some of us are
just gritting our teeth and hoping for a new update--Soon! In fairness,
though, I should say that there seem to be quite a few users who are not
affected by the bugs. Much depends on what you do with the data--produce a
web site, print books, post gedcoms, etc.

[LegacyUG] Surname after divorce on reports

2008-11-23 Thread GeoSci
Several in my files have gone through divorces - and returned to a
maiden name (or previous married name) - through the courts. But
reports show the divorces surname since that was the last one that was
legal. Any way to change the legal last name? This would also apply
to a legal name change of any kind.

Ideas??

Re: [LegacyUG] Ghost spouse

Hello Jennifer and Evert
I think I have solved the problem
I had the option of Replace wife's name with husband's Surname in the index view

When I selected the option =Don't generate Married names = it removes the names
from what I thought was a ghost spouse

Re: [LegacyUG] Ghost spouse

2008-11-23 Thread Evert van Dijken
If she isn't married and there are no children, just add a spouse with
a name which is easy to remember.
Remove the marriage link (Right click on the marriage bar) and after
the marriage link is removed you can delete the dummy husband. Don't
know if this works.

[LegacyUG] "Master" versus "Geo" location in the Master Locations Geo Database

2008-11-23 Thread Cathy Vallevieni
Can someone tell me what is the difference between "Master" and "Geo"
on the following screen in Legacy Deluxe Version 7.0.0.55:

View
Master List
Master Locations List
Select a Location and click the globe (Geo Options Menu)
Geo Location List
Search a location then click Select which takes you to a screen
titled "Merge Location"

There are three sections and each has a choice for "Master" and
"Geo". I read the "Help" but still could not understand what the
differences are and when to select Master and when to select Geo.

Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ghost spouse

2008-11-23 Thread Jennifer Trahan
John,

Is Catherine supposed to be married? Who is her husband supposed to be? I had
the exact same problem with the preferred marriage references. I had a ghost
spouse called Unknown by Legacy (Unknown actually showed up in family view in
the space where his name should have been). However, the person married to
Unknown was actually not married. I deleted the marriage and then selected the
option to fill in all empty MRINs before creating new ones. After that, when I
would select this individual from the index and then go to her family view, the
new couple with her old MRIN would show up in family view. That's when I did
check/repair, which fixed everything. I got the same message as you did about
the preferred marriage references.

Jennifer

Hello Evert
Yes I did and I don't get the message now. However when I access the family
1323 it does not show up in the marriage list. But the spouse Catherine DEVINE
shows in the Name List and the index
When I go to the family file for her and click on Marriage Info (which is
blank) it shows Catherine as wife married name without husbands name

It's a good idea to run another Check/Repair after you verify the items in this
file.

Wouldn't the easiest way be to just create another Master Source
"Correspondence, Joe Bloggs<->Fanny Adams"

I could do that, and almost certainly would if I had several instances
of correspondence between 2 particular other people. Being a dedicated
lumper, it goes against my grain to do that if it means numerous Master
Sources each relating to just 1 item! So far, that's mostly the case.
