I am trying to locate a counter that tells me how many total number of
people in the specific family file.

Do I just renumber the RIN or ??

I know this is a simple thing, but I cant seem to locate it. I also checked
the help file.

I had been using the new Legacy ver 7 without IE7, at first. People can use
the program if they plan to not utilize the new "mapping" feature. This
feature is little more than a pretty thing that you can see on your
computer, but you cannot save the maps (as JPGs, etc.) to your reports or
your individual entries. I think most people will be happy enough without
it, in mapping's current configuration.

Because I have since upgraded to IE7, I cannot confirm how the Home tab
works, or the Search Internet works without IE7 installed. But the rest of
the Legacy program, the database entry and the new sourcing capability,
worked smoothly. There is no need to not install Legacy ver 7 if you decide
against having IE7 on your computer, if you have chosen to use Legacy for
its main capabilities. (Remember the Home tab just came out with Legacy 6,
and searching the internet is also fairly new.)

I hope this helps those who are concerned,

Susan

RE: [LegacyUG] mapping in V7 vs AniMap

2008-05-29 Thread GIDavidson
Nancy,

V7 Mapping and AniMap-two different programs not even close.

Check out:
http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ANB

AniMap is primarily a USA-map of the states and counties that allows you to
check the various county locations by year as they are created.

You may search a location i.e. city and see what county it is in over the
different years as the county boundaries change.

V7 Mapping is a pretty much current visual map of locations with options for
birds eye, street and other views.

I also have had the same Error 91 and followed the support suggestions. At
first I just did a file maintenance check/repair to clear the problem,
however, this was needed every time if did a backup.

I later did an export to legacy file to create a new file and cleared the
problem for several days; however, it has since come back

Windows XP with plenty of memory. I am happy to know I am not alone. Maybe
there is a support fix for this at a later date!

The official Legacy answer is to go to the support pages and look at the
"errors by number". I've reported this problem twice and tried some of the
solutions offered on the support page. I've even changed computers and in
doing that gone from XP to Vista. But I still get the problem. Not every
time I do a backup, but frequently. It seems that the longer one has Legacy
open then the more likely you are to get Error 91. As you say, after
pressing the Quit button and re-entering Legacy it works perfectly.

As you see, the solutions offered talk about jet updates etc, and refer to
several operating systems and even say that if you have XP you don't need to
do that one. Well, I have Vista now and that operating system isn't even
mentioned!

After last reporting it I again got the stock answer from Sherry (despite
having said that I had tried the solutions offered on the support pages).
After replying I was then asked what task I was carrying out when it failed.
In case you are reading this Sherry (as you've not responded again), IT WAS
A BACKUP.

I'm sorry you have the problem as well as me, but pleased in as much as I
don't feel alone!

Jack

Yes, I agree with the pop up question to give the user the option to view
additional field.

Your experience below has given me what I think could be a good idea. You,
and others have not noticed that there were more fields to be filled in. In
our Merging feature, when comparing two individuals, if there are more
events than will fit on the screen, you can scroll to view them. If you
attempt to merge the two people without scrolling to see all of the events,
Legacy pops up a statement saying "You haven't looked at all of the events
yet. Would you still like to merge the people anyway?"

What do you think about this idea - if you click on the Save button in the
SourceWriter, but there are more fields that you haven't scrolled down to
see, Legacy could pop up a statement/question about the additional fields.
This may prevent us from not noticing the additional fields.

Thanks Dave! Man, I know it's getting pretty late bacause I just
totally missed the scroll bar on my detail screen! Now it works
perfectly!! It's really too bad the fields can't all fit on one page
because I'll bet you that more people than just me are going to
overlook this too. It might be worth it to try to reformat this a
little in a future update.

Geoff, I apologize for taking up so much of your time on this because
I know you are very busy with other stuff right now. I think we will
all really appreciate the hard work you have put into this source
writer once we get used to using the input fields.

I still would love it if you could share with us some of the practices
you have used in converting your sources over. Do you update a single
census master source for a single county and then convert all the
detail associated with that new source, or do you work through all the
master sources first and then work through the myriad details attached
to them? This is just something that I'm sure would benefit many of
us. You could sort of bring us along on your learning curve.

Anyway, I can now go to sleep and dream about tomorrow's task ahead of
me in converting at least some of my census sources. The output looks
good to me now!

RE: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files

2008-06-18 Thread GIDavidson
Ron,

Thanks for the time and reply.

I used the same report, customize/options/locations/test multimedia paths.

The missing photos for people did give a RIN #, the missing photos for
source detail citation just reads: Source Detail Citation (5).jpg.
I was able to find and correct the missing people photos, however, can't
figure out and find the source photos.

No problem, there weren't that many and I just used the option to delete the
paths for the missing source photos to clean up the problem.

George,

Which report are you referring to and where is it? I ask because your format
seems to be different to mine. I went to Customise>Options>Locations>Test
multimedia Paths and the log format is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ron Ferguson\My
Documents\legacypicts\ww1grda0001.bmp
Event Picture: R.A.O.B.: William Arthur Ferguson [19] where the 19 refers to
the RIN. Your (63) looks more like a file name?

RE: [LegacyUG] Source conversion

This bullet is found next to a new source created by the new source writer
only. Your old sources will remain the same, only the new sources will have
this little black bullet (shows the source was created by the source writer)

Hello Geoff.

Thanks for these instructions; but I've run into a wee problem.

In Para 1), below, you state:

..."The SourceWriter style citations have a small
black bullet at the beginning in the Source List Name column."

Well, I don't see that bullet?
I have checked the Options/source and the Source Writer is enabled.
What have I missed?

Yes there sure is, just right click in the birth, death name label area and

Elizabeth:

So you're talking about the preferences under Options > Customize? In that
case, yes, all of mine were retained--including "show 1/2 kids" and date
display.

Thanks, Kristen. I have no idea whether report options were retained. Some
of the obvious ones customizations that didn't "stick" were 1/2 kids, date
display, and which source system to use. There were others, too.
