Me, too. I have the LUG set for Plain text only even though I disagree with
the policy. So, if my email had an ad in it, it was because I was replying
to some previous message. It wouldn't have originated with me.

Thanks for the help, but everything the article recommended, I already had
set. So, I wouldn't know why the attachment was still sent unless I replied
to an HTML message or something and didn't think to make sure it went Plain
text. But, either way, I have LUG set for Plain Text only and have for

Phil,

It's not a virus but a problem with the way the email was sent in the
first place. It only occurs with senders who use Outlook and who have
their Outlook set in certain ways.

The sort answer is that winmail.dat contains formatting information. My
guess is that you aren't using Outlook and therefore the formatting
options came in what is probably an unreadable winmail.dat file for you.

And my thoughts on HTML . . . . . . I use html myself on
everything but this list. I like and use the dark colors and also
use LARGE fonts so everyone can read it. But then most of the
people I write to need the large fonts.

But all that said -- if the list manager says plain text then I
will send in plain text. I also have my Outlook Express e-mail

Just like the vast majority of us have embraced the change from black
white TV to colour TV and then to flat screen TV, from LP's to 8
track to cassette to CD, from film to Beta to VHS to DVD, from film
to digital photo, from mail by post to email, etc ... I believe we
should simply embrace the change from plain text to rich text and
 HTML.

DEFINITELY NOT! Too many scams and other nasties around masquerading
as seemingly innocuous emails. Plain text is easier on old eyes as well!

When CQ Quimet sent his message on the above topic it came with an
attachement WINMAIL.DAT So did Paul Abel's response.
I understand attachements are not allowed Are they sent in error or are
they

viruses?
I haven't opened them amd will delete both posts as well as the
attachements

If the above people were not aware of the attachement then may I suggest a
virus check of their machines Regards Phil
