Re: RE: [LegacyUG] Organizing your Research
The Legacy MRIN filing plan is the best that I have seen, but it seems to be somewhat costly. I found small tabs made by Avery at the local Staples stationers in Bangor. The product is #11404. There are 12 small tabs, and software is available to run through your computer to print the numbers on the labels for the tabs. Depending upon the size of the font used numbers can reach up to four digits. Each set costs about $8.00 My sincere thanks to Millenia for the Legacy Family Tree, and this great filing system. Re: RE: [LegacyUG] Organizing your Research
This looks like a great system, but I think I will stick with a system I have used for over 20 years because it helps me visualize where each family fits in my pedigree. I have folders in both hard copy and digital format to hold documents and artifacts related to each individual family. I use the ahnentafelnumber associated withmy pedigree and the same thing for my husband's pedigree. Since all even numbers arefathers and odd numbers are mothers, and each direct ancestor doubles the generation before it, it is easy to follow the connection. Siblings are handled using lower case letters (i.e. 12 a, 12b, 6, 12d). Note that mother's go under their husband's folder. Digitally, the folders are also filed according to surname. Each file has a table of contents and there are index files with hyperlinks. In the hard copy file drawers, the file label also includes the name and range of years of the husband along with the ahnentafel number. i.e. The mainLentz folder contains all my husband's surname folders: Lentz/L1,L2, L4, L8, L16, L32, L64, L128,..., Wiest/ L6, L12, L24, L48, L96, Riegle/L10,L20, L40, L80, Jury/L14, L28, L54, L108, ... The main Hacking folder contains all my surname folders: Hacking/H1, H2, H4, H8, H16, H32, H64, H128, ... Small/H6, H12, H24, H48, H96, H192, ... Wilcox/H10, H20, H40, H80, H160, H320, ... Other organization systems are described at http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/organization/index.html. If you've already got a system that works well for you, I would stick with it. If you have a system that you'd like to share with others via Legacy News, send me an email. I finally decided upon the system outlined by Geoff Rasmussen on the Legacy Site and am in the process of setting it up. With over 1000 MRINs in my database (and growing) the prenumbered sets on the market would be a costly option. I am using plain old cardstock and Avery index tabs with computer printable inserts. The tabs are labeled 16221 S-101 1 clear. There are 25 self-adhesive tabs to a package. I ordered 25 packages and the cost was $44.75 - this would make the unit price $1.79. I cut them and the inserts in half (there are now 1250 labels) and hand number them. You can also print them on the computer. I was only able to find this specific label on the Office Depot website, but there may be other sources in your area. My process is obviously more labor-intensive and the end-product not as professional looking as it would be with the prenumbered dividers, but it works for me. I have been using this system for about 9 years, many years before it came onto the market. I have been using hanging files instead of the notebooks for the MRINs and regular files for the unmarried children placed inside their parents MRIN. I also use colored files, one for each of my four lines. I didn't know then I was tend setting way before my time.
