RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Gedcom preparation ? ?

2008-01-23 Thread ronald ferguson

As I'm not registered for Rootsweb Newsletter I haven't seen this but I would
be interested to know where/how a Gedom comes into loading pictures into World
Connect. BTW Gedom Standards have nothing to do with Legacy other than the fact
that they use it.

 How about adding some photographs?

Follow these quick steps and you'll soon have your relatives' photos

What are the plans for Legacy to provide an option to help in preparing the
gedcom that will be uploaded to WorldConnect ? ?

2008-01-23 Thread Roger Lewis

I would bet no plans.

Legacy already has a facility for the export of gedcoms that can be uploaded
to WorldConnect. However, the gedcom spec, which is beyond Legacy's control,
concerns itself only with data, not images.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Gedcom preparation ? ?

2008-01-23 Thread ronald ferguson

Since I last replied, Mark Lang kindly sent me the article from Rootsweb.

It seems to me that no changes to Legacy are necessary, although I do have a
couple of points. Firstly, the picture must already be on a web server for
Rootsweb to access it and the full URL (ie. commencing http://; ) placed in
any of the Notes in Legacy. So WorldConnect visits that site, picks up the
picture and places it in your Notes.

Secondly the article states that the URL should be enclosed in the html tags
and . For use in placing an URL in its own web pages Legacy uses « and
» ie. Alt+174 and Alt+175 but these brackets and their contents are ignored
in exporting to Gedom 5.5. If one compiles Legacy web pages and also
WorldConnect it would mean having both URLs in the Notes which would not look
particularly good on the Legacy web pages, or changing the brackets depending
on how it is to be used - UGH! if there are a lot.

2008-01-23 Thread J B Coats

Thanks Ron for the comments.

UGH! is correct. It seems like too much to handle for WorldConnectTree
and the gedcom feature. A couple pictures maybe, but not for a large
volume.

I do also use the Freepages for the same file created by using Legacy Web
Pages creating feature. Pictures are displayed there OK and automatically
included

Thanks all, will stick to the simple gedcom for WorldConnectTree and
separately the Legacy Web Pages routine for other site postings.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy gedcom Preparation ? and HTML feature at WorldConnectTree

2008-01-23 Thread Susan Daily
JB,
Legacy can't do this automatically. First off, you need to upload your
photos to the internet. Legacy won't know where those files are
located or what they are named.

So even though you don't want to, you would have to take each of those
individuals for whom you have photographs and load their picture
online, then copy the URL that picture is at, and paste it into the
HTML shown in step 3 of your email. So, more work than simply
uploading a Legacy-generated GEDCOM.

It was great to see you mentioned this, though, as I was going to
forward it to Jim Terry for him to highlight the feature on his Legacy
news. I think I am going to try it with some of my one-name study
Cullivans.

Ron mentioned about not receiving the RootsWeb newsletter, so I have copied

 question to the group.

Roger mentioned about the Legacy gedcom feature. It works great and I use
 it on regular basis.

It appears that there may be a way that Legacy could add the html info to
the general notes. The info being taken from the Attached Pictures
details. Would hate to have to enter the line for each individual having a
 picture.

HTML is not really my thing. With much help from this group, I have
several sites posted on the web.

 Thanks for listening _J_B_
