GREAT! And it does include more census than 1880!!

NOW - has anyone come up with the Customized Search String needed to
use the "Search Internet for Current Person" option?

[LegacyUG] New Family Search

2007-11-15 Thread Arlene
Can some one tell me how Legacy is going to work with the New Family Search
that is being Beta tested now? I am unclear about what this NFS will do - and
I really love Legacy - SO I am hoping they will be compatable and I will not
have to go back to PAF (which I do NOT like at all).

Thanks,
Arlene

Keith:

Try this search string (remember, no spaces):

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=1;toYear=[DeathYear];searchType=standard;year=[BirthYear];surname=[SurName];givenName=[GivenNames]

Use default Data Prep field:
[ ]=[%20]

Re: [LegacyUG] New Family Search

2008-12-18 Thread GeoSci
Eliz,
This is a bit involved - but

Very handy little feature - In Family View - highlight a person you
want to research - click INTERNET - Search Internet for current person
- now select the website you want to search (from the choices) and
click SEARCH.

What I was asking was for a customized search string -- and Leon
came through!! You can click Customized Searches (lower right) and
SELECT one of the searches that you want to REPLACE... On the next
screen - click ADD - Give your new site a name - and enter the
"customized Search String" - then click SAVE. Finally click SELECT
and it will now show as a choice for the Internet Search.

Leon's search string works quite well for the site!!

We can’t really say too much yet, but we can say that we are developing
Legacy to be compatible with it.

Can some one tell me how Legacy is going to work with the New Family Search
that is being Beta tested now?  I am unclear about what this NFS will do -
and I really love Legacy - SO I am hoping they will be compatable and I will
not have to go back to PAF (which I do NOT like at all).

Thanks,
Arlene

Re: [LegacyUG] New Family Search

2007-11-15 Thread Junk Man
I don't have any official information.

I do know that technology staff from all the major makers of software for
genealogy were invited very early in the process to see where the new Family
Search was going.

I do know that the church is going to provide/has provided a developers kit
that will enable interaction with the new Family Search.

The design philosophy of the Church is to provide a very fast, stable
platform for storing and sharing genealogical data and that the feature rich
user access will be left to third party developers. The church will provide
a basic user interface for searching, retrieving, entering, and managing the
data collected in the new Family Search.

The Church will also provide a fault tolerant, high performance repository
for the new Family Search (a server farm in SLC that is mirrored in
Virginia) with awe inspiring record insertion, replication and index updates
(I have seen that part).

Second guessing third party developers is always a risky thing but I would
imagine that a future version of personal family history software will act
as a replica of your family information on a local disk. When you attach to
the internet, it will resync with the data in the Church repository. It will
allow you to link with sites like Flickr and other websites for photos,
event and biographical information.

The new Family Search will be as "open source" as privacy and liability will
allow.

RE: [LegacyUG] New Family Search Access

2008-05-26 Thread Sherry/Support
Richard,

*Please* no HTML and especially no graphics in your messages to the LUG
list.

http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Etiquette.asp

Please only send messages in plain text format, because:

1. HTML format messages require more server space for archiving than plain
text messages.
2. HTML messages can hide viruses.
3. HTML messages will increase a message's Spam rating by Spam blocking
software.
4. It takes longer for persons with dial-up connections to download HTML
messages.
5. Some older e-mail readers display HTML messages by including hypertext
code, which makes them hard to read.
6. Some people with visual impairment may have difficulty reading messages
with colored text or tinted backgrounds.

In answer to your questions - yes, the IGI Search feature is still in Legacy
v7 and yes, we hope to have Legacy v7 compatible with the New Family Search
by the time the roll-out is complete.

Thanks for using Legacy,

Sherry

Legacy Deluxe v 6.0.0.190 (latest) allows a search of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) IGI database. Of interest to LDS people is
the baptism, endowment, and sealing dates and temple names.

Question: Will Legacy v 7 continue that lookup ability?

The LDS Church is planning a release of a new searchable database known as
the "New Family Search (NFS)". It is my understanding that the original IGI
will be merged into, or added to, the NFS database.

Question: Will Legacy v 7, now or in the future, interface to that new
family search database?

Is this your first posting on the LUG? Or have you noticed that all
messages arrives in plain text? Not because you're the only person on
the planet with artistic sensibilities, just because that's the way it
needs to be. Also, you must be living under a rock if you're asking if
Legacy is interfacing with the new Family Search.

I have access to nFS but was not a beta tester for Legacy (which is now my
personal software of choice). I am a tester for Family Insight (works with
PAF) as I also work with a lot of PAF users.

I defended you once but this post is intolerable in its nasty and
vicious tone. It is especially egregious considering that Sherry has
already taken care of this individuals posting. One would hope that
you are just having a bad day but I fear that is just a pipe dream.

Gary, Being one of the stakes that are priv to to the nFS, I'm sure you
have come accross to Legacy Users. And as Sherry has said, Legacy if
completely in line with the new system, and compatible. Like I said
erlier, I was a tester, and used Legacy Data, and it ran just fine
through all the test's we were asked to do.
