Cathy,

I enjoyed hearing about your respective styles of doing genealogy. I
started doing genealogy years ago, but still consider myself a beginner,
since I go in fits and starts and haven't done a lot. I am new to Legacy,
however, pretty comfortable with computer programs and figuring out the
shortcuts, so I look forward to exploiting the program to it's fullest when
possible :-)

..Interesting idea about your filing system. I see your point about
cross-referencing.

Nice talking with you!

My friend and I work very differently.

I'm far more computer literate than she is and far more comfortable using
the screen for information. She on the other hand prints and keeps hard
copies of all sorts of things - and even hand writes or types FGSs as she
 doesn't like the Legacy layout.

When I want to see where I'm up to with a particular person, I review them
on screen in Legacy or print to PDF
and read on screen. I check that I have everything I've found entered
properly in Legacy and then decide what to do next.
She checks that she has everything she has in her paper file and works from
the paper to see what to do next. Entering stuff into Legacy is one of her
 last steps.

We think differently but she does very good research. She's been doing
family history from before it was dreamt that you might do it on computer.
The Ahnentafel system is imprinted on her brain :-) I'd have to look it up
to code anyone. Working from many papers comes naturally to her - I just end
up with a big mess and a confused mind ;-)

She files by family. I file by type as again, I just get into a mess if I
try to file by family - which family when more than one is mentioned on the
source paper? Will I copy and put it with both or try and remember to have,
use and look at a cross reference sheet? ... Just too hard for me. :-)

Everyone needs to find the way that works best for them. However, it's
worth seeing what the computer can do for you and let it get on with it so
you have more time for other things.

Hmm.. Both Cathy and Wynthner have good points... I guess I could just label
my e-files and paper files according to RINs...

I guess it's my obsessive need for orderly numbering that makes me resist
the seemingly disorderly numbering of whoever gets entered first.. But
then I guess the point of orderliness is to be able to find your information
quickly and easily, and RIN/MRINs certainly do that...

...so does no one use Ahnentafel here who uses Legacy?

[LegacyUG] ahnentafal numbering in User ID

2008-06-02 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
Hello all,
I just started working with vs. 7 today. I would like to use the ahnentafel
system as a secondary system, using the User ID space.
Is anyone else doing this? My question is, when numbering this way do you
use leading zeros, which makes sense for computer file numbers, but then I'm
not sure how many leading zeros to use. I think 99,999 seems pretty
adequate, but what if future generations use my files, and they wind up with
more than that many names?

Thanks for your help!

Most of the time I don't even see them.
I use the Index View to get to a particular person quickly.
I type the surname in the Surname box at the top followed by a comma and
starting to type the first name.

To find other people I use the search. They can then be worked on in the
Search list or tagged for later and all the irrelevant ones aren't there.

Some ideas for finding your way through the unfamiliar names.

If you have your current Legacy file on a USB drive how do you your
multimedia files attached and current? Do they also reside on the USB
  drive?

They could. But for my own purposes I decided to keep them on both
my desktop and laptop computers. The decision was based on the
(then) small size of memory sticks, the huge quantity and size of my
collection of multimedia files (census pages, registrations,
certificates, etc) and the fact that they don't need updating -- only
 additions.

So I have my working Legacy database only on the memory stick, and
copies of the multimedia files on both of my computers.

My memory stick is set up with an AutoRun program so that when I plug
it into either of my computers it automatically makes a backup to it.
Then it checks to see if any multimedia files have not been
archived. Any it finds are copied to the memory stick and will in
turn be copied to the other computer whenever the stick is plugged
into it. Note: if this memory stick is plugged into any other
computer it will not do any copying or backups.

So the memory stick's AutoRun program keeps both computers up-to-date
with the multimedia files (no matter which computer I add them to)
and there's also a database backup on both computers. When the month
changes I have another auto-running program on my desktop computer
that uploads a copy of the latest database backup to a web site.

Rather than have a specific drive letter to identify the memory stick
I've added the shield sword icon to it as identification -- via
its AutoRun.inf file. That way when more than one removable disk is
attached the Legacy one is immediately identified by its icon.

Since setting up a drive for AutoRun is off topic for this list I'll
not go into further details here about how to do this. There's lots
of information available from the web for this.

 Cheers, -- Dave N.

[LegacyUG] Splitting a spouses family off?

2008-05-28 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
Hello all,

I'm one of the relative newcomers that bought version 6/7 and am anxiously
awaiting the new version, which promises to make my learning curve regarding
sources a bit easier (w/ help from the new videos I will be ordering!).

I currently have myself and my husband in the same tree, but since we are
not parents at this point, I'd like to simplify my genealogy work by
separating his tree out from mine (for now). Is there a way to do this?
I've checked the usergroup archives as well as the general help. Lots of
info on spitting regarding sources (also interesting reading for me!), and
some on COMBINING families, but none on separating...

