[LegacyUG] Re: Unable to copy scanned documents into Legacy "events" or "Notes"

2009-05-09 Thread Bill Rhodes
Many thanks to all who responded to my second request. Lots of great
suggestions! For the time being I think I will stick with FreeOCR
recommended by GeneY which seems to work fine for my use. One question,
Gene - is a tutorial available somewhere for FreeOCR? I'm figuring out a few
things by trial and error but a users manual or tutorial would probably make
it easier.

Thanks again for everyone's help - this is a great group!

Cathy,

I don't have a list, but in the example you gave, I'd call it what it is, "Ear
Marks". I call an event whatever seems to be logical.

I detest canned sentences, so for every event, the only sentence structure I
use is [Notes][Sources]. That way, I have complete control over how reports
read: usually that means my reports are less stilted, more free-flowing, and
hopefully a bit more interesting to read.

[LegacyUG] Any unusual Events with their sentence structures?

2009-05-09 Thread Cathy

Dear Legacy group,

Does anyone have a listing of "out of the ordinary events" along with
applicable sentence structures?

For example, I found a reference to the registered "ear marks" used
to brand an ancestor's cattle but am unsure how to add it to my
database. With city directories, I can add them as "Residence."

But what about any unusual events you've found? What are they and
how did you enter them into the Events with a sentence structure?

Thanks,
Cathy

A Legacy install places some components in C:\Windows... and also
updates the registry. So you should do the latter.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center Descendant Book Report

2009-05-09 Thread Alastair Lack
I've decided that the downsides of using the book are greater than the upsides.
You've highlighted one. However, I also want to put in fan charts -
otherwise multiple lines of descent are difficult to understand. And I
want to put in one or two word.doc files.
So I've got round all the problems by running each report separately,
composing pdfs. I also composed my introduction, copyright,
acknowledgements etc. separately, and put all together using a pdf
creator that can accept Legacy's pdfs. At that point I insert the page
numbers and correct the contents.

That way I have complete control over the output.

Re: [LegacyUG] Transfer Legacy files to reformatted computer?

2009-05-09 Thread ewinpa

Hello,

Thanks to all who replied to my request for help. I ended up just getting a
newer computer instead of reformatting my old oneit was old!!

I will soon be putting Legacy on this new computer and will try to follow the
instructions you all have given me.but I'm wondering if I can just drag my
entire old Legacy folder to my new hard drive (C:) since my old hard drive was
installed on this newer computer as drive E:. Or do I still need to install
Legacy on C: and move all my old files as I would have if I had reformatted my
old computer?

Another question I have is...how would I install Legacy (or any other program
for that matter) in such a way that it will open when I want to use it but it
is not starting up every time I start up my computer?

Thank you!
Elizabeth

Sorry for replying to someone other than the OP, but I didn't receive
his post (not plain text).

Some OCR software can be trialed for 30 days before buying. ABBYY
FineReader Express can't, but the Professional version can. They
probably use the same scanning engine so basic results should be
similar. And if the Professional version doesn't meet the OP's
requirements then the Express version won't either.

Bill,

I've been following this thread with interest. I must say I agree
with Janis. Transcribing the documents, even just the essential
parts, has helped me more than once to put some pieces of the puzzle
together that I might not have seen if I were simply scanning and
saving.

Just my FWIW. (for what it's worth)
