This has been answered by Bruce, but I thought I'd mention that there is
a good way to find things which don't seem to appear in the Help index.

Up at the top of the left-hand column of the Help index page there are 3
tabs - Index, Search and Favorites. Click on Search to bring that tab
forward and type a word in the search box then click List topics. You
might need to try one or two topics to get the right one, but the
information you want is usually in there somewhere.

For example, if you type Asterisk in the Search box, the very first
topic is Editing Children, which you might guess is the one you want in
this case. Click on that heading and click Display and you get a whole
page on Editing Children and the word Asterisk is highlighted wherever
it appears.

Judy

That is not how the Family Search Pilot site works. If you go to the
home page at
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start you
will see that the search string I gave you is the only one available for
that site. I have found it to be very useful with new info being added
constantly. It is the search they offer at this site for now so we have
no other coice at the moment.

Also, they have changed the interface and the new search string is;
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#searchId=9852562670625281;p=recordResults;givenName=[GivenNames];searchType=standard;surname=[LastName]

As you can see it is longer but works in the same manner as the old one.

[LegacyUG] Losing tags AGAIN!

2009-02-19 Thread Michele Lewis
Okay, it is happening again. I will tag a group of people and then my tags
get untagged and I am not doing it!

Here is what I am doing...

I tagged everyone in my file that is buried at the Grantham Family Cemetery
in Lamar Co, MS. I wanted to go through my file and verify the data against
the Lamar County Cemetery Book (I have been to the cemetery in person but I
wanted to see if there were any discrepanies). I tagged everyone on #1. I
then ran a search to see how many were tagged. I had 205 people tagged.

So, I start going through the tagged individuals one by one. I had made it
about 3/4 of the way through. I was click the right arrow on the bottom of
the screen to go to the next individual. I had done it over and over again
going through these people with no problem. I just now tried to click to
the next person and it says there is nobody tagged (just 2 people ago I was
still showing 82 people tagged. I was periodically checking to see how I
was progressing). So, I run a search again to see who all is still tagged
and there aren't any. Two people ago there were 82.

I promise promise promise I have not clicked on the advanced tagging option
and wiped out my tags (I know you are going to ask me this). It would be
IMPOSSIBLE for me to accidently wipe out my tags! It takes deliberate steps
to clear them and I am very well versed in tagging and untagging.

This has happened to me SEVERAL times and I have mentioned it on the list
before. It is very annoying.

I can't just go back and tag everyone in the Grantham Cemtery again because
there would be no way for me to know which ones I have already checked and
which ones I haven't.

Also, they have changed the interface and the new search string is;

As you can see it is longer but works in the same manner as the old one.

I used to be a die hard lumper. I only had one source for the 1900 census
(for example). However, with the new Sourcewriter I have been forced to
become a splitter :) :) :) Here is what my source list looks like...

Census - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1880
Census - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1900
Census - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1910
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1850
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1860
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1860 (slave)
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1870
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1880
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1880 (mortality)
Census - Federal - MS - Marion Co - 1840
Census - Federal - MS - Marion Co - 1850
Census - Federal - MS - Marion Co - 1860
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1850
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1850 (slave)
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1860
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1870
Census - Federal - NC - Robeson Co - 1790
Census - Federal - NC - Robeson Co - 1800
Census - Federal - NC - Robeson Co - 1810

This of course is just a small snippet. I have them organized this way so
that I can find my master source quickly.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Digital Images of Census Pages

I will tell you another advantage, as I am transcribing the census I
really

pick up on things like when something isn't right (an age, a relationship
etc)

Here is an example of what it looks like (this is an 1860)...

Soloman Garaway, age 32, male, farmer, value of real estate $600, born
in

GA
Elizabeth Garaway, age 33, female, born in MS, unable to read or write
Sarah Garaway, age 11, female, born in MS
Benjamin Garaway, age 8, male, born in MS
Clarissa Garaway, age 6, female, born in MS
Mary Garaway, age 4, female, born in MS
Matilda Garaway, age 2, female, born in MS
Leucretia Garaway, age 5/12, female, born in MS

Or a later census (1930)...
Henry Bounds, head, owns home, lives on a farm, male, white, age 42,
married, married at age 19, able to read and write, born in MS, both
parents born in MS, speaks English, farmer, farm, #31 on farm schedule
Adia Bounds, wife, female, white, age 41, married, married at age 18,
able

to read and write, born in MS, both parents born in MS, speaks English
Virgil Bounds, son, male, white, age 20, single, able to read and write,
born in MS, both parents born in MS, speaks, English, log sawyer,
logging

