Re: [LegacyUG] half siblings do not show in all family views or charts

2009-09-21 Thread Ron Ferguson

I have dumped Hotmail so all is OK now.

The other point I was making (see also my reply to Alan Jones) was the need
to link the kids to the marriage, as you would do for any child of the
marriage, as well as just the biological parent. The set the relationship to
the other parent as step/adopted/foster etc.

Hi Ron=2C

I'm also with you on this with messed up families and I believe I
have a similar problem. I have a person who married 3 times and all
his descende=

nts

share his paternal name but on charts there is always a part of his
descendents that is omitted. I don't have the siblings tagged as half
siblings. Is that my problem?

If I want a complete chart I have to resort to merging 2-3 charts
using T=

Draw to create a single chart that show's them all.

Your posting problems continue. Looks like an equal sign (=) at the end of

Very odd!

2009-09-18 Thread Branko and Chris
Hi Ron,

I'm also with you on this with messed up families and I believe I have a
similar problem. I have a person who married 3 times and all his descendents
share his paternal name but on charts there is always a part of his
descendents that is omitted. I don't have the siblings tagged as half
siblings. Is that my problem?

If I want a complete chart I have to resort to merging 2-3 charts using Tree
Draw to create a single chart that show's them all.

Thena,

I do hate complicated messed up families, I have some myself, so you have my
sympathies!

Thank you for the table it is so much easier to see what is going on when
set down like that rather than in words.

Following this table I constructed the family, with, perhaps, one
difference: I actually named the unknown partners "First Unknown" and
"Second Unknown", mainly so that I could identify the two separate unknown
fathers.

I then unlinked all the marriages using the *mother* as the base person in
every case. I am not saying it won't work using the father just that I
didn't and it may be different. After all the unlinking you will see that
the mother still has 3 (now) "unknown" partners as the kids are still
linked, *Delete* (not unlink) these "marriage links".

Now I reconstructed the families in *the order in which they were created* -
as per your table - noting whether the families were not married and/or
didn't have children as I went along. I also added the appropriate child as
I went along.

This resulted in families with all the 1/2 kids intact. Then I deleted the
"First Unknown" and the result was exactly as you described. On adding the
name "First Unknown" then for *all* families the 1/2 kids were correct. This
also applies, as one would expect to the "Second Unknown"

Finally, I deleted the given name "First" just leaving the surname as
"Unknown" for the first unknown and all families were still correct.
Similarly for the "Second Unknown"

I can understand why this happens and I am not certain it is a bug, but it
does seem that where there are two unknown partners then both of them must
specifically have a name - even both are the same eg. "Unknown".

I hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] half siblings do not show in all family views

2009-09-16 Thread Heather Stovold
Only if the bug bothers you. I was just letting the original poster know
that it was not just an anomaly of their database, but that it exists
elsewhere. I see no reason why I can't have 2 unknown "fathers" (auto
created) associated with the mother and kids as that was the situation. I
have seen no other problems show up with these families - and for me it is a
minor annoyance that I would rather have then to create actual records for
the fathers. That was a decision I made when I first noticed the problem,
and I chose not to make the records for the unknown fathers.
As a programmer (not of Legacy), I can even see how this bug would likely
have occurred in code - or in the logic used to create the list of 1/2 kids.
- It is a problem that does not bother me. I let support know about it but
it isn't a high priority to me.

Just wanted to let the poster know that they are not alone in seeing it.

But thanks Ron, for going to the effort of recreating it and coming up with
the work around.

Heather,

Please see my response to the OP. When there are more than one unknown fathers
it is necessary to specifically use the name "Unknown" (or anything else) for
*both* unknowns.

Re: [LegacyUG] half siblings do not show in all family views

2009-09-16 Thread Heather Stovold
I have seen this happen in my file too - and I am 95% sure I reported it,
but I might not have. (And when I say reported it - I mean to support.)
I have a woman who had some kids illigit - and I don't know the father.
Then she married and had a few more. (just to make it more complicated, he
was married before and had kids before too but that doesn't affect
this.) He died, and then a number of years later, she had another child -
and the only place a father is mentioned, it is the long-deceased
husband so it appears that he was illigit too.

I don't use people named unknown - I just let the program put in unknown.

So I have the first children linked to mom, with an auto-generated unknown
father.
Then the next children linked to her and her husband
The last child linked to mom, with a different auto-generated unknown
father.

When viewing the family with the mom and either of the unknown fathers, the
children of the other unknown father are not shown. They all show up
correctly when viewing the family of the mom and her husband.

As I only have this situation once in my own files, and it is a family I am
working with a lot, I just remember the little bug. To me it is more of an
annoyance than anything, as I find the show 1/2 kids as a huge bonus I had
never expected or had in any other program i have used.

These people were entered a LONG time ago, so I don't remember the order I
used to enter them or link them - but I'm not sure that matters.

As I suggested, should you wish you can leave both of the unknown fathers with

2009-09-13 Thread Thena Jones
Hi Ron,

Both of your messages came through. Oddly enough, mine also took several
hours before it appeared.

I followed your steps; and as you said, it made all the children appear
correctly in all family views.

Looks like this is one time when we have to add spouses with fake names
instead of adding the mother to the children (without adding a father to
each child).

