Must admit that I used to use PG, but since getting a 10 netbook I've
been tending to use that in preference (though the annoying keyboard
on my X1 phone probably doesn't help much)

2009/8/12 Connie Sheets clshee...@yahoo.com:

 Dede,

I realize this isn't exactly what you're asking, but as someone who finds all
PDA-type devices too small (and too expensive when the higher cell phone
access fees are considered), laptops too big, and thinks a cell-phone should
be used for phone calls, I have been quite happy with my new netbook.

It is inexpensive, lightweight, fits easily in my bag or large purse, has a
reputed 9 hour battery life (and comes close in actual practice), and I can
touch-type on it!  I've taken it to libraries and courthouse basements and
transcribed or abstracted documents directly into Legacy, along with negative
searches into a Research Log I maintain with Legacy's To Do feature.

Upon return home, I just copy my .fdb file via a flash drive back into my
desktop copy of Legacy, and I'm all set.

The only negative is that it took about 10 days to become comfortable with
the smaller keyboard; not much of a negative in my opinion.

 Just something to think about...

It will work on the Pre using Classic (

You could even run it on Windows Mobile using StyleTap, but that's

I have used Legacy Family Tree on my desktop computer for several years, but I
am new to this mailing list.  I am planning a genealogy research trip and am
thinking of getting a netbook to hold Legacy 7 and my genealogy files.  I see
that most of the netbooks have similar processor and memory (1 GB), but there
is a big difference in hard drives.  For example, Dell has 8 or 16 GB solid
state drive, Asus has 120 GB hard drive and Acer has 160 GB.

Does anyone have experience and recommendations on what works best or should be
avoided?  Will Legacy 7 run on the 16 GB solid state drive?

The Asus and Acer models seem to come with built in webcam.  Is this a problem
if you go to a courthouse or library that does not allow cameras?

People may want to try TrueCrypt (free) which lets you have an

definitely recommended if you're storing private data!

should be stored in an encrypted and password protected location on the

 also get stolen).

Just make sure it never gets lost or stolen and that you have a backup of
all that data in another location in case the plug fails on the thumb drive,
the most vulnerable part of the thumb drive.

Personally I'd never store anything of any importance on a thumb drive. I
*always* backup any changed data to the computer in which the drive is
 plugged into before unplugging it.

Thumb drivers were designed to transport data from one computer to another,
not to be a main storage device.

 Thanks for using Legacy.

True, but it is a lot smaller than standard laptops, so it deserved a
mention as it can easily be slipped into a bag, for properly portable
use, I have an Axim x51v running Pocket Genealogist, but keyboards
tend to be easier to type into :)

24 Jun 2008 I posted a leaflet Walking Tour of Nyssa, Oregon
The source detail was building 5.
I did not use the SourceWriter.
I posted this to one person, George.

 25 Jun 2008 I posted a Certificate of Baptism
Nothing was entered in the source detail.
 I used the SourceWriter.
I posted this to three people, Ernest, Ernesta Irene.

To my horror the source detail for Walking Tour of Nyssa, Oregon also
appears for the three people I posted the Certificate of Baptism to.

I will have to go back check every source entry since receiving version
 7.

I would appreciate thoughts on what I am doing wrong.

Most but not all of my sources entered in V6 are UK specific and include a
number of original birth, marriage and death certificates. I stress these
are originals and not copies. They are hand written, issued at the time of
registration and many have postage stamps affixed and official embossed
marks. These are my sources so when I use SourceWriter I can choose the
source type as 'Birth records' for example and the type of birth record as
'Birth certificate'. However the next question is 'Where is the certificate
held?' My view is that I hold it but at the very least a copy of it can be
found elsewhere. The only choices we have though are 'Held at local/county
level' and 'Held at state/provincial level'. Given the GRO setup in England
I don't see either of these as appropriate although I can see how either
might apply. Will there be any flexibility in the wording or user choice to
 create new repository locations?