[2nd word unreadable]
Cull Bounds, son, male, white, age 15, single, able to read and write,
born in MS, both parents born in MS, speaks English, laborer, farm
Ernest Bounds, son, male, white, age 12, single, attended school this
year, able to read and write, born in MS, both parents born in MS,
speaks

English
Corzella Bounds, daughter, female, white, age 10, single, attended
school

this year, able to read and write, born in MS, both parents born in MS,
speaks English
Harvey Bounds, son, male, white, age 7, single, born in MS, both parents
born in MS, speaks English
Elias Bounds, son, male, white, age 4, single, born in MS, both parents
born in MS, speaks English

I copy the event and add it to each person listed. When you run a
report

it will show the census for every year in order and it makes for a nice
progression of what happened in their life. They start out living with
their parents, they get married and have a family of their own, and then
sometimes they move in with their kids in their later life. You don't
see

it as well if you have just attached a copy (link) of the census.

It does take more time but I think it is worth the effort. Another
thing,
as I am going back through looking at stuff, it is a lot esier looking
at
transcriptions than it is to have to look at the original image again
and

have to re-analyze it. Or course if there is ever a question I can pull
the census page up easily.

Re: [LegacyUG] removing a name from legacy

2009-02-19 Thread Frank Saragosa
Thanks for your reply. Here's what I do:
I open Legacy from my desktop. I went through the steps to remove a name. I
clicked on the internet button on the taskbar. On the menu, I click
create web page. and I get the web page creation window. On that
window, I get the message This project already contains web pages. Would
you like to delete all files from c:\program files\legacy\web\family
history\? I click on yes. I then get the message generating web pages
for individuals. followed by web page creation is complete. I am then
asked, Would you like to see web pages in your browser? I click yes.
When I view the pages on the browser, there is no instance of the name I
removed.

I close out Legacy and go to my web page. There, I click on the Legacy
link. The name I removed is gone from the list of names. However, to my
dismay, the name appears when I go to the person's father. His brother,
whom I did not delete, and he, whom I did delete, appear in the father's
family links box. When I click on the deleted name, I get his page with
his information.

When I open Legacy from my desktop and check, again, there is no instance of
the deleted name. It's frustrating, especially because I cannot go back and
redo the removal process -- the name does not appear in Legacy. Except, of
course, when accessed from the website.

In addition, I have manually uploaded (FTP) the legacy index file and the
above noted family history file. All to no avail.

I reinstalled Legacy Deluxe 5.0, but that didn't help either.

I hope you or another can help me solve this problem. I have no idea why
the person wants his name removed (it shows only his parents, brother, and
birth year), but he does; and I want to honor his request.

Thanks

fs

I have tried to remove a person's name from my family tree information.
After I go through all the steps, the name in the legacy program has been
removed from all instances. Then I create a web page. Then, when I use
the browser button in the task bar, the browser display shows no
 instance
of the name I deleted. However, when I open my website, in which I have a
link to Legacy, the Legacy program does not show the name EXCEPT when I
 go
to the person's father's name, the name of the deleted person appears as a
son. The person whose name appears has asked me to remove it from Legacy
 and
my website. I don't know why, but there it is.
I reinstalled Legacy Deluxe 5.0 (which I use), but the problem persists.

Does anyone know what might be the answer to this problem? I'd appreciate
 any help I can get.

I used to be a die hard lumper. I only had one source for the 1900 census
(for example). However, with the new Sourcewriter I have been forced to
become a splitter :) :) :) Here is what my source list looks like...

Census - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1880
Census - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1900
Census - Federal - GA - Columbia Co - 1910
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1850
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1860
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1860 (slave)
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1870
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1880
Census - Federal - GA - Lincoln Co - 1880 (mortality)
Census - Federal - MS - Marion Co - 1840
Census - Federal - MS - Marion Co - 1850
Census - Federal - MS - Marion Co - 1860
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1850
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1850 (slave)
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1860
Census - Federal - MS - Perry Co - 1870
Census - Federal - NC - Robeson Co - 1790
Census - Federal - NC - Robeson Co - 1800
Census - Federal - NC - Robeson Co - 1810

This of course is just a small snippet. I have them organized this way
so

that I can find my master source quickly.

Michele --- I have a question for you. I know this has been addressed
on

this list before -- so sorry for asking again.

