[LegacyUG] SourceWriter output question

2009-10-25 Thread Charles Apple
On some of the SourceWriter templates (for example the Family Group Sheet)
the address is displayed as [ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE,] in formatting the
output for Footnote/Endnotes and Bibliography. What controls this display,
and where is it located?

I have searched, and searched and can't find it.

Hi Dede,

The SW template I use for the "United States Obituary Collection" at
Ancestry.com is "Periodicals > Newspapers > Online database"

If anyone has used the "United States Obituary Collection" on Ancestry, I'd
like to know which Source Template you used.

Thanks for any help and advice. I'd like to get this right to begin with and
not have to "re-do," since I already have enough of that on my plate!

Thanks Richard for the instructions on converting sources with Access. And
thanks to all other users that offered their helpful support. Us newbies
need all the help we can get. Maybe someday (soon I hope)I will be able to
return the assistance and help others in this User Group.

RE: [LegacyUG] More than 2 authors

2009-10-25 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Ray:

One option would be to use the template Book > Book, authored > Author known
> Basic format. In the field for the author's last name, just list the
surnames of all three authors: Elliott, Walker, Stratford-Devai. Leave the
other name fields blank. That will give you a reasonably thorough citation
and equal credit to all three without clobbering up the bibliography.

I am trying to input a source which is a standar book with three
distinguished authors. I am oresented with the choice of a single
author or two authors but neither of these options apply.
Is there a way to show three authors in a master source?
Thanks

RE: [LegacyUG] source template for obituary collection?

2009-10-25 Thread Cathy-0
For any obituary I use the newspaper template for the source regardless of
where it was found. For those found on Ancestry, I merely add Ancestry as
the repository. And if I were to see a newspaper at a library, then the
library would be linked as the repository.

For me, Ancestry.com is merely a repository and not a source. While
Ancestry does include source information on all their databases, I just use
their information in completing my source citation in Legacy.

I haven't actually used that Obit collection, but I have used another
online collection. At first I couldn't find a template that seemed
obviously designed for the purpose, but I ended up using

Cemetery records>Grave markers, plaques, tombstones, monumental
inscriptions>online images

which works quite adequately for me.

Tom,

I understand the question. If you have the document, why cite it?

Answer. Even if you have the document, you might sometime need to know where it
came from. You may see genealogy as a hobby, and don’t feel worried about
professional standards – but you might want to be aware that the work that you
are doing now, while it may be quite sound, cannot be considered lasting if it
is not properly sourced. Your citations protect your long hours of work.

I suggest that you invest in a guide to genealogical source citations. The most
widely accepted authority is Evidence Explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills.

Good luck to you.

2009-10-25 Thread Michele Lewis

Yes, in the block for the 2nd authors LAST name do this...

Anderson, Margaret Davis

(Anderson being the last name of the 2nd author and Margaret Davis being the
name of the 3rd author).

It will print like this...

Entrekin, Marybeth, Catherine Anderson, Margaret Davis

(the first author is always listed last name first but the subsequent
authors are first then last)

If you use the 2 Authors template and in the 2nd Author Surname field
you enter "Bloggs and Jane Doe" (with the other fields filled in
normally) your Footnote/Endnote citation will correctly read "Joe Blow
and Bill Bloggs and Jane Doe" and your Subsequent Citation will read
"Blow and Bloggs and Jane Doe" which might be acceptable to you, but the
Bibliography comes out a bit of a mess, which is probably a no-no if you
print the Bibliography.

The other alternative is simply to enter the first 2 authors in the
usual way, then copy and paste the result into the Override fields and
simply add the name of the third author in the correct format.
