Re: [LegacyUG] Does anyone know how convert Family Tree Maker - Version 1.1 (MS-DOS) to GENCOM or later file formats?
File ExportEntire File (choose a file name - whatever you want); In the save as file type click on the down arrow for the dropdown box and choose - GEDCOM (*GED) Then when you can tell Legacy to look for you Name.ged file to open. After that in Legacy go to View - Tree Finder and notice all the unlinked people you have. Print out a Potential Problems Report. I suggest these steps because of all the things that a person could never see in FTM. Have fun. Legacy is great. Brandon, I still have FTM v3.0 on CD, which was published in 1995. I began with your version but no longer have it. If you want to send me your file attached to an email, I'll try to get it moved up to version 3. I still have several versions of the program but no longer have them installed. There is no mention of what v3 adds to the prior version so I don't know if it will recognize your file but I'm encouraged because version 3 still calls the program FamilyFreeMaker, not FTW. I'll install my oldest version and see if it recognizes your file. Then we can go from there. my email is ml...@sbcglobal.net Mary - Original Message - From: blbrown_teac...@live.com Gary, Yes, I originally bought that Family Tree Program - worked it and left it in a box. I have the original documentation. All Family Tree Maker software company would say is that there is probably a conversion utility in the version right after 1.1 that might change the file from FTM to FTW (windows) and that FTW files convert very well to GENCOM. Software from earlier versions of FTM was owned by bourderbond (SP) and now FTM is a separate software label not having rights to those earliest versions. I know that it's not a Legacy software problem but a friend thought they heard someone had success using Legacy to convert old FTM files. I'm probably going to have to continue to retype all info from my hard copies . . . I just don't have that much time left to do this. Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, the program is called Family Tree Maker 1.1 (and perhaps some or all later versions). In the first answer you received Dawn was assuming you have the program. If not and you got the file from someone else, see if they can export a GEDCOM for you. Failing that you can try to find someone with FTM who can convert it for you (I'm sure there are some on this list), or contact FTM support for help. FTM 1.1 is probably about 20 years old now so it is really not a Legacy problem. Re: [LegacyUG] DropBox, after using for a few days
Hi Erin I know you addressed your question to Janis, but I thought I'd jump in anyway, with a possible answer for you... Dropbox, the free part of it, only allows you to have 2GB of space so you will want to keep that in mind when you decide on what files to put in your Dropbox. To sync my genealogy files, I needed more space than that, so I bit the bullet and paid for the extra space. Anyway, I now keep my entire Surnames folder in my Dropbox. That way, I can link to any file like a census, from within Legacy, and that link will be preserved on the other computer I am using, as well. Any additions I make to the files in my Surname folder (like a newly found and downloaded census from Ancestry, for example) will be accessible to me for addition into Legacy from EITHER compute I choose to use. I keep my photos separately on my computer. Using a Mac, they all go into a program called iPhoto, which, unfortunately, stores its database in one large file and likes to look for that in a certain place on the computer. So, moving that to Dropbox won't work as iPhoto does not see it there. So, what I did was to export only those photo images that I wanted to see and use in Legacy. I put them in Legacy's Pictures folder which now resides in my Dropbox. Again, these images are viewable from within Legacy from either computer I use. I am not sure if you can have Dropbox on an external drive and have it work for you. I guess you can try it with a small amount of files as a test. If it doesn't work as you want, then move Dropbox to the hard drive of your computer (likely to be C Drive)and that definitely WILL work. It all just depends on the size of your Dropbox (2 GB or more?) and the size of hard drive (available capacity) of both of your computers that will help determine what will work best for you. I hope this answered your question? Oh, BTW, the upload may take a long time, if you transfer a large amount of data into your Dropbox like I did. Mine was about 8GB and that took 24 hours!!! I don't know if that slow speed is the fault of Dropbox or my internet speed on my end, which does fluctuate, especially upload speed. I could still use the computer during that time and it eventually did get it all synced up between both computers. It just took a while for that initial sync. But, it is s worth it! Now, when I make a change, it's instantaneous like you would expect. I think this is a TOTALLY AWESOME way to sync whatever files you want to be able to use on both computers and keep synced. Re: [LegacyUG] DropBox, after using for a few days
