Hi Cathy;

Your use of 'at' and 'in' sounds right to me, and my only connection to
Australia is my grandmother was born there 150 years ago.

Hi Susan,
Unless you are planning to submit to NEHGS, I wouldn't worry about it.

From an Australian point of view, to use "born at Dalwallinu" rather
than "born in Dalwallinu" sounds strange whereas "born at Dalwallinu
Hospital", "born at Honeysuckle Cottage" etc is more normal than using "in".

I live at 12 Anyname Street. I live in Perth, Western Australia.

No doubt this is one of the many differences in English versions.

Re: [LegacyUG] Lumping/Splitting or Events

2007-10-21 Thread aseddon.com
Hi June;

I have been doing this rather than using 'sources'. I find it very easy to
attach a graphic, such as a census to a event, then put the event on the
clipboard and past to others that are included in the same event.

As I don't intend to publish in book form, but maybe make a html, I think it
will work.

My work will only be distributed to my immediate family anyhow.

Further to discussions about lumping or splitting sources, if what I am doing
is simply for the benefit of me and my family cannot events be used in the same
way rather than sources. I have been entering things through events and then in
the text part of that event have indicated further details. If I want to check

Re: [LegacyUG] More Help Please

Well, I seemed to have solved my own problem. I tried to uninstall Legacy in
the Add/Remove page and received an error message "Could not open INSTALL.LOG
file.".

In frustration I went to my original downloaded Legacy install file and rerun
it on top of the existing installation and now.

Not only the screens have their save buttons (and others) but the search on the
web works just fine too.

So I guess a reinstall on top of a non-working installation repairs without
first uninstalling works, (sometime).

>From the Legacy News:

June 05, 2007
Ancestry searching error from within Legacy
Ancestry.com has recently made changes to the way customers search
their site. These changes have effected Legacy's ability to
automatically search for a person in their databases. Continue reading
for the workaround

For example, click on the Search menu from within Legacy, then click
on Search Internet for Current Person. You can now choose which
genealogy web site to search. If Ancestry.com is selected, click on
the Search button. Normally Legacy would then search Ancestry for the
currently-highlighted individual and display the results. Because of
the changes made by Ancestry, you will now receive an error message.

Fortunately, Legacy has the ability to create and modify the "search
strings" that are used to perform these automated searches. The
"Ancestry.com" search can easily be modified by following these steps:

Once you are on the "Search the Internet" screen, click on the
Customize Searches button.
Click on the Select button next to Ancestry.com
Click once on Ancestry.com, and click on the Edit button.
In the field the currently begins with http://service.bfast.com...,
replace all of the text in this field with this new link:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=0&tips=0&gsfn=[GivenNames]&gsln=[Surname]&sx=&gs1co=1%2cAll+Countries&gs1pl=1%2c+&year=[BirthYear]&yearend=[DeathYear]&sbo=0&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4%3b_8002%3b_8003&srchb=r&prox=1&db=&ti=0&ti.si=0&gl=allgs&gss=ansmp&so=1&o_iid=21416&o_lid=21416
Click Save, click Select, click Close, now click Search.
Legacy's Research Guidance section also has links to individual
databases at Ancestry.com. For example, on the Preliminary Survey tab,
clicking on the Local Histories tab provides an automated listing of
local/county histories of the areas in which your ancestor lived. Some
of these books are available online. If you click on the Online button
for books that are available at Ancestry, you will still be presented
with Ancestry's error message. Currently, there is not a way to update
the link. However, the book is still available at Ancestry, you will
just have to temporarily manually look it up on their site.

If you have any questions about performing automated searches, please
don't hesitate to contact our support team. We will continue to work
hard to provide a future update that will correct these links, but for
those who want the immediate fix, please follow the steps above.

With a similar situation of an adopted niece I was able to go to the California

gender and the county shown on the adoptee cert and find the birth information

last name with no first name. Even in Los Angeles County it was only about 200

Re: [LegacyUG] Event clipboard

Hi Cathy,

I tried all the good advice, including shutting down the computer overnight and
it still happened.
What I was doing was entering the information on who lived where when in the
"Desc" field of the picture of the house instead of in the notes section of the
event, I guess some way the "desc" field has become part of the photo of the
house.

When I moved the information to the notes section I then get the choice of
changing all copies of the "Master Event" or creating a new copy. Problem
solved.

Hi Art,

Are you sure you are describing your process properly?
It may help to know a bit more how the event clipboard works.
The event clipboard copies the link to the event and its source.
It doesn't copy the content of each field.
So if you edit the original event after you've copied it to
clipboard, the changes will be included when you paste to the next person.

If you copied event A to another person and edited it there (AB) and
then went to the next person without copying an event and pasted the
event there - you are still pasting event A. However, if, in between
you went back and edited event A at the original person (A2) and,
without copying another event, used the paste from event clipboard
for someone else, then
it is A2 that gets pasted. That's because it's the link to that
original event that is copied so what is pasted is whatever that
original link is holding.
I've never seen the data for the original person change if I've
pasted the event to someone else and edited it for that new person.
To answer your first question. Clear the event clipboard by copying
another event.

move out when they get married - some will die, etc.

So much of the event will be the same but some details will change. When I have

also edited.

Another option Art, if you don't know exactly what years were in what
houses, you can enter the residence with just the town name and
overall years in that town, and under notes list the various street
addresses. But if they jumped from town to town and back again, then I
guess you'd just enter them all individually with the street addresses
in the Description field.

If Drew's suggestion doesn't fix it, check that you have Clear List
before Search checked.

