Re: [LegacyUG] PICTURE coding

2009-03-04 Thread Mary Searles

I've just started putting my pics in the Legacy picture file. For me it is
simpler - for my sometimes addled brain - to have all the pics in one
location. So I am beginning each pic name with an abreviated (3- or
4-letter) family surname and finishing off the name with a pertinent
description.

Re: [LegacyUG] PICTURE coding

2009-03-04 Thread gcr...@juno.com
For what's worth I keep all my photos (individuals, tombstones) in one folder
with the file name identified as SURNAME,Given,ID. All my ID information is
based on the RIN assigned by Legacy. So no matter, what it is, where it is on
my HD the format of the file name is always in this format. In addition I
include some kind of notation of contents as well i.e. marr cert; obit; etc.
Then, by doing a SEARCH for Files/Folders from Windows using () the RIN
number, I can find ANY reference to that RIN no matter where it is even if I
forgot what folder I put it in.

Re: [LegacyUG] PICTURE coding

2009-03-04 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES

I had subdivided my photo file back in Windows 3.1 for PAF 2.1 (1988?), because
Windows didn't 'like' more than 256 files in a subdirectory (my belief, at the
time) so when I bought Legacy it was already in place. That was when file names
could be only 8 characters (or less) so I came up with a coding system for file
names.
What will happen is that if you keep the 'name' the same but the 'tree'
location changed, the program will go look for all the 'moved ones' and ask you
if this the correct one. It will be 'intelligent' and say that photo used to be
in C:/Legacy and is now moved to C:/Legacy/Jernberg, do the 'other ones' need
to be moved to the same place. Because of this only move one clump of pictures
at a time, or it will move all the 'lost ones', one at a time, but why set it
up to need to rethink as it happens.
Good luck, Rich in LA CA

I think you will. Legacy has no way of knowing which of your pictures
went to another location. If you were simply moving the whole folder to
a new location Legacy could help you. Individual pics, I don't think so.

But it might help you somewhat if you use the Picture Center. The ones
that become unlinked when you move them will not have + signs next to them.

Re: [LegacyUG] PICTURE coding

2009-03-03 Thread Bruce Jones
My understanding (and it seems to work for me) is that I need to link
just ONE of the pictures in the new subfolder. Legacy then knows that
this subfolder holds at least one linked picture. It adds this path
to the search order and it will then be able to find all the other
pictures in that subfolder (as long as the filename has not changed).
So it is really quite easy.
