RE: [LegacyUG] General Notes VS. Events

2009-04-01 Thread ronald ferguson

True, but then I don't source them. My Research Notes comprise comments from
Events/Sources such as the example which I gave ie. Census 1861, marriages -
perhaps a witness is a relative, deaths - maybe the name and relationship of
the person who reported it. All of these are already sourced elsewhere, so I
don't duplicate.

I would love to use the General and Research notes more often, but
it's so difficult to source them. I put things in Events more than I

can turn them off when I'm sending it to someone else.

RE: [LegacyUG] Run time error '5'

2009-04-01 Thread ronald ferguson

When Legacy is installed the install log is created. It is also clear that some
users find that they no longer have the log file in their system. The one thing
which they all have in common is that they have correctly tried to uninstall
Legacy using the Window's Add/Remove function and have not been successful.
Why, I cannnot tell, but isn't it possible that the install log file is being
stripped at this point?

Nope, no Norton programs on my system.

Here is the sequence of what occurred:

I downloaded 7.0.0.90. (Either shortly before or shortly after installing
7.0.0.90, I also installed Adobe Reader 9). Legacy seemed to work properly
for several days, but I had not tried to print. When I tried to preview/print
a report, Legacy froze and could only be shut down with Ctrl-Alt-Del and
End Process. (No error message appeared).

After trying several other things (deleting .usr files, etc.), I tried to
uninstall Legacy. It appeared to uninstall, but I later discovered Legacy was
still on my computer and operational (except for my print/preview problem).

It was at this point that I discovered the install.log file was no longer on
my system and I could not uninstall Legacy.

The only way I could remove Legacy from my system was to delete it from the
 Registry.

I then reinstalled, and it was at this point I got Error 339 when trying to
print/preview. I fixed that by following the Legacy online instructions for
downloading the affected .ocx files (vsprint8.ocx and vspdf8.ocx if I'm
 remembering correctly).

 Hope this helps,

 Connie

 Sherry,

I'm not sure if you're talking about the
 current
 .90 build, or another build
you have in the pipeline, but I wanted to clarify (in
 case
 it is important
for the programmers) that the problem I had with the
 missing install.log

 only
 after I installed
.90. (7.0.0.90 did cure my run time error 5 problem,
 but
 it - or perhaps my
similarly timed installation of Adobe Reader 9 -
 caused my Legacy
 print/preview and missing install.log problem). I was
 not
 still using .89

It often happens that I cite a Source which relates only to Date OR
Place, Firstname OR Surname but not to both, or it relates to only one
of several Notes. In those cases I add a line in the Source Detail
Comments such as relates to date of birth or relates to name of
second wife or whatever is appropriate. You can choose whether or not
you want to include these Comments with the Citations in Reports.

From the Help files: The U column to the left of the file names
indicates whether or not each picture has been attached to someone in
your family file already. The + means that picture in that folder has
been attached to someone. The - means that file name has been attached
to someone but from a different picture folder. For example, you may be
looking at grandpa.bmp in the Legacy\Pictures folder but another file

different picture files with the same name located in different folders.
It will surely confuse you at some point…

Maybe the following may explain what I am trying to say.

I'm not quite sure why you say the picture ... has no caption and
then you say the attached copy Have you got several copies
of the same picture? If so, see the last sentence below.

On the right hand top of the picture centre there is a tab marked Picture List
and a tab marked Attached Pics.
I entered captions etc in the Picture List and attach the picture to a person in
the Name list I then click on the Attached Pics list and the caption etc is in
place.
When I open the Picture centre the next day and look in the Picture List no
pictures have captions etc.
According to Help the captions should be there.

Caption, Date, Description, File ID #
You can enter caption, date and description information before assigning a
picture to an individual. There is also a field for a File ID # if you are
assigning these numbers to your pictures. These entries are remembered by
Legacy for future use even if the picture has not been assigned to anyone yet.