Also, if you want people born on either Jan 1 or Dec 31 you'll need
to change your dates to
after 12-31-1974 and before 1-1-1976.

The only unexpected result of this is that I picked up an About 1976
date as they are coded to sort at the beginning of the year before 1 Jan.

You can do a search for people - birth date - equal to - abt 1976 to
identify these.

Hi Richard,

multimedia backup in Legacy actually accomplishes.

Although I initially expected Legacy to back up _all_ multimedia files,
I like this format better, where only the linked images are backed up.

Re: [LegacyUG] Multimedia Backup (was Keeping two databases ... )

2007-08-26 Thread aseddon.com
One wonders why Legacy would have a 'Picture Folder', say that you are backing
up your MM files and not back up the files in the 'Picture Folder' included in
Legacy.

Seems dumb to me

  Hi Art,

Your supposition is correct, in that Legacy doe only backup files that
  are linked to the database.

That is both a blessing and a curse. From a Millennia programmer's
point of view it makes perfect sense. If an end-user has thousands of
image files in various folders (and I do), only those actually used in
Legacy have meaning to that program. That makes good sense to me as
well, in that I don't wish to send all of my image files to my sister as
she only needs those that must show up in Legacy.

From the point of view of an end-user who expected a complete folder
backup, that may be disappointing, but for myself, I use other backups
for the mass of data I keep, so it's a minor point.

Where I still have reservations is the area of receiving a backup
multimedia file from someone else, and having to sort out where to put
all those image files that may be in separate folders say by surname, or
even separate folders for each individual! That's how my sister stores
her image files, and I can see that I'll have a big job getting them all
entered into my system, as those individual folders don't exist on my
system. I will have to copy the files to the appropriate storage
location of my own, trusting that the filenames will tell me what they
are. Since we have a standard convention for naming files, that
shouldn't be a problem, but I'll still have to re-link each file by
making the appropriate entries in Legacy for sources and events.

Hi John

I just extracted the files from my latest Media back-up and what I seem to find
is that Legacy ONLY backs up the files that have been connected to a person. I
have many graphics that I have scanned and census images downloaded etc. that
have not yet been attached and they are not backed up.

I guess if you haven't attached them yet Legacy figures that they are not

Re: [LegacyUG] RE: Scan File Formats

2007-08-24 Thread aseddon.com
Denise,
PDFill PDF Editor is a shareware program available at http://www.pdfill.com/
You can get an evaluation copy that you can see how it works, but it puts a
watermark advertisement on each page when you use it free.
It costs $19.95 to unlock the program to use all functions and get rid of the
ads. You can import directly from your scanner as well as insert and edit text.
I haven't had it too long, but I have scanned multiple pages into the same
document and have edited and created text documents. I like it.

Art, What is PDFFIll PDF Editor? I haven't heard of it.

After thinking about formats a bit more. I agree that TIF would probably be
best for archiving photos, but for multiple page letters that will only be
viewed, not edited, wouldn't PDF be more compact and useful? I believe my new
little scanner will scan directly to a PDF file, I will have to see if it can
combine multiple scans into one file. Otherwise I could have six or eight files
for one letter. I suppose I could just scan and inventory page 1 to get the
basic inventory and then go back and add the rest of the pages. Too bad I have
a job..

And for saving black and white text I have had the best luck scanning
Line Art into PDFill PDF Editor. It gives better copies than Grey Scale or

I agree on your TIFF/JPG comment.

Scan in TIFF. Then create a smaller JPG from that TIFF to keep in the folder
where you have Legacy link to.

In my view, scanning to PDF should only be used to email a copy of a
document to someone.

Denise,

Size is not the only consideration here. As Cathy says, tiff is non lossy
and great for archiving pictures for editing and jpg (not jpeg) for a
finished version for use in reports or web pages.

PDF is somewhat different and one really needs to consider how the pictures
will be used. What format will any reports be in PDF or RTF. On websites to
view a pdf the program calls upon the user's Acrobat Reader program to
display it - is this what one would want?

Even in Legacy a pdf cannot be saved as a picture but must be saved as a
video or sound file.

First off, change your signature line. Precede the current stuff with a
line containing hyphen hyphen space. Most *good* email readers will
recognise this as the beginning of a signature and when someone replies
to a message of yours, truncate your signature and everything that
follows it.

Secondly, I've been trying for ages to get the old fuddy-duddys around
here to try this and also to learn to trim messages. No good. They're
all far too set in their ways. Either that or they're scared to touching

anything they don't know about.

In this instance, when I am sure that there is no identifiable municipal

Gene Y.

In the unincorporated area of Snohomish County, Washington where I live, we
have no shortage of "government". If we need the police, we call the
Sheriff, to pay our taxes, we make the check out to the County Auditor.
Our mail address is Everett, WA, which indicates what post office handles
our mail, but births, deaths and marriages are COUNTY records.
So take your choice, you can use the mail address, which is not legally
accurate, or you can call it Snohomish County, WA, USA, which is legally
accurate.
, Snohomish County, WA, USA will probably search better and you could do
something like "unincorporated area, Snohomish County, WA, USA".

Up until about 1930 I believe over 50% of the US population live outside
cities, so there is a good chance that chasing your family back through US
history you will find many ancestors did not live in an incorporated city.
Many townships might have a name, but not only no governing body, but no
residents, so that the first people that would settle there would still deal
only with the county.

If I send a Passage Express CD to someone, is it acceptable to send them an

And how much disk space would be required to install Legacy and run the

When a Passage Express CD is created and sent to someone else, does Legacy
