Re: [LegacyUG] Master Location List help

2009-11-09 Thread Laurence E Stephenson
2009/11/10 Charles Apple apple1...@embarqmail.com:
I have been cleaning up my Master Location list. Previously, when I selected
a location the Map would automatically zoom to that location, with a Large
Red push pin pointing to the Lat. And Long. For the location.

For some reason that has stopped. When I select a location, the map remains
static, regardless of the location, and the Large Red push pin has
 disappeared.

 How can I correct this?

Just in case, I am using Legacy 7.0 Deluxe, on Windows XP Pro. And IE8.0

 Thanks

 Charles

Re: RE: [LegacyUG] Installing (2nd) Legacy on laptop for travel - Dropbox

2009-07-25 Thread Laurence E Stephenson

Has anyone any experience using Dropbox so that each computer is
automatically updated with the new data? If yes, can you please
give me the Dummy's version of the step-by-step process to have my
Legacy Family Tree program on both of my computers using Dropbox.

Or, if Dropbox isn't a good choice, please let me know before I try
 it.

Hi Donna
I have used Dropbox and it worked fairly well, BUT I found that 3 out of five
times I started Legacy it would come up with a fault and close. When I restarted
it was ok.
I now use a smart drive. I bought a four Gig Sandisk drive and have my database
and photos on it.
That way it doesn't matter weather I am using the desktop or laptop I always
have an up to date database. When I finish I backup to the computer I was using
that way I always have a current backup.
Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Personal Knowledge vs. Interview?

2009-07-03 Thread Laurence E Stephenson

Anyone have a thought on when to use Personal Knowledge and when
to use Interview? My parents, aunts and uncles told me a lot of
information about their large family (Mom, Dad and 10 children who
all lived well into adulthood). I did not write a transcript of
the discussions but did enter them into my genealogy software.

Hi Cathy

I use personal Knowledge as follows

I create a source for each individual whom gives me informal verbal information.
In the source I name the Individual who gave me the information.
In the citation detail I put, Principles Mother or whatever, principle being
who the information is about.

I feel an Interview is either a written question and answer session, or a taped
interview.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

Some memory sticks here, come with U3 software pre-installed on
them. Although I don't use it, the software is supposed to be able
let you put an installation package on the stick that will be
installed on which ever machine you plug the stick into.

Sorry Mike but U3 only works with what are called Portable Apps they only work

RE: [LegacyUG] Double-checking: Naming documents and using File ID numbers

2009-04-19 Thread Laurence E Stephenson

How about if the person gets married a 2nd or 3rd time and gets new
MRINs? Do you then put any new documents into the new file?

When the new marriage is created I create a new file and just carry on with any
certificates or what ever going into the new file.

Some thing else I do that Geoff doesn't. I put the MRIN number into the User ID
box. When John Doe marries his MRIN may be 173 so I put 0173 in his User ID
Now when he marries again his new MRIN is 205 so in his User ID will now be
0173/0205 but his new wife will only have 0205 in her User ID unless she has
been previously married.

Hope this makes sense if not feel free to contact me again.

Good luck

Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Centre

2009-04-01 Thread Laurence E Stephenson
Thanks Jenny
Maybe the following may explain what I am trying to say.

I'm not quite sure why you say the picture ... has no caption and
then you say the attached copy Have you got several copies
of the same picture? If so, see the last sentence below.

On the right hand top of the picture centre there is a tab marked Picture List
and a tab marked Attached Pics.
I entered captions etc in the Picture List and attach the picture to a person in
the Name list I then click on the Attached Pics list and the caption etc is in
place.
When I open the Picture centre the next day and look in the Picture List no
pictures have captions etc.
According to Help the captions should be there.

Caption, Date, Description, File ID #
You can enter caption, date and description information before assigning a
picture to an individual. There is also a field for a File ID # if you are
assigning these numbers to your pictures. These entries are remembered by
Legacy for future use even if the picture has not been assigned to anyone yet.

All the pictures are in one folder and are the only ones used for Legacy

In thinking about this, I can't think of a time I would print an
Individual Report. I believe I would always print a Family Group Report
or Descendant Report if a person had been married.

Can anyone that has printed an Individual Report tell me what the

Thank you.

Hi Cathy
The way I see it, an INDIVIDUAL report is just that a report on the
individual and should not include family events that's the job of the
FAMILY REPORT. Individual reports only need to mention that the subject
was married. I have always included Family residence in marriage events,
also holidays, and in one case were the where the parents went back to

Since I moved to Gmail some time ago, I have never had to delete a LUG

Very frustrating--I am a paid customer. I wanted to upgrade to the 7.0 Deluxe
from my 6.0 Deluxe. First I downloaded the free 7.0 version and then purchased
the upgrade. In the meantime, I was told I would be emailed the install
password (used to be family for 6.0) so I could at least play around with the
7.0 standard.

Alas, I got no such email and the recorded message on the Tech line (long since
closed) had the OLD password.

Does anyone know the new one for 7.0? I was hoping Legacy would keep up with
their tech recorded messages--don't release 7.0 until you have that in place.
Very frustrating to any customer, free or paying.

As a commercial software company, with a huge base of existing users craving
the new Legacy 7, I don't think it is unreasonable to ask Millennia to tell
us second class customers exactly when we CAN get Legacy 7 (I mean a date -
not soon)

The not-possible-for-all-to-download-at-once argument has no validity.
Firstly, professional download services these days can handle thousands and
thousands of concurrent downloads. Secondly, this issue can come as no
surprise to Millennia, and of course they must have thought about how to
handle this. Thirdly, they have to open up for download at some point and if
this was a real issue, what will they do then?

