[LegacyUG] Setting Birth Location for tagged individuals

2009-10-27 Thread Roger Jarrett
Hi

I was wondering if anybody can help with this problem.

I have a large number of tagged individuals that I want to set their birth
location to be the same. At the moment I cannot see any way to quickly do
this other than editing each individual separately.

I am able to use Microsoft Access and SQL if somebody could point me to the
relevant tables and fields.

Regards
Roger

Re: [LegacyUG] Former generations users

2009-10-27 Thread S. Fry

Hi Judy,
I used Generations EasyTree for many years before switching to Legacy 7. One
reason I chose Legacy was its similarites to Generations in how data is
presented (the interface.) But Legacy has so many wonderful features that
Generations never had!

The biggest tip I have for you is to learn to use the clipboards, both the
Source clipboard and the Event clipboard. These are also two of the features
that were the hardest for me to learn how to use. I read and re-read the
help files "Clipboard, Source" and "Clipboard, Event" many times, and read
postings to this list before it finally clicked for me. But once learned, it
makes adding the same event or source to many different people an absolute
breeze.

The second tip would be to decide early on how to organize and name your
sources as this will determine how they appear in the Master Source List,
and it will make it much easier for you to find the source again. In Legacy
the Master Source List is displayed in numeric and alphabetic order whereas
in Generations the Source List is in order by the number assigned to the
source when you entered it. There has been a great deal of discussion on
this list about how to organize sources -- to lump or split, to group by
state or by event (birth, death, marriage, etc.) and on and on. You can
check the archived messages at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/

If there is something specific about using Legacy that you would like to ask
about, please do. There are many people on this list who have used Legacy
for many years, who are always willing to help, and who know much more about
Legacy than I do.

If you want to contact me off-list, that will be fine also.

RE: [LegacyUG] Computer Crash - Lost Legacy Program:

2009-10-27 Thread William H. Boswell
That's a coincidence! My main data drive crashed Monday. Fortunately, I
keep an external drive exclusively for old and new data where I also keep my
current genealogy data in case the main data drive dies. I've been down
this road so many times before because you can't trust computers.

I would suggest if you don't want to invest in hardware for backing up to
CD/DVD's, you can get those USB memory sticks (sometimes called thumb
drives) for about $20 or less and backup your data to those. They're also
very useful if you want to take your data with you. They small and some
hold several gigabytes of data.

2009-10-27 Thread Charles Apple
Hi Jackie,

Welcome to the list. Yes, I switched from TMG 7 to Legacy 7.0 Deluxe, and I
would definitely "NOT" switch back to TMG for a variety of reasons. I had
been using TMG for about 15 years. Although it is a daunting task to clean
up all the records, the finished product is well worth the effort. I would
suggest asking yourself one question, and let the answer to that question
dictate your actions. What is your Vision for the final outcome of all of
your research? Finally a Quote from Stephen Covey "Keep the End in Mind."

Hope this helps and good luck.

2009-10-27 Thread WALTER D. CONNER
You may want to wait a bit longer, I just discovered bad problems with printing
Source Reference numbers, the Sources are listed appropriately but not all of
the reference numbers appear in the Report when printed out.

I am afraid they may put too much emphasis on adding gee haws and not enough on
making sure that what they already have really works as it should. Been a
Legacy user since early Legacy 2. This is not the first time this sort of thing
has happened. I just wasted about $100 on paper, binding and postage of reports
to libraries to find out that they are no good.

list. I know there have been "format" problems if there are carriage returns
after the Notes. This is not the case with my Events, so I assume that there
should be a blank space between each. Then what would cause there NOT to be
a blank space?

No, that's the way the forward and back arrows on the main toolbar under
the menubar, have always worked. To move through a set of tagged
individuals (or tagged marriages), you use the left and right arrows
(one pair for each of individuals and marriages) at the bottom of the
screen.

Note: whilst not being able to replicate your tagged/untagged problem, I
can report something of a similar, unexpected nature in the operation of
the Index tab. If you add individuals and marriages to the database
using the Family tab, then the Index tab doesn't update with the new
entries until you choose a different sort sequence.
