Re: [LegacyUG] Netbook choices

2009-01-25 Thread Mary Muir
I have run the asus 900 (with the 16 GB hard drive) and Legacy worked
well. Where I work, we have 9 of the Asus, so far we have had 3 with
problems (one had a problem with the keyboard stopped working, the
other was the touchpad buttons, the last was the memory (hard drive)
had many bad sectors). In the first two cases, Asus replaced the
faulty parts, in the last they replaced the entire unit so I have to
say their customer service was excellent.

Re: [LegacyUG] Netbook choices

2009-01-25 Thread Allison Nelson
Never heard the term netbook before, but assume you are just talking about
the tiny notebook computers that have hit mainstream lately. I guess I was
lucky to be ahead of the pack. I think it was late 2002 when I got one of
the Sony Vaio PCG-TR2APs, with an overall size of about 11"x8" and weight
about 3 lbs. Back then it was cream of the crop with an 40 Gb hard drive, a
built in camera (which immediately quit working), and something new -
bluetooth! I absolutely loved it because it was so light and I could slip
it into a handbag and take it literally anywhere. It was perfect for
researching because it was easy to carry, light weight with minimal extra
"junk" required, and its safer when you are out and about, cause no one
knows I am carrying a laptop. Batteries lasted about 10 hours.

Unfortunately after several years of hard daily use at work and at home, the
motherboard died and two years ago I had to make a decision. I replaced it
with the closest thing a Sony Viao TX751P and it's even better! I have had
NO problems with these computers, other than those caused by heavy use (I
have several keys worn right out on my keyboard so its gotta go in for
service soon). This one has 80 Gb hard drive, is only 11" x6"x1" and
weighs only 2.64 lbs with an LCD display that I can see just as well as my
20" monitor on my desktop. I use the high capacity battery and get 10 hours
out of it daily. I simply plug it in when I come home from work and its
ready to go the next day. At work I run with both a desktop and the laptop
on all the time and go back and forth between the two.

The Sony Vaio's are very expensive, but for me they have been tough,
reliable little work horses. I will take a look at the competition when
this one dies, but from what I have seen in stores, the screens are no where
near the quality of the LCD screen in the Vaio. I do a lot of very detailed
photographic work so display quality is important. Keyboard size is not an
issue as the keys are actually about same size, just arranged a tiny bit
closer together, with numbers across top only and you get used to it very
fast.

Bottom line...I will never go back to a big clunker of a laptop. I would
not bother with the cam unless you are into talking to other people while
you are on the internet. Quality is just not good enough and too awkward to
use it for taking pics of anything other than yourself sitting in front of
computer.

I run Legacy on an Eee 701 with 7" screen and it works fine for me, though I
would recommend a bigger screen, I got mine when the Eee was just launched :)

I have used Legacy Family Tree on my desktop computer for several years, but I
am new to this mailing list.  I am planning a genealogy research trip and am
thinking of getting a netbook to hold Legacy 7 and my genealogy files.  I see
that most of the netbooks have similar processor and memory (1 GB), but there
is a big difference in hard drives.  For example, Dell has 8 or 16 GB solid
state drive, Asus has 120 GB hard drive and Acer has 160 GB.

Does anyone have experience and recommendations on what works best or should be
avoided?  Will Legacy 7 run on the 16 GB solid state drive?

The Asus and Acer models seem to come with built in webcam.  Is this a problem
if you go to a courthouse or library that does not allow cameras?

Hi Sue,

I recently acquired an Asus 900HA that has a 160gb harddrive, 1gb of memory,
Windows XP and I love it. So far Legacy 7 is running great on it. This model
has a 9" screen but Asus also has one that has a 10" screen. If you go to the
youtube web site, you can find video reviews on these models as well as many
others including the Acer, HP and the Mini9 Dell.

Re: [LegacyUG] Netbook choices

2009-01-25 Thread John Roose
Sue -

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire, 160 GB memory, running Win XP and with
the 6 hr battery. Works like a dream, especially compared to my very heavy
Toshiba laptop. I've had it for about 2 months and been to historical
libraries and court houses - no problems. Of course, I didn't have problems
with my laptop which also had a camera. Didn't use it then, don't now.

I got the Acer especially for Legacy and its portability. I highly recommend
a netbook and am very pleased with the Acer.

Replies to the list please, I am also interested in this one and I suspect
many others will be also.
I am looking for one that will hold Legacy and allow me to email while away
from home, so it needs to have the capacity for my address book as well.

Thanks