Would appreciate your help!

Re: [LegacyUG] Accessing the Individual Information Screen

2008-03-29 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
Hi Jane,
In my case, I tend to look through my family by way of the Pedigree tab. I
tend to click from one person to another, and when I want to see individuals
information I click again to get the individual's screen. That particular
screen does not show the marriage info.
It is amazing (and so cool) that Legacy is versatile such that people can
view their family trees in one of several different ways :)
Dawn in Jersey

Dawn may be accessing the Individual Information screen from the Index
 tab.
A double click anywhere in the row of your selected person brings up the
same smaller Individual Information screen, but with the Index tab screen
 in the background.
My default is to open Legacy in the Family tab, so, like you I'm used to
 seeing all the info.

consistent error: Error 3044. C/legacy/temp/LG~0.tmp is not a valid path.
Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are

Re: [LegacyUG] Frustrated- constant errors trying to back up file

2008-03-18 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
As I suspected John, it was my typing error. The exact error was Error
3044. C:\Legacy\Temp\LG~0.TMP is not a valid path.

Error 3044. C/legacy/temp/LG~0.tmp is not a valid path.

 The path should look like:
 C:\Legacy\Temp\LG~0.tmp

Please verify what you have and report back.
Yes, the *exact* punctuation used is important.

 John

I have been using Legacy Deluxe for a few weeks now, and generally I
 like
it. However, after several days of frustrating attempts to retry and
 work
around this problem, I am at the end of my rope trying to backup my
 family
files. I am using build (6.0.0.190) of the deluxe version.

When I first started using Legacy a few weeks ago, everything was fine.
  I
backed up a few times (both family and media files) with no problem.
 Now
  I
am getting errors whenever I try any number of techniques to backup
 either
of those files. I started with the obvious- file- backup family file.
I've tried using different locations, and even tried it on two different
computers, and I keep getting Backup Error 504; cannot create temporary
  file.

When I try to back up my media files, I get a different but just as
consistent error: Error 3044. C/legacy/temp/LG~0.tmp is not a valid
 path.
Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are
connected to the server on which the file resides. I am aware of
 typical
naming conventions and used an older convention legacybackup20080317,
 or
  LegacyBackup2008_03_17 and neither works.

I spent an hour and a half tonight just trying to backup my files, and
 I'm
really aggravated now. I read the help files, searched the usergroup
archives, and couldn't find anything close to this problem. Please
 HELP.
  Thanks, Dawn Del Guercio

Re: [LegacyUG] Frustrated- constant errors trying to back up file

2008-03-18 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
thanks all for your help and suggestions regarding my invalid path
problem. Thanks to Brian at Legacy, I was able to correct the problem.
Here is our last exchange, in case future users have the same problem:

i Brian,

Corrected!
Based on your email, the assumption is that the program is located in
C:\Legacy. Because I am a stickler for organization, I moved my Legacy
program to c:\programfiles\Legacy and apparently all the files were moved,
the program didn't recognize the move and was still trying to access the old
locations. Thanks so much for your help!

Dawn

 Dawn,

Use windows explorer to check if there is a
 C:\Legacy\Temp folder on
 your hard drive.

 Start Legacy
 Go to Options Customize Locations
In the Location of temporary files area use the
 change button to add
 C:\Legacy\Temp
When you click Change there will be a New Folder
 button where you can
 create the C:\Legacy\Temp folder.

Re: [LegacyUG] Frustrated- constant errors trying to back up file

2008-03-18 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
Hi Mike. Thanks for the info. I just now tried to save as my family file
to my desktop, which seemed to work, but upon trying to open, it opened a
blank file.
Frankly, I'm not as concerned about the error of file space as I am by the
path name issue that consistently comes up when backing up.

Well, based on the space that the zip files take up, I KNOW I had room
for the backup zip files. I did try to simply save to my family file,
thinking at least that was better than nothing. I don't know how large
my family file is so it it possible that there was not enough space on
  my 1 gig usb drive.

I think what people were trying to say is, the ZIP process requires
space to work with whilst it's busy building the backup file. To do
this, it generally needs a minimum of twice the amount of space that the
final ZIP file will occupy. This is made up of space for the ZIP file
and a workspace. The workspace is probably being allocated in whatever
folder is being pointed to by the TMP or TEMP environment variables.
Judging by your original message, this is the 'temp' sub-folder of the
 C:\Legacy folder.

The TMP and TEMP variables default according to values set at boot time,
and can be located on my Win2000 systems by right-clicking on My
Computer and selecting Properties. Then select the Advanced tab and
press the Environment Variables button. On your system, this will
undoubtedly be different and you should consult your Windows Help system
looking for the phrase Environment Variables or TMP or TEMP.
