Re: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
Fear not, although this will probably not help you. The mail has slowed to a crawl, I think around 24 hours coming or going. All you have to do is pay attention to where you install it. I think Legacy 6 is inside C:\Legacy. Just put Legacy 7 into C:\ . not into the previous Legacy folder that contains Legacy 6 if you're following. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html Kirsten Bowman wrote: Now I'm scared. RE: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
I haven't a clue as to how it got installed there! I guess to remove 6 you may have to go to the register and delete it in the Millenia folder but you may be able to do it using the uninstall file in the Millenia 6 folder. BTW others have asked how to install one version when two are installed, and other than using the Register, using the uninstall file in the Legacy folder is the only way. For right now there is the option of using the old format or using the sourcewriter for your sources. There is not a source conversion option available right now. Just think... there are probably as many ways sources are entered as there are users of Legacy not sure how they would be able to create a user friendly conversion tool that would work for everyone or at least most. Heck I know I don't even have all of my sources standardized I can't image trying to write something that would work for a huge user base. Kristen, I think this only happened to JL because he chose a destination folder other than the default. He was going to put 7 into his program folder (which I considered, as well, but did not do). My download was very smooth, and I don't think you need to worry about it. Just make a good back-up before you do it. JL, correct me if I am wrong in what I have told her here about the problem you encountered. Re: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
My first installation of v.7 went into the middle of Legacy 6, so I just deleted the whole folder, and reinstalled it under C:\ so it now sits alphabetically under the v.6 installation in the Windows folder tree. I copied over my Picture folder contents and my main database, so it could transform it into the new v.7 database. I can run them both easily (keeping separate names for the backup zips of course and different color schemes for quick ID) but I'm finding no point since I can turn off the Maps, the Source Writer and married names for women. Without those, it's v.6 with benefits (eg. editing from the Master Lists) but without the confusion of too many changes at once. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html Gene Young wrote: Leon Chapman wrote: Mark: I would recommend installing in a new Directory (e.g., c:\Legacy7\) Back up your existing Legacy 6 database and picture files. If you wish to keep v6, be very careful. I told v7 to install to a new directory (Legacy7) and it went ahead and installed it in Legacy (overwriting v6). Fortunately it turned out OK as I see no need now to keep v6 available and a plus was that v7 has kept all the custom settings I had in v6. RE: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
Ok here is what I did as I was too impatient to wait for a response and this mailing list took hours to post my query (I still cant believe everyone uses a horrible mailing list rather than a forum). Anyway, what I did was first to backup my entire legacy directory (c:\Legacy) and all my datafiles. I found further details on the download page that said to uninstall legacy 6 so I did then and then installed V7. Since it needed a password and I didnt have it after many hours I emailed legacy and they sent it to me. I then installed the new one into c:\legacy. It picked up all my old settings and preferences as the uninstall didnt uninstall everything, obviously, and v7 works fine. By uninstalling you do get some old drivers off your system which is probably the main advantage to doing it this way. I expect in the next week I will get a reg key for v7 and will then be very happy. I agree with many users that sending the pw when you dl is not working very well, and it didnt work for me but have a thought for Legacy. They will literally tens of thousands of people hammering the system at the one time. There will be glitches. For a little bit of patience, and some manners, everyone will end up a lot happier. However, if you choose to uninstall Legacy v6, you must uninstall from the shortcut in the Start Menu folder or from the shortcut in the v6 folder in Windows Explorer. If you use Control Panel, you risk also disabling v7. And yes, if you convert your files to v7, you'll need to create a gedcom to import the file back into v6. Re: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
I'm probably the average person, and when I installed Version 7 it did not install over 6, it installed into the middle of it, alphabetically between iSearch and Legacy Home in a folder of its own. So now I have v.7 embedded in v.6. They both still work fine. I'm wondering if I can just pick up the v.7 folder and move it somewhere else if I ever want to get rid of 6. As I recall I chose the installation directory to be Program Files but I got this arrangement instead. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html Ken McGinnis wrote: It's just simpler for the average person.Since v7 converts your family files the only way to keep v6 on your computer and to also have v7 would be you now have to copy family files to new locations. For example you would have to copy family files from C:\Legacy\Data (v6 files) to C:\Legacy7\Data (v7 files). If you have pictures in C:\Legacy\Pictures the v7 files will still work. But, a few months from now when you want to get rid of v6 from your computer because you never user it any longer you will not be able to remove the v6 folder because it still contains the pictures. Of course you can move the pictures, video files, sound files, and other data type items like these over to your v7 folders. But, now that they are moved you now have to go into Options, Customize, Locations tab, and click the view Current List of Multimedia Locations" button and form this screen start changing each of the folders from the old location to the new location. Or, get tricky and do a global Search and Replace on PicturePaths. Most of the user settings will be retained and a normal user of Legacy simply installs it and continues to work on famiy history. They don't have to re-setup everything to their liking. I guess it's just several small things that for probably a lot of people on this list installing to a new folder would be a piece of cake but for many users who are not very famiiar with computers and getting around software I feel it is easier for them to just install right over 6.0 which is where it will default to. I simply recommended users install over 6.0 which from our point of view simplifies tech support calls. The end user only have one copy of Legacy. Legacy was designed to be installed over the previous version and simply work. If you know how to work with files and are pretty good working with Legacy go ahead and install to a separate folder as it's really not that big of deal and you will be able to quickly figure out any small thing that needs to be done. RE: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
I had Legacy v6 installed under "C:\Program Files\Legacy" with just a couple test databases. When I received the Legacy v7 CD, I didn't want to mess anything up, so I installed it in the Legacy recommended default directory "C:\Legacy" and imported my main PAF family file into Legacy v7. >From other lister comments, it appears that I need to open my small v6 family files in v7. At that point they can no longer be accessed by v6. How do I then get rid of Legacy v6 without causing v7 problems? Should I just do a Windows XP Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs" for the v6 directory? Dick Richard M. Fortunately it turned out OK as I see no need now to keep v6 available and a plus was that v7 has kept all the custom settings I had in v6. -- Gene Y. n2kvs Researching Young, Zies, Harer & Cox with Legacy Family Tree http://h1.ripway.com/egptech/ Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
