[LegacyUG] Master Source Type

2008-07-03 Thread Chick Lewis
I am a recent convert from FTM to Legacy and trying to clean-up my sources.
I don't understand how or why to use the Source Type. If I have a
master source of Census 1900 New York and cite the county, page number
etc for details, they why do I need to enter census as the type? It
seems redundant. There are no entries for type in the Legacy sample
file, so apparently Legacy is not using it either.

What is the purpose of the Master Source Type List?

In my own setup, with 25000 people, and a splitter, I
have created types as various years of census, in each
country I have. It is just an extra level to split
categories. You may never need this tool.

[LegacyUG] Master Source Type?

2007-11-26 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Under what circumstances does the Master Source Type print in source
citations? I have made selections from the list for most of my master
sources but don't see that information included in the citations. Is there
an option somewhere that causes the *type* to print or not print? If so, I
haven't been able to find it and don't see a clue in Help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source Type?

2007-11-26 Thread Cathy

Hi Kirsten,

Currently the Master Source Type does very little and isn't
printed. I mostly don't bother to fill it in. It would be helpful if
you could sort your Source List on type but you can't even do that.

If filled in and you then click the Assistant button, you get a
different dialogue depending on the Source type chosen. Perhaps this
will be more extensive in Legacy 7 and I'll begin using the Type
field. Currently I don't find the Assistant sufficiently helpful.

It's not a relevant part of a Source Citation so I wouldn't expect it
ever to print in a Bibliography or Citations list.

However, it would be useful to be able to print out a Source Report
ordered by Type.

2007-11-26 Thread JLB
As I have found the Source Type similarly useless, I add a description
to the Source List Name (Shown in Master Source list) for easier sorting
of categories. Now, if I could just remember what I listed under
which! A way to search Sources would be very useful, especially as more
and more accumulate. If you'd like to see a more visual representation
of this method:

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source Type?

2007-11-26 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I've never looked for it. I put the type in my source
name somewhere, and will not create a report of
(example) all people found in any Newspaper, or all
the people in a vital record. When I use this tool, I
find everyone on any census. I have not found a real
use for this sort. The problem is that the list will
not be subdivided by any meaningful split. I prefer to
create a clump of sources from the master Source list,
tagging only those I need. I have been thinking on
splitting the Census/Tax list by date/place, eg:
CensusUSA1930, CensusUK1841, CensusSWE1900 but have
not started yet. Maybe next year?
Hope this helps. What are you hoping to create. It may
be available differently?
