I think the most important thing about backups is to make sure that they are not all kept on the one computer. A hard drive may fail, or a computer stolen or lost somehow, such as fire. I keep backups on other computer and on a USB stick. Also giving copies to other family members is a great way to ensure the files are not destroyed. Also, if possible keep track of what information you have entered and then if you need to use a backup you know what you need to enter again. No reason why you would *have* to lose new work since then. Restore the old database to a different name. But I'll have one for each day going back a longer period of time.
