Hi to the List:
We in the Washington State area have been using New.familysearch for a year.
We have been putting names and preparing names in Family search, but the
opportunity inagreate Legacy and newfamily search and like wise newfamily
search in to your own database which one you use Paf, Ancestral quest and of
course Legacy. My line goes back to 1500 and would like to work out more
details with out typing, I am a family history consultant and have been
working in the family library for 6 years.

Thanks for all the info

Clarification: The LDS Church has announced that newFS will be freely
available to everyone after all members have access.

newFS is being made available first to members of the LDS Church, in
a gradual rollout. All temple districts worldwide have it now except,
I believe, most of Utah and Idaho. Researchers there are eager, of
course.

Why a gradual rollout? To work out the bugs, I suppose, and be sure
the hardware will support the new users as they come online. Imagine
the chaos if it had been done all at once. (Millions of users crashed
the original FamilySearch when it went online in 1999.)

In the meantime, training is being offered on using the website.
Merging and combining of records is going to be a fine accomplishment
-- if it is done carefully.

I'm not a member of the LDS Church. I appreciate the generous way the
church shares their genealogical resources; that's the reason I am a
longtime volunteer in Family History Centers.

Chap, I didn't know about the search string within Legacy; thanks for
mentioning that.

You can access the Pilot.familysearch.org site and create a search string

Leon:

We were told last summer in a conference at Brigham Young University that
ultimately non-members will have access.

Last I heard the New Family Search team was still working on the big stumbling
block that has kept Utah and a few other places from being able to use it yet.
That is so many users having the same couples on their tree.  At one hundred it
reaches critical mass and slows the entire system down.  Also as far as I
know they are still working on the system; as they allowed more and more
areas to participate, they came up with more questions to resolve and bugs to
work out.

Re: [LegacyUG] New family search.org

2009-03-09 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES

You are accurate (kind of), but LDS is opening access to the link at a 'safe'
pace, which means adding more hardware, etc., as available. In the testing
phase, non-church members were invited to join in the project, (I declined) but
the plan, had an open by regions 'flavor' to it. I watch the various e-mails
and blogs, so hope to hear when available. I use the 'old' link in my 'Internet
connections', and have noticed there seems to be more data. I do not know if I
am in it already (?) Not worried.

If you go to the New family search web site you will get an explanation as
to what is going on. First it is only going to be available to LDS church
members. Later it will be released to the rest of the world as I take it
from what I have heard and seen in press release.