Well mercy sakes Dropbox just hasn't worked 100% for me. The Dropbox program is installed on each computer (1 XP 1 VISTA 64bit), both using the same build of Legacy7 Dlx. From the XP 'puter, I copied my .fdb file to Dropbox. It was immediately copied to Dropbox server and appeared on my VISTA machine. Now, each time I open Legacy I get the dreaded Error 91 - Error opening data base Run-time error '91': Object variable or With block variable not set It then closes the Legacy program. This happens approximately ever other time I open Legacy. Then it will open almost normally. This behavior happens no whether I open Legacy by double clicking the file in the DropBox folder or if I try to start Legacy from the start program. This happens on both the XP and the VISTA machine and it doesn't make any difference whether the Legacy file was closed and then immediately opened on the same machine or the other machine. One other strange thing ~ if I set the Options Customize Starting File to Always Prompt for Starting Family File and then save that setting... the next time I start Legacy, the .fdb file in the LockBox folder is the one used and the setting under Options Customize will have been reset to Open Last Used Family File Automatically. Never had the dreaded Run-Time error 91 or any other problem before using LockBox and will probably need to return to toting my flash driver forth and back between the two machines. Re: [LegacyUG] DropBox, after using for a few days
Janis I have a lot of photos on my computer about 4,000..but that isn't what I'm storing on Dropbox that takes up so much room. In the past, I have taken (a considerable amount of time) to scan in every single genealogy document I have into my computer. Am I a nut, or what? LOL Those are organized and saved into my Surnames folder. I did high quality scans of each document so that I can print up a quality copy later, if I choose to. I like the idea of having both paper and digitized copies of documents. The digitized ones are backed up onto an external hard drive that lives in our fireproof safe. So,THAT comprises the largest part of my Dropbox. Jim I'm truly sorry that Dropbox hasn't worked for you. I'm not at all familiar (lucky me!) with that Run-time error 91 problem. Perhaps someone else with more knowledge of that can better help you? Dropbox WILL work, I know that. I'm not very knowledgeable about XP and Vista. I use XP on both my computers from within my Mac, using a virtualization program. Even that doesn't confuse Dropbox, LOL. I have Legacy set to open the last file I worked in. If it turns out, I don't want that one after all, I simply close the file and choose Open Family File to find the one I want. All my FDB files are stored in the same folder in Dropbox. Are you allowing enough time for the syncing/updating to complete before you try to open the file on your other computer? Be sure to wait until you see the green check mark that indicates the file has synced completely. On my setup, that is pretty instantaneous, but that would depend on the size of your file and, more importantly, the speed of your internet connection as that is how the data gets synced. I see someone has offered to attempt a conversion for you. Hopefully that will work. One problem was you didn't make clear in your original message whether you have the FTM 1.1 software available. If so you could simply install it, open the file, export a GEDCOM (note, not GENCOM) and use that to import into Legacy. [LegacyUG] travel vs emigration
Hello listers, I have several people who have left Belgium for the US in the early 1900s. For those that I know to have stayed/died in the US, I have used event Emigration (mostly for their first travel, if other info is missing). For those who have come back/died in Belgium, I've used event Travel. Howeevr, I realised that I haven't used this consistently, and maybe not even correctly. When is a person considered emigrated? When they first entered the country, or when they requested nationality, or when they received it? We can have people travelling a few times and then emigrated. We could also have people who have traveled after they emigrated... I'd be interested to know how other people record those situation? Re: [LegacyUG] DropBox, after using for a few days
