Re: [LegacyUG] Kudos to Geoff!

2008-04-11 Thread Kevin McMillan
Geoff,

I sent an email query to footnote.com's support asking the current
printing version of the pdf file for Evidence Explained and was told
that they thought it was the 2007 first printing. So for now that is
not a way of getting an updated copy.

I didn't buy the hardcopy version. The PDF version seemed the easiest to
use. I really don't want to buy another full version. I'm now thinking
that I shouldn't have purchased it.

P.S. This is interesting - my email made it into my inbox 15 minutes after

Mary,

I don't really know how to answer this. Yes, there were lots of errors that
she has now corrected. 885 pages is a really big book. Those errors really
couldn't have been caught by proofreaders unless they were involved in
"computerizing" the templates like we were. My understanding is that there
wasn't a comprehensive "list" kept by the publishers to let us all know
which pages were edited. Maybe the cheapest way of "updating" the first
printings would be to purchase the .pdf version of the book from
Footnote.com if they still sell it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Kudos to Geoff!

2008-04-10 Thread Gary Templeman
However, I suspect any converter use would be optional, so without doing
something intentionally the answer to the question is that upgrading to v.7
will do nothing to "affect the zillions of sources...already entered". As
far as I know, previously entered sources can otherwise be left exactly as
the person formatted them originally.

It is my understanding they are writing a converter to transform old
sources into the new sources format. It probably will not be perfect,
so there will be some input required by the user. You can always
leave your old sources as is and not do anything with them is another
option. I think it will be worth converting all of our old sourcing
to the new format.

Let's hope the converter will be perfect and convert all of our old
source.

Geoff presented an overview of Legacy 7 at our genealogy users group
this month at Sun City Grand and the sourcing templates looked
wonderful. They have integrated sourcing using a Wizard for inputs.
As I understand, they have all the sourcing templates for everything
in E. Mills latest book, Evidence Explained. It is also my
understanding that there were over a 100 problems in that book that
Geoff had uncovered and worked with E Mills to get clarification on.
This has also led to some of the delays with Legacy 7.

I think everyone will be greatly impressed with the new sourcing
capabilies in terms of both input and output formats. You basically
enter the fundamental source data in templates and the Wizard writes
the output sourcing based on the examples in E. Mills book. You don't
have to worry about the formating of the output -- it comes as part of
the system. There are also ways you can go back and edit the source
if you so desire. I think everyone will find this part of Legacy to
be well work whatever the cost of the new version will be.

Geoff also showed a nicely integrated mapping system as part of Legacy
7. For locations in your database, one can zoom into the street level
to see a cemetery location. There is also the capability to view the
maps in 3D and do similar things like is in Google Earth. Cities are
shown with buildings in 3D. You will need a high speed Internet
connection for best performance of this mapping system.

Of course, everyone now is aware of the new Legacy 7 Charting
capabilites -- it is available now as a Beta for testing until June
15th. Be sure to try it, you will like it.

be well work whatever the cost of the new version will be.

RE: [LegacyUG] Kudos to Geoff!

2008-04-09 Thread Janis Gilmore
Gail,

I saw that on the APG list, as well, and felt a rush of confidence. I have
always preferred the look and feel of Legacy to TMG (which I used for
several years.) Legacy's aesthetic is better. If Ms. Mills is crediting
Geoff so generously, I feel euphorically hopeful about what this new version
will be like.

Hi everyone, I couldn't help but copy this message from Elizabeth Shown
Mills to the APG (Associated Professional Genealogists) list last night. It
sounds like her latest book, _Evidence Explained_ (EE for short), had some
great input and influence from Legacy's own Geoff Rasmussen!

I have renewed confidence that the new sourcing capabilities will be exactly
what the customers need: something easy to use for beginners and something
with as much sophistication as needed by professionals and other serious
genealogists.

Thanks Legacy for taking the time needed to ensure v7 will be something
truly wonderful. I can't wait to take another serious look at my sources
with a new eye!

>BRAVA Elizabeth.

Thanks, Kathy--and Betty, for posting the GPC announcement. One sentence in
that announcement is important--or at least the last four words of this
snippet from the sentence:

>Mrs. Mills' 2007 publication, the distillation of years of her own and her
colleagues' research experience

EE would not have been possible without the contributions of *many* from
this list--many who shared their resources, many others who pushed me
outside my comfort zone to learn new materials I did not daily use, and
others who helped with more technical aspects. In addition to all those
mentioned in the acknowledgments, I should add one more--Geoff Rasmussen of
Legacy--who, post-publication, combed the volume with a fresh and
wonderfully critical eye, finding passages to polish before the new printing
went to press last month. No work is ever perfect, but thanks to Geoff's
meticulous effort, the new printing should be--in the words of the late,
great genealogist, Ge Lee Corley Hendrix, CG, FASG--"more better" :).

Thanks, *everybody.*

Elizabeth
