RE: [LegacyUG] Index Columns

2009-08-24 Thread Mark Lang
Hello Mary Jo,

Yes you can but it has to be set so that you can revert first.

In the Index View, click on the [Options] button and select Customise
Columns
In the Customise Index View Columns dialog, click [Save]
In the Save Layout column dialog, click an empty space, and in the name text
box, type Default, then click [Save]
Then in Customise Index View Columns dialog, change the field names you
don't want by clicking the [...] at the end of each field name
In the Field Names to display dialog, highlight a field name you want then
click [Select]. If you want to blank out field names, select the first entry
"blank - display nothing"
When you have the field names to the way you want
On the Customise Index View Columns dialog, click [Save]
In the Save Layout column dialog, click an empty space, and in the name text
box, type Parents, then click [Save]
In the Customise Index View Columns dialog, click [Close]

The columns will now change to what you want.
To revert back to what you had before
In the Index View, click on the [Options] button and select Customise
Columns
In the Customise Index View Columns dialog, click [Load]
In Load Column Layout dialog, select Default than click [Load]
In the Customise Index View Columns dialog, click [Close]

The columns will now revert back to your default settings.

Kind Regards,
Mark

You have already confirmed that the new PC has Open Office and
Adobe

not been set for
the file types you are trying to open in Control Panel -->
Default Programs
--> Set Associations. A quick way to test this is to navigate
to one of the
files in Windows Explorer and double click on it.

Hi Kirstin

I have absolutely no problems with attaching or opening
Pictures. But I
still cannot open PDF, RTF or ODT Document files by clicking
on their
respective icons after having added them by the "File" button
in the Picture
Gallery.

I can open TXT files and DOC files.

Also, I've discovered I cannot create PDF file of Reports but
I can create
TXT reports.

I sure hope someone gets an idea about this mystery.

Tom, I agree that the thumbnail shows up in the Picture

back to the Picture Gallery where I entered it in the
first place.

With regard to the second part, I clicked Delete & Open
list for a path where I know I have documents that I
attached to people. I found both myself (which also has
pictures attached) & my husband (who has no pictures
attached). So I am not able to duplicate your second
problem. But I only just attached those 2 documents (and
they were the same document) to test your problem, so
maybe someone who has more documents attached could test
your problem.

Hi Kirstin

Not exactly. The Picture Gallery shows Thumbnails of
photos & symbols of Documents, as you'd know.
Pictures (JPG files) attach via the "Picture" button
& open ok. After adding PDF files or ODT Open Office
files or RTF WordPad files to the Picture Gallery by
using the "File" button they will not open when I
double click on the Thumbnail. After adding TXT files
or Open Office files with a DOC extension by clicking
on the "File" button they open perfectly.

A further bit of information I've found is that going
Options -> Customise -> Locations -> View Current list
of Multimedia Locations
-> then selecting any path -> Options -> Delete ->
View List, I find
the names of people with _only_ PDF, RTF, or Open
Office DOC files are not there on the Path list.

(In addition the Path list names is not accurate at
all, some people being on the wrong path or being on a
path when they have no attached pictures or documents.)

I hope that makes sense, Kirstin.

2009-08-24 Thread Paul Gray

Tom,

I read your reply and others, and it seems like programs and file
associations are OK as long as you can open in Windows Explorer.

It's a bit of a stab in the dark, but you mentioned in a very early post
some "strangeness" with the multimedia paths. Perhaps for some reason the
paths to certain docs are no longer valid.

Has anything changed in your file (directory) structure since you originally
attached the documents that might make the path stored when you originally
attached the documents now invalid? If you take a previously unattached PDF
and attach it right now using the file icon, can you open it?

Tom,

No you can't ( but I am not going to check them all). Since the d.o.b. helps to
clarify the generations I don't understand why anyone would want to either.

I guess Privacy Brackets may work - see Help Files.

Ron - I realize this doesn't relate to genealogybut - That sounds like a
great benefit. We have so much confusion here in the USA on the bill being
proposed, that it is impossible to separate the propaganda from the truth. I
was hoping some of our news folks would write a series of articles outling the
programs in other countries - but they don't seem to have the desire. BTW - I'm
76, so its good to hear that you are able to acquire treatment at our age. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Hiding Birth Year on Reports

2009-08-24 Thread Leon Chapman
Anything enclosed in: [[ ]] brackets will not print unless you specify
that private information is to be printed. The square brackets work in any
field and in notes for sentence(s) or word(s). You have control to either
print private information or not in your reports. If you chose to print
private information, then you will get the information printed.

Your issue is still a problem -- the private information is a global switch,
so it would not work for a single individual's birth/death information
assuming your printing multiple people in reports.