I thought, for a few minutes, that deleting the first name FIRST from First
Unknown made him and his child disappear. Wrong. I was also experimenting
with setting both Mr. Unknowns to Private, and I accidentally set that
marriage to private instead of the person. So, of course, he and the child
disappeared. I cleared the checkmark and they were back.

Thanks for working through this.

[LegacyUG] half siblings do not show in all family views

2009-09-12 Thread Thena Jones
Hello,

Not all of the half-siblings appear in children's lists of the mother's 5
Family Views. I have selected to "show 1/2 kids." This is a complicated
family and I hope I am clear about this.

(I am using version 7.0.0.109, on Windows Vista.)

The mother had three children, all different fathers. She was married twice
(no children), and had children from 3 relationships. I have the name of one
of those fathers. Originally I did not have the children assigned to correct
fathers; I had assigned them to the two husbands.

When I found more information on their parentage, I fixed the family like
this:

I unlinked all children. I added another husband (the known relationship),
and edited the marriage to show they were not married. Now I had 3 named
males, linked as spouses/relationships to the mother. So far so good.

Then I added back the children, in order of birth. For the 1st and 3rd
children, I selected that child and added the mother only (link to existing
person). For the second child, I used the family view that showed his mother
and father, and added the son (link to existing person).

When I bring up the mother's Spouse list and select either of the entries
for "unknown", one of the children - one of the 2 daughters - disappears
from the children list.

1. Husband1 - no children family view shows all 3 children
2. unknown - child 1family view shows his child, and
child 2
3. Husband2 - no children family view shows all 3 children
4. named relationship - child 2 family view shows all 3 children
5. unknown - child 3family view shows his child, and
child 2

I have gone into each "marriage" and checked "had no children" (for the
spouses) and "this couple did not marry" (for the relationships). This
didn't make any difference in which children show for the unknowns.

I ran file maintenance - check/repair.

If I click on one of the "disappearing" children (1 or 3) so she is in the
female box, and then view her siblings, I should see

this person
1/2 brother
1/2 sister

Instead, the 1/2 sister does not have the "1/2" before her name. However, if
I deselect "show half brothers and sisters" then both siblings disappear (as
they should.)

How can I get the missing 1/2 sibling to show when the family view includes
one of the unknown relationships?

Re: [LegacyUG] half siblings

2008-09-01 Thread Dawn Crowley
It is something that can be turned off and on, so perhaps it was an
option set long ago in v 6. I generally leave show 1/2 kids on because
most of my families with 1/2 siblings were raised together. That makes
it easier for me to catch all of the children when searching census
records, etc. However, sometimes the children were adults when a new
marriage made them 1/2 siblings. Those I don't need to see in one
family when doing research.

Wayne,

If you download and install the latest build of Legacy v6, you shouldn't
have any problems with running Legacy under Vista. Do be sure to install
to

the default c:\Legacy folder as Vista has a quirk of not liking programs to
write to the program folder under Program Files unless you're running as
administrator.

There's a *steep* learning curve with Vista. Lots of changes and
challenges.

  Lesley,

Right click on one of the children in the Children's List and select View >
  1/2 kids.

Build 6.0.0.127 fixed the three problems Legacy has with Vista. We won't be
doing any updates for Legacy v5 to run properly under Vista. Here are some
  workarounds:

  1. The help files won't work unless you go to the Microsoft website and
download the WinHlp32.exe file. Go to
  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607/en-us where you'll find information
about this problem and links to download the WinHlp32.exe file.

There are two options to download:

  Windows6.0-KB917607-x64.msu For 64-bit Vista
  Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu For 32-bit Vista

  2. You won't be able to update the Deluxe edition from within Legacy. You
can find out if there's an update available, but you'll have to go to our
  website at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion5.asp to
download new updates. However, they're very rare with Legacy v5. You'll
get an update only if the database schema changes and we need to make the
Family Files in v5 compatible with the Family Files in v6 again.

  3. You'll need to do one of two things:
  A. If you have multiple users of Legacy on your computer, when you
switch users, you will need to go to Options > Customize > Locations and
click on the "Reset" button by "Location of Temporary Files" OR
  B. With Windows Explorer, go to the Legacy folder on your hard
drive and create a new Temp sub-folder. Right click on the Legacy folder,
select New > Folder and then name the new folder "Temp". Then go to Options

Subject: [LegacyUG] Half siblings not showing - Legacy 5/Windows Vista

  Hello,

No matter what I do I cannot get my program to show half siblings as before
(eg. William has two children by his first marriage and 4 by his second
marriage and I would like to see all the children on my screen at the same
  time).

I was able to do this in my old computer but I now have Windows Vista and am
using the Deluxe version of Legacy 5. Because I am using Windows Vista the
help file does not work anymore.

  Any help would be appreciated.

> Customize > Locations and set the path to c:\Legacy\Temp. This will
create a new folder that won't require resetting every time you change
users.

Make sure that you install Legacy to the default c:\Legacy folder and not
into the Programs folder.

Lesley,

You do not say how you are trying to do it. The standard method is to
right click on the kids then on the pop-up go to View>Show 1/2 Kids. Is
that what you are using?