Janis DimJim I'm sure you are absolutely right, Janis! Very astute of you. I totally zoned out on that and didn't take notice of it. Yes, DimJim, I think that might be the problem as Legacy needs all its files in order to work properly. When I first started using Dropbox, I selected all files within Legacy/ Data and copied them into a new folder at DropBox/Legacy Data and it has worked flawlessly for me. I chose to name that new folder differently, instead of just copying over the Data folder from within Legacy, so that I could EASILY tell if the location chosen for backups and data saves was indeed my new folder in Dropbox and not the default Data folder in Legacyjust to make it easier and more obvious to me so I could tell at a glance. So, DimJim, if you're not totally soured on Dropbox, you could try again. First, though, make sure your file is in good shape, healthy, and opening from its default location in Legacy. Then try doing either as I did or just copying over your Data folder to your Dropbox. Hopefully, you will get better results. I think the Immigration/Emigration events would be used when an individual changed his permanent residence from one country to another, regardless of whether he changed citizenship. [LegacyUG] Incorrect Relationships
There is an ongoing problem with Relationship that Legacy can't seem to fix. For instance, my 22nd GGFather and GGMother had two children, each of whom is an ancestor of mine - one is my 21st GGF, the other is incorrectly listed as my 19th GGAunt! Her husband is, accordingly, incorrectly listed as the Husband of my 19th GG Aunt. Their child is correctly listed as my 21st GGFather. However, Legacy can find no relationship between him and his parents!! And, of course, the ancestors of HIS father, my incorrectly listed Husband of my 19th GGAunt, are not identified as my ancestors. Unfortunately, This is not an isolated occurrence; it occurs with too many of my ancestors, some as close as my 6th GGParents! It doesn't matter what limits I set on Blood or Non-blood Relationships; the relationships are still wrong! Generations are crucial to genealogy, and being unable to find my direct ancestors has become a MAJOR problem with this otherwise wonderful program. I have reported the problem to Legacy for more than a year. It was going to be fixed in Legacy 7 but is actually worse. Replies from support have been dismissive. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and, hopefully, found a solution? [LegacyUG] Old Style/New Style dates for pre 1754 England, how to enter
Because I am only so far entering my maternal grandmother's lineage on Legacy, most of individuals are English.? Many pre-1752 when the first day of the year changed from Mar 25 to Jan 1.? The only way I have been able to enter the Jan 1-Mar 24 dates on Legacy for those earlier years are 1 Jan 1725-1 Jan 1726 which in my mind gives an entire idea than I am trying to convey, the idea that the date was?somewhere between those two dates.? What I had done on PAF was 1 Jan 1725/6 which it did accept.? Has anyone found a way to allow that type of dating?? I know the IGI uses the New style which would be 1 Jan 1726, but to me that is not clear as unless you know how?a particular?compiler is interpreting the original info,?that date could be 1725 or 1726.? I'd rather those with whom I share didn't have to guess.??? Decided to check Wikipedia and found this quote:?^ Mike Spathaky Old Style New Style dates and the change to the Gregorian calendar. We as historians have no excuse for creating ambiguity and must keep to the notation described above in one of its forms [either using OS/NS to apply to the leap year correction, the start of the year correction, or both]. It is no good writing simply 20th January 1745, for a reader is left wondering whether we have used the Old or the New Style reckoning. The date should either be written 20th January?1745 OS (if indeed it was Old Style) or as 20th January 1745/6. The hyphen (1745-6) is best avoided as it can be interpreted as indicating a period of time.? So I tried adding OS to?a date and it flipped it to the next year and dropped the OS.??The same thing happens if I put NS which is the reverse, still adds a year.? Any suggestions? I hope I am using plain text which I believe I always do, because the Rootsweb way of checking for AOL 9.0 doesn't work on 9.5.? Thanks, Charlotte? ? RE: [LegacyUG] Including source scanned images in web page creation
David, It is not possible to attach documents in the way you suggest. To attach documents using Legacy it is necessary to create, say, a Census Event and attach the picture to it. For each Event Legacy will select only the first picture for any Event, should this function be selected. Personally, I do not include documents, partly because being from England it is a breach of crown copyright to reproduce official documents without their permission. If I wish to include Event photos I hand code these as I can then determine precisely where *I* want the thumbnail to go. I am not familiar with TMG and am a little puzzled, as you say your site is produced by TMG but the meta data says it was generated by Second Site - was this done from a GEDCOM? If so the answer may be different. Re: [LegacyUG] DropBox, after using for a few days
