RE: [LegacyUG] BACK UPS

2009-02-21 Thread MKO
I think the most important thing about backups is to make sure that they are
not all kept on the one computer.

A hard drive may fail, or a computer stolen or lost somehow, such as fire.

I keep backups on other computer and on a USB stick.

Also giving copies to other family members is a great way to ensure the
files are not destroyed.

Also, if possible keep track of what information you have entered and then
if you need to use a backup you know what you need to enter again.

You're right, of course. With some effort, it's do-able.

I keep mine over a longer range of time, just in case I find critical
errors in the database later. If I make several backups in one day, at
the end of the day I just keep one of them. But I'll have one for each
day going back a longer period of time. This sorts of helps but not
really, because if I suddenly find out that things started going awry a
month ago and I want to revert that far back I lose any new work since
then. I haven't spent much time in Legacy 7 though. Now, there's a
method!

I think the "3-generation" system is sufficient for most people's needs.
This means that each time you create a third backup of a file, you
delete the first backup

For example:

On Monday you backup and call the backup "Monday."
On Tuesday you backup and call the backup "Tuesday."
On Wednesday you backup and call the backup "Wednesday" and you delete
"Monday."
On Thursday you backup and call the backup "Thursday" and you delete
"Tuesday."

etc.
