Re: [LegacyUG] Vista and V 7 and new computer - any helpful comments please ?

2008-08-15 Thread MJMethod
Zero problems with L7 and Vista. And Vista itself is fine, very stable
(unlike a couple years ago when it debuted). And the "Vista replacement" (it is

being referred to as "Windows 7") won't be available until at least 2010 and
probably much later.

Re: V7: Just follow the download/installation directions. Key thing is to
NOT install it in the Program Files directory. They recommend the C drive, but
I put it in my "User" directory.

RE: [LegacyUG] Vista and V 7 and new computer - any helpful comments please ?

2008-08-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Valerie,

Like you, recently I have had to make the same decision. I first had a look at
what I really needed which was to run OpenOffice.org databases in which I store
details from parish registers and a light copy of my genealogy files for
reference only. Speed was not terribly important but I needed a reasonable long
battery life and I would encourage you to look at this aspect. The operating
system was not a high priority.

Whilst I can run OOo on Linux, for various reasons I decided not to go this
route which left XP and Vista (or a Mac). Because my needs were fairly straight
forward I opted for Vista Home Basic as I did not need the bells and whistles
of the Home Premium and have not regretted this. So far it has been completely
problem free.

I cannot comment on the use of Legacy V7 with Vista as I opted for another
program with a much lower memory overhead, copying my DB across using a Gedcom.
Legacy will, of course, continue to be my program for doing all the work on the
DB using my PC, and I will not be updating my DB on the laptop.

I battled Vista for over a year. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I
found a computer with XP installed and I am happy, happy, happy. That
said, Legacy (v.6 and v.7) worked just fine.

I've had Vista for over a year with no problems. Legacy 7 Deluxe was
added a few months ago and it's wonderful. The only problem I am
encountering is operator error.

Vista is fine with Legacy 7.
I have not had any problems since the release of version 7.

Vista is great - I would not go back to XP.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525, Intel Core 2 Duo with Windows Vista last
week. Installed Legacy V7.0.0.55 as soon as I got it, and have had
absolutely no problems with it yet.

I haven't had a chance to do all that much, granted, but so far, what I have
done, has gone off without a hitch.

Vista takes a bit of getting used to, but so far I'm loving everything about
it, especially where Legacy is concerned.

RE: [LegacyUG] Vista and V 7 and new computer - any helpful comments please ?

2008-08-14 Thread Kate Redford
I have a note book with Vista for 9 months and a desktop with Vista for 3
months. Legacy 7 works very well in my desktop. I haven't installed Legacy
7 on my notebook yet. I use both IE 7 and Firefox with my Vista and Legacy
7. I wouldn't go back for anything. I am on the computer 4-5 hrs per day
working in Legacy and no problems except when I misstep as an operator. The
mapping, the digital pictures, the digital documents, the add in of Word
documents, all work well.

For installation, I recommend you follow exactly like the developers had
posted to our LUG group. I downloaded the files; upgraded to Deluxe; did
not try to outsmart the default instructions. I did not try to save Legacy
vs 6. Not only did it work, but I converted my old (minor) family data
basis of about (6) files; moved my backups for 1 1/2 years to the backup
file and no problems.

Good Luck.

What I've last heard about Vista is that it's being tossed in favor of
their next operating system they're already working on, so I wouldn't
bother rushing into something that may be completely gone soon.