All the pictures are in one folder and are the only ones used for Legacy

[LegacyUG] Print list of individuals by Surname

Hi,

I'm doing a lot of searching through census, military, immigration records
etc and continually have to refer to the Legacy Index to see if it's the
right person... rather slow and tedious by going backwards and forwards. I

Is there a report or some way of extracting a list of individuals say G-K

Mother (not just surname groups).

I have searched through the many Legacy reports, Dennis's Ltools and cant
find it, or do I have to use MS Access.

The initial problem is creating the list. Fortunately Legacy enables this in
SearchDetailed Search, select as follows

Look for whom: Individual
Where to look: Surname
How to look: Starts with
What to look for: G

Repeat for the following two lines using H and I with OR as the option -
you can only select 3 at a time.

Create the list and on the new screen click Print. Customise as you wish.

[LegacyUG] Error 508

2009-04-01 Thread John Roose
First, thank you Sherry ( other Milennia folk), Bob, Colin, David, Dennis
and others on and off LUG! The help - and speed of inputand knowledge of
this group has no equal!

I was able to save and backup all my input. That said, the basic Error 508
problem has not been solved. It began with my upgrade from Norton 360 to
Norton Premier 360. An [UNacceptable] work around is to disable Norton
before backing up; then restoring it.

A computer literate friend suggests that the upgrade may have left pieces in
the registry that is causing a conflict. I'll be working with the friend and
Norton as the days go by.

Thanx for all the help.

Regards, John

If you uninstall through the Control Panel, all versions you have installed

Re: [LegacyUG] General Notes VS. Events

2009-04-01 Thread Bruce Jones
I have also wondered about putting information into Events/Facts Notes
vs General Notes (or, as Jenny mentioned, in Source Detail comments).
As others have said various times, it depends on the purpose or goal.
Who is the target? You? Others?

Legacy is so flexible! One option is to put the information in more
than one place. For some occasions you would include the General
Notes for readability. For other occasions you might exclude the
General Notes but include the Events/Facts with the sources. You can
choose if you want the Detail Source Comments to print or not.

Regarding sourcing General Notes. There was a suggestion earlier this
year as to how to include multiple sources in General Notes. I don't
remember what the subject was. I think the general idea was to put
the author's name (Smith) after each different piece information so
the source of that particular information could be easily found in the
source list.

If you choose to stay with Events/Facts, some have suggested a very
simple sentence structure, with very little other than [Notes]. Then
you can enter the information in the Event Notes exactly the way you

I hardly ever even look at the Picture Centre, and attach my picutres,
caption them, etc, from the Individual's screen or from the Multimedia
tab on the Source Details screen, however I've been having a poke around
and it just goes to confirm what I've always thought - that the Picture
Centre is very confusing and difficult to negotiate!

It seems to me that to see the Caption etc, you need to select the
Individual in the Name pane, select the person or Event in the Attached
Pictures pane at the bottom and make sure you have the Attached Pics tab
selected. If you have a picture selected in the Picture Filename pane
it will show on the Picture List tab, but its Caption, etc will NOT
show.

There does seem to be something odd with the U column. Nearly all my
pictures are showing a -, which should mean that the attached version of
the picture is in a different folder to the one which I am viewing.
However, I am viewing C:\Legacy\Pictures and all my attached pictures
(other than those attached to Sources) are in that folder and attached
from there. I tried removing one from an Individual and re-attaching it
and then it did show as a +.

Yes, Ron, that is exactly what happened in my case.

The install.log file was the ONLY Legacy file that the uninstall routine
removed (or perhaps more correctly, the only obvious file that it removed;
there may have been others I am unaware of, but none that affected the basic
operation of the program).

It didn't matter whether I tried to uninstall from Windows Add/Remove, or from
the Legacy uninstall utility, install.log was removed. I know this because I
retrieved the install.log file from Mozy and put it back in the Legacy folder
after my first uninstall attempt from Add/Remove failed.