Children of [HusbFirstName] and [WifeFirstName] (née [WifeSurname])

the [WifeMarriedSurname] was not substituted (it appeared as

correctly) so I will leave it as I first set it up.

It seems this variable doesn't work in all sentences or doesn't work

I would like to put in my two peneth worth. I look at sourceing this bible
thus The the cuttings are pasted in the bible therefore for anyone to see these
cuttings, to be sure they read the same cuttings they MUST read them in this
bible, the bible is therefore the source. the bible would be noted as The Bible
owned as an axample by Aunty Beverley and the repository would be Aunt
Beverley's bookshelf wherever that may be. If any of the cuttings have a name
of the paper AND a date then that would be the source of the cuttting. But then
the Bible Aunt Beverley's book shelf would most likely be the repository unless
you could find where that copy of that issue of the newspaper is actually kept

To my way of thinking, the clippings that were glued in the Bible should not
be sourced without reference to the Bible - which was where you found them,
and continues, presumably, do be the repository in a way. However, if you
can determine where and when they were published, that should certainly be
included with the sourcing.

This might have been asked and answered before, but am thinking that one way to
keep from getting mixed up data on two or more computers would be to make one
computer the prime, and any others read only.

I know I have spent many hours discombobulating things that I excitedly entered

Re: [LegacyUG] attaching .pdf files instead of photo

2007-09-13 Thread Laurence E Stephenson
I am very confused. I thought we were supposed to attach a .pdf
file (as opposed to a picture) in Legacy in the following manner.
Save the .pdf to a folder. In Legacy click on the picture
iconclick on Sound Browse to the folder that has the .pdf file To
find it, click on All files Open it Fill in Legacy caption info
 etc. click OK

It displays a picture that says Sound!!
So how do I vision the .pdf??

 Am I utterly confused?

Double click on it

Rob Miller, Hello
I don't know that you can tweak Legacy but what I do is always 4 digit

in order

I have currently have the scans of my documents named in a manner similar to
below. Windows recognizes that 2 comes after 1, 3 after 2, etc. So all is
well.

MS1 - file name.tif
MS2 - file name.tif
MS3 - file name.tif
MS100 - file name.tif
MS200 - file name.tif
MS300 - file name.tif
MS1000 - file name.tif
MS2000 - file name.tif
MS3000 - file name.tif

However, when trying to attach a file/picture to a Master Source, Legacy
lists the files in this manner below. Trying to find the right one is a bit
of a pain when dealing with a great number of files.

MS1 - file name.tif
MS100 - file name.tif
MS1000 - file name.tif
MS2 - file name.tif
MS200 - file name.tif
MS2000 - file name.tif
MS3 - file name.tif
MS300 - file name.tif
MS3000 - file name.tif

Is there a way to tweak Legacy to get the Load Picture window to sort
Number Portion numerically like the File ID Assistant window does with File
ID's?

Thanks!

that occurred in a private home and I have the address of that home.
However, I do not know whose home it is so have nothing to put in the

Hi ,

Why not put the name of the person who died?

From within Legacy how do you add a census record so you can read it and

I've seen with census records attached are so small one can't even read

[LegacyUG] Entering custody of a child

2007-07-28 Thread Laurence E Stephenson
Hello, LegacyUserGroup Listers

I have an interesting problem and I would apreciate any help.

My daughter has custody of a child as a favour to the Family Court of
Australia, he is not related to her in any way.
He has been with her since March this year (2007) and we do not know if and
when he will go back to his mother, again no relation to my daughter. The child
was stepson to my son in a now broken up defacto relationship.

My question is this, has anybody any suggestions on documenting this child in
her family. I know this is not strictly genealogy but it is Family History.

Would anyone care to share their opinion of the advantage of attaching
files as .PDF rather than .JPG? The example I'll use is a census page.
Why
would one rather attach a .PDF of a census page rather than a .JPG of the

 documents, etc.

while. Technically it allows for same sex marriages. However it still
labels them as Husband and Wife. However you can change the beginning
status of the relationship to Partners and each person is now a partner

I have been debating as to upgrade to the latest FTM (currently have
version 10) or to get Legacy, Roots Magic, or The Master Genealogist
(TMG). I know of only once case where I might consider using this
feature but surprised that Legacy does not have it.

Hi
I have several same sex unions and they work the same as you described
for FTM
In the marriage window you change husband and wife to partner or
anything else you want.

With PAF, looking up the information just took exactly 30 seconds.

Re: [LegacyUG] Out-of-wedlock children

2006-10-18 Thread Laurence E Stephenson

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I posed this question once before, but am still having problems with the
data entry.

I have a cousin, Mary, who had three out-of-wedlock children with three
different men before she married and had six children in that marriage.

For the three out-of-wedlock children, I do not know the names of the
fathers. Legacy insists on adding a father before children can be entered, which
is what I do not want.

I tried adding a dummy father, entering the child and then unlinking the
dummy father from the mother. However, at that point the child is an orphan
with no parents. If I then try to link the child to the mother, I have to
link to the known marriage; again, that is what I do not want.

How can I add the three children to Mary and not have to include unknown
fathers or link the children to the known marriage? Ideas...please.

Jon you can not get around the child having a father, in Legacy and in
life. That is a fact of life.

Legacy needs two people to create a child.
I usually name the father as unknown.
Mary had three liaisons, plus a marraige, thats life