Just to clarify...is it just a few specific people that you would
like to block dates of birth from appearing ...or wanting to block
the dates of birth of the living...? If the latter, using the privacy

would work if there were a few select individuals for which you

[LegacyUG] Event notes printing on same line as event name on book report - need to correct

2009-08-24 Thread Kathleen Townsley
First of all - I apologize if this is a repeat. I did a search but couldn't
find it. When I'm printing a book the event notes start on the same line as
the event name

example

1900 United States Federal Census: Name:Harry Smith
 Home in 1900:Speaker, Sanilac, Michigan
 Age:7
 Birth Date:Jun 1892

I want the name (which is the first line in the notes) to be below the event
name. How can I correct this?

thanks for any help

Presumably you have an Event Sentence which reads something like
[EventName] [Notes] [Sources].

You need to insert a [CR] after [EventName] which will insert a
"Carriage Return" causing the Notes to print on the next line. If you
want an empty line between, insert [CR][CR].

You did perfectly well, Amy. And that proves it should be possible for
me too as I have the same combination of Legacy & computer as you. And
you learned another feature of Legacy! :>)

Hi Amy

As by now you already know, Legacy does store only the path names &

By the way, as you're using Vista & Legacy 7.0.0.103, have you ever
attached any PDF documents via the "Picture Gallery" by clicking on
the "File" button? If so, can you open them by clicking on the
Icon? I'd be interested to know if your set-up works for you as
the same combination doesn't work for me.

Exactly right, Valerie. Thanks for explaining it better than I could.
Neither a DNA chart nor Relationship will do the same thing.

 Alastair,
Thank you for your response. I am not ready to publish as yet. I am
still trying to determine what should go in the book and what type of
charts to use. It is difficult to create a readable chart with more
than 4 generations on a single standard size page. An ancestor chart
or pedigree chart can easily span several generations with
continuations to other pages, but that does not work very well with
descendant charts. I am looking for a way to create a descendant
chart in multiple pages suitable for a book. Another possible way to
reduce the size of a descendant chart would be to show direct
 descendants only.

Re: [LegacyUG] Vista & Legacy 7.0.0.103 problem after changing PC's

2009-08-24 Thread Tom Element

Hi Paul

Thanks for your reply. I have tried attaching different pdf documents
and also added a new path & attached a pdf from a different folder on my
computer, but still no success.
Your thoughts about file changes made me think for sometime today and
I decided to download Firefox again as I had recently upgraded this
software. I went into Windows and set the reset defaults for Firefox to
everything and now I can open all text files whether TXT, DOC, ODT or
whatever. That leaves just the pdf documents problem. (Appears to have
been 2 problems, not 1.)
I uninstalled & re-installed Adobe Reader, but to no avail. On the
Launch window from Options -> Customise I added the path for the Adobe
Reader .exe file and that launches fine from that point but still does
not open pdf documents from the Picture Gallery Icon. Also re-installed
Legacy! Again!
Generally, when I finally get to the solution of a mystery like this
I wonder why I didn't think of the answer sooner! :>) I don't
understand if I should be doing anything with Adobe Reader settings
(like sharing, or whatever) as I'm unfamiliar with those factors. Maybe
an Adobe expert can put me straight.

At least some progress has been made today!

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Paul

Thanks for your reply. I have been through the process of setting defaults
according to Vistas instructions, and every file/document opens
from Windows explorer. Going through Options -> Customise -> Launch I
set an Alternate Reader to Adobe Reader and it didn't work with that either.

It seems to me, as one without technical knowledge, the pdf & rtf icons in
the Picture Gallery are the same as "Shortcuts" which are not working. Why
not working I'm now at a complete loss.

Tom

Tom,

I am a bit late coming into this thread, so maybe you have tried this.

You have already confirmed that the new PC has Open Office and Adobe
installed, right? Could it be that the default programs has not been
set for the file types you are trying to open in Control Panel -->
Default Programs
--> Set Associations. A quick way to test this is to navigate to one
--> of the

files in Windows Explorer and double click on it.

Hi Kirstin

I have absolutely no problems with attaching or opening Pictures. But
I still cannot open PDF, RTF or ODT Document files by clicking on
their respective icons after having added them by the "File" button in
the Picture Gallery.

I can open TXT files and DOC files.

Also, I've discovered I cannot create PDF file of Reports but I can
create TXT reports.

I sure hope someone gets an idea about this mystery.

Tom, I agree that the thumbnail shows up in the Picture Gallery but
can't be opened. I can open it fine by going back to the Picture

With regard to the second part, I clicked Delete & Open list for a
path where I know I have documents that I attached to people. I found
both myself (which also has pictures attached) & my husband (who has
no pictures attached). So I am not able to duplicate your second
problem. But I only just attached those 2 documents (and they were
the same document) to test your problem, so maybe someone who has
more documents attached could test your problem.

Hi Kirstin

Not exactly. The Picture Gallery shows Thumbnails of photos &
symbols of Documents, as you'd know. Pictures (JPG files) attach

Open Office files or RTF WordPad files to the Picture Gallery by
using the "File" button they will not open when I double click on
the Thumbnail. After adding TXT files or Open Office files with a