I then tried again directly from the Legacy uninstall utility. Same result.
The install.log file disappeared and I had to uninstall Legacy via registry
edit.

You can use multiple sources in a single note by using the old MLA
sourcing technique of putting a reference to the source in brackets
at the end of the paragraph or sentence.

For example, if the source is Early Fairchilds in America by Jean
Fairchild Gilmore, at the end of the section, I'd enter [Gilmore] and
then source my book in the Notes the usual way.

Then
you can enter the information in the Event Notes exactly the way you
want it to read.

Just my thoughts.

What is the general concensus regarding where to put general

A lot of the items I put into events has written data to

to the event statement to read it. Should entries such as
a census comment be placed in General Notes or as an event?
If in the event field, the entry under the individual is
pretty stark '...He was in the1870 Census...' or
some similar feature. Likewise, if the obituary is entered
as an event, the entry under the individual states
 '...He was buried...'.

I would appreciate some input from others as to which place
is most commonly uses to put general data like, birth,
 death, marriages, obituaries,etc.

There have been a few discussions about this subject in the last year. You
might want to read the following thread in the archives for more ideas:

www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/msg31810.html

Initially, I put most info beyond basic birth, marriage, death, burial events
in Notes because, like you, I found the Event sentence issue too rigid and
cumbersome. But as someone else has mentioned, it is difficult to source
General Notes if you are using more than one source.

You can have individually sourced, free flowing Notes if you use Events and
change the sentence structure to [Notes] [Sources].

At this point, I'm using a hybrid of the two: if the individual is a direct
ancestor or otherwise someone on whom I'm doing extensive research, I primarily
use Events and change the sentence structure, usually to [Notes] [Sources]. I
use Research Notes to jot down ideas regarding possible relationships, where I
might want to look next, or thoughts about what conflicting evidence might
mean.

If I'm entering data on say, a 2nd cousin, twice removed (someone I don't plan
to research in depth) and I have info beyond basic event data that I want to
record, I use General Notes, not Events, with an brief embedded usually short
reference to the source. Not totally kosher as far as source citation, but I
cannot afford the time to do otherwise at this point.

Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Address

2009-04-01 Thread CE WOOD
For much used cemeteries (my family-wise) I do like using the Burial Address
because then I can pinpoint it with coordinates and photos. But you can do that
by entering the cemetery in the Burial Place Field too.

Entering the cemetery in the Burial Place Field doesn't mess with the Master
Location List for me when I enter the name first, such as Rumford
CemeteryWhen the cemetery is otherwise named, and I want to know if I have
already entered that cemetery, I use the Sort of City, County, State, Country,
and just change the Direction of Sort from Left to Right to Right to Left.

The nice thing about Legacy is that you can do so many things in many different
ways, that most users are content most of the time.

Hi Dave -

I enter the cemetery information in the burial address. Not sure how/what
you are trying to search for but

I enter the cemetery name as
Cemetery KY:Crown Hill Cemetery

If I click on address list (button on the right side) then I get a list of
all of the cemeteries sorted by state and then name. (I also have churches
for marriages and hospitals for births etc)

I can then click on show list which lists all of the people using that
address. I use the burial address notes for anything I want to remember

I want to keep but won't print in reports.

RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Address

2009-04-01 Thread leo macdonald

Hi Dave,
I have wrestled with this problem myself, I found that in local newspapers and
in books on communities or in books on family lines that sometimes a particular
cemetery can be called by two, three or more different versions of the same
cemetery name. As an example:
West Devon Cemetery; United Church Cemetery, West Devon; Presbyterian Church
Cemetery, West Devon; etc. All refer to the same cemetery, and I had all three
or more listed in my location list.
Some times I would run across someone who had died and was buried in West Devon
but I couldn't remember what the name of the cemetery was and I would spend a
lot of time trying to locate the name in my location list.
As well if I wanted to print out a report listing everyone who was buried in
this cemetery, I'd have to look up all the different variations and tag each of
them.
The approach that I took to correct this and that places all cemeteries in the
same place in the location list is to include the full name of the cemetery and
put all cemeteries in the same format, this works great for me, it may not work
for anyone else.
I place my example above as follows:

Cemetery: United Presbyterian Church, West Devon,,.,..., Canada.

