Pat, I am having to go off memory here, but it is pretty obvious when you see it - if that is not an oxymoron! Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy unable to lock file
Pat, How's your hard drive space? It might be having a problem creating some temporary work files on the drive due to lack of space. I'd also look over the drive for any left-over temp files that didn't get deleted after the crash. No, I'm not sure where to look - don't know where the PDF utility might put them. First place I'd look would be: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents(where is your log-in ID) Note that these locations might vary depending on what version of WIndows you have. Maybe a better method would be to use Microsoft's Disk cleanup utility. Under my XP, it is at: START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, Disk Cleanup If it isn't there, you may need to install it. When it asks what you want to remove, you would want to check at least: Temporary Internet Files Temporary Files (this should catch both of the above directories) Note that there are some 3rd party utilities available that do the same thing - but their names escape me at the moment. You also may want to run a memory test utility to see if your memory has gone bad, but I suspect a full harddrive. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy unable to lock file
I had the same problem with a long PDF, and found somewhere, whether on the Legacy site or somewhere not obvious in Help, that Legacy cannot create long PDFs. Probably because of their very outdated PDF version (see recent thread on that). You get error messages and Legacy crashes. No fix available, and since the PDF function is low on their priority list, as the recent thread concluded, not likely to use a current version of PDF, so long PDFs are not possible from within Legacy. Some on this list suggested buying and installing you own PDF creator. Sigh. I'm right in thinking that neither the location report (which we have just discussed under another heading), nor a fan chart can be included in the publishing center? Re: [LegacyUG] Census information
I guess my problem stems from my history with computers. I grew up in the days that if you did something on a computer more than twice, you write a program to automate the task. (This was back in the 70s when most people still didn't believe such a thing as a personal computer was very useful.) When I look at a list of sources, I would much rather see three or four sources that are easy to locate and then add the state, county, and city information in the detail record. I see the census as a single source with a series of volumes, one for each state. Each volume would have a number of chapters, one for each county. Guess I'm a lumper, but that seems much more practical to me. Just one man's opinion... Re: [LegacyUG] No report indices in text format, other bugs in reports
It seems to be designed that way. If you go through each of the reports you will see what printing options are available on the right, under the image of the printer. Family and descendant will do text, html, and pdf. Pedigree will only do pdf. Not sure why they aren't available in rtf because it is certainly capable of doing it. My plan is to do all my writing in Word, and importing a pdf of group sheets, etc. as images into the document. I'm just disappointed that I can't create an rtf of the source report so that I could then create a bibliography and reference that in my text. Agreed, and I'm having an issue right now with some state documents that contain many volumes, but every document has a separate title. Fortunately only a handfull of records are affected, but it looks like I'm going to have to split in this case and make every volume a separate source. So, I guess it works both ways. Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcom problem
Margaret, I'm not clear on what you are trying to do, but a MHT file is not a GEDCOM file. It contains markup text for browsers. If you know what to do, open the file in a text editor and remove the markup languages, then save it as a plain text file with the .ged suffix. You will then have to import the new Gedcom file into Legacy. Legacy does not open Gedcom files.