But I too transcribe census records as you do. How do you list them in
your
master source list? Do you list each census seperately or put all the
1900
Census records under a 1900 census listing?

Thanks for your input!

I will tell you another advantage, as I am transcribing the census I
really
pick up on things like when something isn't right (an age, a
relationship

Virgil Bounds, son, male, white, age 20, single, able to read and
write,

born in MS, both parents born in MS, speaks, English, log sawyer,
Harvey Bounds, son, male, white, age 7, single, born in MS, both
parents

born in MS, speaks English
Elias Bounds, son, male, white, age 4, single, born in MS, both parents
born in MS, speaks English

I copy the event and add it to each person listed. When you run a
report
it will show the census for every year in order and it makes for a nice
progression of what happened in their life. They start out living with
their parents, they get married and have a family of their own, and
then

sometimes they move in with their kids in their later life. You don't
see
it as well if you have just attached a copy (link) of the census.

It does take more time but I think it is worth the effort. Another
thing,
as I am going back

Thanks for your reply. Here's what I do:

I open Legacy from my desktop. I went through the steps to remove a name. I
clicked on the internet button on the taskbar. On the menu, I click create
web page. and I get the web page creation window. On that window, I get
the message This project already contains web pages. Would you like to
 delete all files from c:\program files\legacy\web\family history\? I click
on yes. I then get the message generating web pages for individuals.
followed by web page creation is complete. I am then asked, Would you like
to see web pages in your browser? I click yes. When I view the pages on
the browser, there is no instance of the name I removed.

I close out Legacy and go to my web page. There, I click on the Legacy link.
The name I removed is gone from the list of names. However, to my dismay,
the name appears when I go to the person's father. His brother, whom I did
not delete, and he, whom I did delete, appear in the father's family links
box. When I click on the deleted name, I get his page with his information.

I have no idea why the
person wants his name removed (it shows only his parents, brother, and birth
year), but he does; and I want to honor his request.

 Thanks

Subject: [LegacyUG] removing a name from legacy

I have tried to remove a person's name from my family tree information.

After I go through all the steps, the name in the legacy program has been

removed from all instances. Then I create a web page. Then, when I use

the browser button in the task bar, the browser display shows no instance

of the name I deleted. However, when I open my website, in which I have a

link to Legacy, the Legacy program does not show the name EXCEPT when I go

to the person's father's name, the name of the deleted person appears as a

son. The person whose name appears has asked me to remove it from Legacy and

my website. I don't know why, but there it is.

I reinstalled Legacy Deluxe 5.0 (which I use), but the problem persists.

Does anyone know what might be the answer to this problem? I'd appreciate

 any help I can get.

Subject: [LegacyUG] removing a name from legacy

I have tried to remove a person's name from my family tree information.

After I go through all the steps, the name in the legacy program has been

the browser button in the task bar, the browser display shows no instance

So what you do is change the drive letter on your Pen drive to say R
which should be a letter that would not normally be used when plugging
in

your Pen drive. That way when you plug it into different computers the
drive letter will stay the same. QED.{;-)

That should work, but only if she sets the drive letter to R on _EVERY_

[LegacyUG] SourceWriter Template Problem

2009-02-19 Thread Kirsten Bowman
I'm having a problem with a master source created using the SourceWriter
template Book book, authored author known online book. When brought
onto the Source Clipboard, everything typed into either of the Text Comments
boxes appears in italics. The text doesn't show as italicized when typed,
only after it's added to a field as a source for a given fact (name, dob,
etc.) I've tried highlighting the text and clicking the italics button and
also typing the text into Notepad then copying/pasting into the detail boxes
but nothing will clear the italics.

I'm using Legacy 7.0.0.76. Does anyone else see the same result with this
version or with the later update?

I am out of ideas for solving the problem, but in general it is not a good
idea to post *any* living people to the web. Your person is probably
concerned about identity theft, since many people use things such as their
mother's maiden name for security questions. Puting that info onto public
sites makes it easy for bad people to harvest.

When I have people I don't know . . . I started using words that start with
Z and that alerts me to them being unknown or in your case, hidden.
Zeke, Zelma, ZORBA, etc. and a suggestion might be to use abt. for a birth
date,
so it won't mess up your generations. Tell your kids what you are doing, so
when you and he are gone, they can put it back right. Hope this helps you a
little. Good luck. I've never thought of Identity Theft before, but maybe
we're going to have to start being more careful ourselves about the LIVING
persons. Glad I don't have your problem though. My sympathy.