By using this format, all my cemeteries can now be located by typing in Cem,
they are sorted alphabetically by the first letter in the word following the
:.
You can still do searches from left to right or right to left.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 508

2009-04-01 Thread Ricardo Veloso
John,

Looking for this error at internet I found the link
http://www.2brightsparks.com/help/index.php?action=kbarticle=57.

It says:

There are two possible reasons for this error:

   - The target is a FAT/FAT32 partition and the Zip file is over 4GB in
size. The maximum filesize on a FAT/FAT32 partition is
4GB.http://www.2brightsparks.com/help/index.php?action=kbarticle=56
   - The existing Zip file on the target cannot be replaced because you do
not have the filesystem permissions to delete/overwrite it.

Could one of this two causes be your problem?

Ricardo Veloso

 What’s the full error message?

Backup Error: 508, Cannot move temporary file to target zip file.

Which build of Legacy are you on?

 Installed Version: 7.0.0.90

Which version of Windows do you have?

Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3

 Where is your backup destination?

 E:/Jack's 2009-03-30 1.19.07 PM zip

Are you backing up Multimedia Files also?

 No

At what point of the backup does the error appear?

It runs to the end, then just before closing the error pops up. I have been
doing the same thing for some time with no problem. I just backed up my
netbook Legacy with no problem; same build. I have successfully backed up
other stuff (pdf files) to the memory stick that I have earlier Legacy
 backups on with no problem.

 Thanks for using Legacy.

 Thanx for your help.

When trying to backup today I can not - and get Error 508. It is not in
 the
 Legacy tech Error list.

 I backed up the way I have for years. So, I then did all file maintenance;
same Error 508. I then tried to backup another (non-Legacy) file and had
 no
 problem.

 Any thoughts or suggestions?

RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Address

2009-04-01 Thread Dave Johnson
Thank you all for your input. I will select an option from the ones that
have been submitted.

Can anyone tell me how to tag the records that have any entry Burial
Address field? I've tried all the search commands and have been unable to
find the records where I did put the Cemetery Name in the Burial Address
field.

Thanks.

Dave

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Address

Hi Dave,
I have wrestled with this problem myself, I found that in local newspapers
and in books on communities or in books on family lines that sometimes a
particular cemetery can be called by two, three or more different versions
of the same cemetery name. As an example:
West Devon Cemetery; United Church Cemetery, West Devon; Presbyterian Church
Cemetery, West Devon; etc. All refer to the same cemetery, and I had all
three or more listed in my location list.
Some times I would run across someone who had died and was buried in West
Devon but I couldn't remember what the name of the cemetery was and I would
spend a lot of time trying to locate the name in my location list.
As well if I wanted to print out a report listing everyone who was buried in
this cemetery, I'd have to look up all the different variations and tag each
of them.
The approach that I took to correct this and that places all cemeteries in
the same place in the location list is to include the full name of the
cemetery and put all cemeteries in the same format, this works great for me,
it may not work for anyone else.

Perhaps this has been discussed before, but alas . . . .

I'm frustrated trying to determine where to document cemetery information.
I've begun putting the Cemetery information in the Burial Address field.
However, I cannot find a way to search using the Burial Address field. If
I
put the Cemetery in the Burial Place field, that screws up the Master
Location List. I'd like to be advised by those long time users of Legacy
how they think the best way is to document the Cemetery where someone is
 buried.

 I am using Legacy 7.0.0.90.

 Thanks,

 Dave
