[LegacyUG] To be a Lumper or a Splitter
Hi Everyone, All this discussion has inspired me to take a look at my own sources - not such a pretty site. Up until now I have be a lumper eg one master source for New South Wales Birth certificates with each certificate being given it's own File Id and details given in the source detail window. The benefit for being a lumper is less master sources. Benefits to being a splitter would be easier to see who is attached to each master source. What would others recommend? [LegacyUG] To be a Lumper or a Splitter
Thank you to everyone for your discussions on the above topic. I have found out a lot and it is wonderful that Legacy is so flexible that it can meet everyone's needs although we may do things differently. I am basicly a lumper but split sources when I feel that it is necessary. I have been busy reading and watching the information on sourcing on the Legacy website, also checked out what other genealogy websites had to say on the matter. I will soon start sorting out my sources so that they are better organised and are more uniform in the way I enter the information. The Eccles Family wrote The benefit for being a lumper is less master sources. Benefits to being a splitter would be easier to see who is attached to each master source. What would others recommend? *Definitely* the former. Duplicating information is very bad database practise. It is wasteful of resources, makes opportunity for more errors, requires more input time and makes correcting/amending a much more complicated task. -- Jenny M Benson Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Anne, I am a lumper, and furthermore my master source is the place where I got the information from, eg. Ancestry, Free BMD, findmypast etc. I have absolutely no intention of changing either. I use the source detail to give all other relevant information. Re: [LegacyUG] To be a Lumper or a Splitter
Sorry, my fingers went too fast and I sent the previous email prematurely. Again It is a personal choice. I also tend toward being a lumper; however, if you are not sure which way YOU want to go, be aware (as I learned from experience) that it is MUCH easier to go from splitting to lumping than to go from lumping to splitting. So, if you are not sure, I would advise taking a course somewhere in the middle until you are sure which way YOU want to go. If you decide you want to be a lumper, you can very easily combine multiple master sources into one master source. Dividing one master source into multiple master sources is pretty much a person by person task. Anne Eccles commented: Benefits to being a splitter would be easier to see who is attached to each master source. You can get a "source citation" report showing records attached to a master source, and it can also show the specific fields using the source. Re: [LegacyUG] To be a Lumper or a Splitter
I'm a dedicated splitter. This way, you don't need Reports to see who's attached to what, just Master Source List > "View List" Anytime I try "lumping" I create a mess - admittedly my own fault through poor eyesight, wrong keystrokes and over-enthusiastic use of the Source clipboard . -- Regards Mary Young, Edinburgh Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] To be a Lumper or a Splitter
On Lumping vs Splitting -- sorry I'm way behind on my Legacy email -- I may do both. One thing I am DEFINITELY a splitter on is using GenForum--I list (e.g.) Doe Family Genforum #216 Doe Family Genforum #341 Doe Family Genforum #562 That way I can easily & quickly see whether I have already used and incoporated info from that particular posting (and the individuals to whom I have added the data). And it's NOT especially time-consuming to do that in the first place -- if I'm going to add a new post, say Doe Family Genforum #442, I'll just highlight #341, click Edit, enter changes as needed, click Save and when I am asked whether I want to change the Master Source or Save to a new source, I choose the latter. I can't imagine entering all the author, title, and publication info into the "Detail"--wouldn't I have to enter it all over again rather than just make changes in existing info that is already on the screen?? And how would I find whether I'd already used that particular posting? I handle censuses much the same way.
