Another Name for XX is XX is the last line of text for a person so it
kind of gets lost if the reader doesn't read every word, but if they are
looking for a specific nickname or Alternate Name in the Index, it won't
be there. I have gone through the 3,000 page Descendant's Book Report in
Word and added code for all Alternate Names so they'd appear in the
index, but that took a lot of time. It would be much easier if it were
part of the Legacy program itself.

I think you also have to check the "Alternate given and surnames" box
in the upper left corner of the "Include" tab under "Report Options."
(If alternate names aren't included in the report, they obviously
won't be in the Index.)

Re: [LegacyUG] How to identify the commonly used first name?

2009-02-10 Thread Allison Nelson
Someone on the TNG users group (I am sorry I cannot locate exactly who
posted it or exactly where at this moment) posted on the TNG discussion
group and pointed out that if you put the commonly used name in "."
quotations marks, that it will be correctly picked up by TNG as the nickname
or commonly used name. I tested this and it does work so am currently
changing my Legacy database to this format. I find it also helps It also
shows up with both the nickname and the given names in the Name List in
Legacy which I find very helpful in identifying for example, the correct
John Smith out of 5 John Smiths born on similar dates.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to identify the commonly used first name?

2009-02-09 Thread Leon Chapman
The alternate name appears in my Index of Names in the Modifed Descendant
report.
It has a prefex of ~ so that you know it is an alternate name.
I am using Legacy 7.0.0.86 - the latest build.

You do have to choose to include alternate names in the Index option in the
Descendant Report window.

If you have a large database (or even a small one) - use the a.k.a.,
otherwise you will pull your hair out looking for an individual in the index.
Make sure you have "include Alternative Names" checked in the options on the
name index.

If you put the nickname in quote in the "given" name field, then in the
printed reports you can opt to have the nickname used in the narative.

Jane "Bunny" Doe

Bunny was born .

If you put it in the AKA field (which is perfectly acceptable) then you will
be this

Jane Doe

Jane was born

Cathy,

Although it may feel awkward, I think the better way is to write it as:
Robert Blair "Blair" Surname

I you enclose the first instance of Blair in quotes, it implies that
"Blair"
is truly a nickname, rather than a legitimate name. Doing it this way
allows
you to show that his full name was Robert Blair Surname, but that he went
by

his middle name.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to identify the commonly used first name?

2009-02-07 Thread Mary Young
You would put Robert Blair "Blair". The quoted name must be an
"extra", as there's an option to "Remove Given Names from Reports".

RE: [LegacyUG] How to identify the commonly used first name?

2009-02-07 Thread ronald ferguson

Cathy,

Robert Blair "Blair" Blogs

When compiling reports ensure that the "Use familiar names" is checked (if you
wish) and also check "Remove quoted names"

[LegacyUG] How to identify the commonly used first name?

2009-02-07 Thread Cathy Vallevieni
When a person's middle name is the name they used and were known by,
do you put quotes around that middle name to make it clear that was
the name used? I know if someone had a name Elizabeth and went by
Betty that you would enter Elizabeth "Betty" in the first name
field. Not sure that someone named Robert Blair who went by Blair
should be entered at Robert "Blair" but how else to show this is the
name he used?

Thanks for any ideas.
