[LegacyUG] Death location

2009-10-11 Thread Leslie Bagwell
Wow, so many great stories. We should put them in the notes section.
My Dad had Alzheimer's and loved to go for a ride every day. My Mom
took care of him till the last month. When he was cremated she put the
box with the spare tire under the back floor of the station wagon. He
is still there 2 years later, waiting for my Mom. I will get to put
ashes where they wanted and a stone in a 100 yr old family plot with
extra room.

[LegacyUG] Passage Express

2008-01-31 Thread Leslie
Can anyone clarify for me the recent discussion of Passage Express.
I downloaded the program when it was first offered. If I'm understanding
correctly, I can make or link a file to Passage Express, create a CD and send
it to a family member and they will be able to view the material without having
Legacy installed on their computer?

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship designation

2007-12-10 Thread Leslie
Hi Jim,
I used to use Reunion when I had a Mac, they had an option on their report menu
so that you could first select the relationship of a particular person to all
others in the file. Once done, when you printed your family group sheets they
would come out John Jones 2nd Gr.Grandfather etc. in addition to the RIN and
MRIN #'s. It eliminated the need to go to an indexed report of relationships
to find out how that person is related to you. Extremely convenient and
ultimately making memorizing your 8th Gr Grandparents names easier as you see
it each time you're working on the file. Hope this clarification helps and sooo
glad to hear it wil be available in the new version

Would someone elaborate on what exactly Leslie is talking about. I'm not
sure what is meant by printing a relationship to a family group sheet.

  Thanks,

I think the problem here _might_ be that FTM doesn't have a notes section
for what is their equivalent of Legacyevents. There may be no comparable
field in FTM to place that information when importing a gedcom into FTM.
It's been a while since I've used FTM but in the past, no notes section was
available for these recorded events.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 2147024882

2006-10-02 Thread Leslie E. Buege
Gwen,
The problem with W98 is the memory that is used to keep track of running
applications like Legacy Family Tree. This is a fixed amount of memory that
is not affected my the amount of RAM your computer has. It can not be
changed. The information stored there is dynamic in nature so when an
application (or part of an application) closes down, memory used by that
application should be released. If it isn't, eventually you run out of
system resources.
My experience has been that version 6 apparently has problems with releasing
used resources when moving from one part of the application to another. This
even happens when using the same features I used in version 5. So it doesn't
seem to be associated with the new features of version 6.
Since I run a dual boot system (meaning I also have XP on the same computer)
if I need to, I just reboot into XP to finish my task at hand. (For those of
you who are interested, I access the same data file from W98 and XP).
Gwen, what I suggest is that you do is what I have done. Microsoft has
provided a handy resource monitoring application called the Resource
Meter. When running, it resides in the system tray down by the clock. You
should be able to find Resource Meter by going to Start - Programs -
Accessories - System Tools. If it isn't there, you can create a shortcut on
your desktop by right clicking on the file name and selecting send to and
then desktop (short cut). The file name is RSRCMTR.EXE and is located in
the C:\Windows folder. I have the application start up when booting my
computer because I put the shortcut in the Startup folder.
When Resource Meter is running, you will get a warning message when the
resources get low. You might be able shut down other applications that are
running at the time to free up resource memory that Legacy Family Tree
needs. Or, exit Family Tree and reboot your computer to create the most free
resource memory.
For further reading, see:
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=17200581
I believe there must me a memory leak that needs to be fixed by the
programmers. Using the same features in version 6 that were used in version
5 and running into memory resource problems would seem to indicate that
something changed with how memory resources are now being used in version 6.
I don't believe you should have to upgrade to XP to solve this problem. I
also believe that there are a lot of Legacy uses that wouldn't have a clue
as to how to upgrade to XP especially if they are senior citizens like me. I
don't think Legacy wants to force these people to upgrade to XP. It could be
a costly mistake if they ended up loosing some of their files from other
applications in the process.
I hope this helps you Gwen (and maybe others running W98) to at least
monitor the memory usage and to determine the applications that may be using
a lot of resource memory. I would be suspicious of any of the Norton
applications that may be running.
Les

 Hi Les
Thanks heaps for that, I would not think Legacy would put out a program
 update which
was not compatible with Win98SE, as most people are still on that, I
think.
I am going to do a few more things today to see if I can alleviate the
 problem.
 Keep you posted.
 Thanks heaps
 Gwen

The problem is most likely a memory leak which is a Legacy problem.
I too am using W98se with 512 meg of memory. I didn't have this problem
with
 version 5.
I doubt if there is anything the user can do to eliminate this problem -
only the Legacy programmers can fix this.