Kathy, Janis and all, Thanks for all the thoughts, suggestions and concerns. Since my original note, I have deleted all the files in DropBox, then copied all the files from C/Legacy7/Data to DropBox - no joy - still erratic. Sometimes it will open and then again it takes several tries before Legacy will start. THEN I deleted all of those files from DropBox, opened Legacy (always works with no prob when DropBox is empty) and opened my main dbf file, then from Legacy I saved-as with a new file name directly to the Legacy folder within DropBox. Still the same erratic behavior ~ sometimes I get the Runtime Error 91 and it shuts down and then again it will open correctly. Same behavior, both machines. I'm going to uninstall DropBox and then restart both machines before I install LB again. Then I will save-as from Legacy with my main fdb file, to LB with a new file name. If that doesn't work. off to the saloon ;-) or ~ maybe I'll login to the users forum at DropBox On Fri, Feb 13, 2009 at 11:34 AM, Kathy Cardoza kmacard...@mac.com wrote: Janis DimJim I'm sure you are absolutely right, Janis! Very astute of you. I totally zoned out on that and didn't take notice of it. Yes, DimJim, I think that might be the problem as Legacy needs all its files in order to work properly. When I first started using Dropbox, I selected all files within Legacy/Data and copied them into a new folder at DropBox/Legacy Data and it has worked flawlessly for me. Thought I'd post this problem in the hope that it might shed additional light on what is going on with the Run-Time error 91 issue. RE: [LegacyUG] cleaning up gedcom import
Erin, Did you click Refresh from the option on the right of the Tree Finder Screen? This is necessary after any changes. There is no problem using Search and Replace to make the date changes you need. You may have to select the anywhere in the field option and make sure to chamge the full date ie. l990 to 1990, otherwise all the ls will be changed! If the dates are in different fields such as Event Date, Birth Date etc. then you will have to do it for each one. There is also an option to choose whether or not to change each selection before so doing; you may prefer to start by having this set and then switch to Select All when your confidence has built up. [LegacyUG] First and Second spouses reversed
Have recently jumped from v4 to v7 and am tweaking settings. Have discovered a great many marriages are reversed. The FIRST spouse is listed second and the SECOND spouse is listed first. Whether or not a spouse is the Preferred individual seems to have no effect on the switch. Dates are correct and in the right timeline. Can this be corrected globally or must I find EVERY set of switched spouses in this database and somehow manually switch them...which is another process I can't seem to find how to do. Assistance and guidance welcomed. Re: [LegacyUG] Naming documents and using File ID numbers
I used to, but found that I prefer making 'fake' labels (printing on the backside of a photocopy) of a 'address' label which gives my Source Name and some details (repository, pages, etc.) having transfered my photocopies to acidfree paper, so no 'sticky' lables wanted. I use both Source list Name and Title. This was a lot cleaner than hand written numbers which could get confused. Re: [LegacyUG] Digital Images of Census Pages
I don't consider myself a professional (never got paid), but I would say it is a personal choice, with factors being size of your equipment, the maintenance cost of same, and what you plan to do when finally finished. For many of my earlier entries and a few of my later entries, I have gone back to the census and scrolled to the appropriate page and found the data quickly. This tells me that my source details pass the test of findability. Now I am wondering if it is worth the effort to make a digital copy of each census record to include with each reference to the census document in Resident, Occupation, Emigration, and Religion Events. How would you professionals answer this query? Re: [LegacyUG] DropBox, after using for a few days
I found this problem, when on my old Windows 3.1 CPU, if I left it running overnight, and decided my mainframe got confused after too much 'calculating', meaning too many big reports without logging off/restarting so I got used to turning it off every night, and have continued with my laptop for no reason. I was told way back, that computers each have a finite number of times to turn on and off before they die. I am backed up, if I need to buy a new one (hope I am not infuriating any gremlins). I have never encountered error 91. I have delayed updating to .86 because I thought I noticed that err. 91 started then (I may be wrong). But since I was not having that problem decided to stay with tried and true. Also I have no media in my Legacy program yet. Thought I'd post this problem in the hope that it might shed additional light on what is going on with the Run-Time error 91 issue. I love knowing that each time I close my Legacy file on my laptop, it updates my file on my desktop – and the reverse. No copying to a thumb drive. No backing up (no pesky error 91). Not even the trouble of moving a file, via the home network, from one machine to the other. Just seamless, effortless synchronization. Ditto for media files.
