When I create an event, where is the best place to enter the notes.
Right now, what I am doing is if I quote the source, I put the quote in
the source details. If I just make a comment in reference to the
source, I put the comment in the event notes. I've not done a lot with
reports other than to print a few for proofing, so I'm not sure how
best to do this.

I would like to know what other people do, and if there is a best way
to do this to get the information printed on the reports.

It all depends on what is meant by "Notes"!

If I want to make a comment or note about the Event itself, I will put
it into Event Notes.

If I want to include the actual text of the Source in the Citation I
enter it in Source Text.

If I want to make a comment or note about the Source, I will make it in
Source Comments.

And while we're on the subject, general notes about the individual go in
General Notes and stuff that is relevant to my researches and really
only of interest to me goes in Research Notes. I do not include the
latter in Reports.

I'm assuming when you say source text and source comments you are referring
to the detail text and comments. That's what I was saying, only not so
clearly as you did.

Thanks for the response.

Again, it depends! It's rare that I have a Master Source which doesn't
have various different Source Details so Comments might go with either
Master or Detail (or different Comments in both) but Text is more likely
to go with the Detail.

When my Source is, for example, a Website I will include in the Master
Source Text a description of the website, usually copied and pasted from
the site itself. For example, "The information included in the India
Office Family History Search website is taken from a card index hitherto
available only at the British Library. The card index was compiled by
members of staff at the India Office Records from the mid-1970s onwards
to meet the growing interest in genealogy."

[LegacyUG] Global Spell Checker

2009-10-14 Thread SgtBob
When I first converted to Legacy via a GEDCOM file a year or so ago, I noted
lots of words in the notes had been imported with a space in the word. i.e.,
‘date’ might be ‘da te’, ‘birth’ might be ‘bir th’, etc. So, I have tried
making manual corrections while using the ‘Global Spell Check’ feature.
Unfortunately, when I encounter ‘da te’, there is no option available to make
that into ‘date’, so after I complete the spell checking for a particular
general note, I then select the ‘Skip to Next’ feature, which takes me to the
next individual who has a note error.

To check on my progress, I exit the spell checker and go to the note for the
specific individual who I had just corrected. To my consternation, the note
has not been corrected as I had hoped – the ‘da te’ type spelling error remain.
This is not a fault with the spell checker, since it is looking for misspelled
words, but this ‘da te’ issue isn’t being corrected either. I believe I have
thousands of words like this in the notes for a lot of my entries and it
appears to be a rather large undertaking to correct.

Is there anyway to manually correct this during use of the spell checker as I
am doing by making the manual correction and then select some feature that will
permit this manual correction to take effect in my notes?

[LegacyUG] Sources

2009-10-14 Thread Tom Thorpe
Good Morning All,

A Master Source question.  Because I produce and attatch a digital
image of every source within Legacy, why would I need to cite any other Master
Source other than the "Personal Collections" one I have created?

Example: from the NY State Archives, I obtained a copy of my ancestor's death
certificare.  That image is now attached to my source listing as a multimedia
image, for anyone to see.   Could I not just group it under a master source
called "Personal Collections" and be done with it?  Why would I also need to
list a Master Source as New York State Department of Health, repository New
York State Archives, etc.,when anyone wanting to verify my work can look right
at the attached copy of the original?

Thanks.

As long as you know what the error is you are looking for - such as "da
te" you can use Search and Replace.

Tom,

Am I understanding you correctly, you intend to publish every certificate
either in a report or on a website? Have you considered how much space that
would take up on either?

In any event it is a breach of crown copyright to publish any UK government

Good suggestion except that not all the words are 'da te', there are

Because the purpose of sources is to tell others (or remind yourself)
where you found that information.

It may help you to take a look at the entries under "Source" in the Help

In my way of thinking, "Personal Collections" implies you attended the actual
event, not found a document that proves it., But it is your choice how you wish
to do things. A source (IMHO) should be a  'path'  for someone else to
follow, for re-creating, in the future. I have recieved documents from 3
different relatives, in what seems similar to your concepts.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources

2009-10-14 Thread Janis L Gilmore
Tom,

I understand the question. If you have the document, why cite it?

Answer. Even if you have the document, you might sometime need to know where
it came from. You may see genealogy as a hobby, and don¹t feel worried about
professional standards but you might want to be aware that the work that
you are doing now, while it may be quite sound, cannot be considered lasting
if it is not properly sourced. Your citations protect your long hours of
work.

I suggest that you invest in a guide to genealogical source citations. The
most widely accepted authority is Evidence Explained by Elizabeth Shown
Mills.

Good luck to you.
