I believe the dash indicates Mac. As for Spaces, I am chicken, I find my McNeills frequently as Mc Neill which I think is a bureaucrats way of doing it. Paula: _Getting It Right_ by Mary H. Slawson recommends leaving a space. Because I post my database at RootsWeb though, I use the version with no space as an alternate name. Otherwise RootsWeb searches for McDowell won't find Mc Dowell. That's likely to re-start the "not a true aka" discussion, but it's the way I do it. Well, as someone with a Maiden Name that starts with Mc - here is my rant. (ignore if you like.) I personally always hated it when someone put a space in my name. Drove me crazy! I also hated it if people got the capitalization wrong. Even if someone was doing all-caps, I would do that c little and I hated it when people had it in caps. (Hey, in typing class (back in the old days of typewriters...) - in timed tests - I would take the time to roll the paper to superscript the c) So - I would personally say - never, never, never put a space in. I don't think that people with a name with a Mc tend to put a space in when they use it. Mary & Ron: It looks like I have some work to do. Our local genealogical group (Summit County, Ohio, USA) has put together an Excel spreadsheet of all known veterans buried in Summit County cemeteries. I took on the task of keeping it up-to-date and going through all of the entries make sure that there was consistency. One big question in my mind were the names with Mc. I decided, silly me, that if the name, as recorded, had a capital letter after the Mc that I would separate the Mc but if the letter was a small letter I would not (i.e., Mc Donald or Mcdonald). From what you are saying, there should be no space no matter whether capital or not. By the way, there are 63, 800+ names listed presently; not all with Mc in them obviously. There are one British Army veteran and four Canadian Armed Forces veterans along with veterans from Italy and Russia. Howland, It should be easy enough for you to change, using Search>Search and Replace. Search for "Mc Donald" and replace with "McDonald" - I guess that you may have to do something similar for MacDonald as well btw. Use the settings to ensure the criteria is exactly as you wish eg. I think it will have to be case sensitive and you will have to use "Exact". Of course, there will be other Mc's besides McDonalds. So maybe you want to search and replace "Mc " with "Mc" and "Mac " with "Mac". (But I'd want to check that process one by one probably.)

I seem to remember from English classes (back in the dark ages) that the way a person spells their name and pronounces their name is the is the correct way to spell and pronounce that individual's name. Using a space after Mc will, of course, affect the way the name sorts. Other than sorting, would it cause a problem? No matter how many there are there is only one Master Surname entry for each spelling. So there in only one entry to be changed. The problems with leaving some with a space and others without a space are probably no different than the multitudes of European surnames that were "Americanized" during the late 1800s and early 1900s. For example, many HANSENS were changed by the children to HANSON. In such cases, the parents get sorted apart from the children. Not really much of a problem to deal with other than to remember to look in two different places when searching for someone. A worst case scenario would exist where an individual spelled it one way during his early years but then changed during his adult years. I tend to leave the spelling of the surnames just as the individual would have spelled it. Its not nice to fool mother nature. Ron; If you are wanting to change all of the "Mc " with "Mc---", would it not be simpler to do a search for "Mc " and replace with "Mc"? That's how I did it a couple of years ago and it had no problem searching for the space. WOW! I just learned another neat Legacy trick. Thanks Dave. I have several different spellings of Vanderberg (Vanderborg. Vandenburg etc) that I would like to sort under one spelling to make it easier to find duplicates etc. I realize that names should be entered as spelled, but with so many variations it is difficult to keep track of them all. I thought about using the AKA feature so they would be included in the index, but Dave's method appears to be easier. I also realize that some sort of note would have to be included so the original spelling is not lost. How do some of you handle this? Would appreciate some opinions... Chick: I know there are purists who have their own rules about surname spellings (as baptized or per the earliest record, etc.), but that way lies database insanity. Most early records were written by church or military officials or census enumerators anyway, and I don't see anything sacred about their spelling so where there are wide variations I use my own "standard" version as the preferred. My source citations always quote text exactly as shown so the original spelling is preserved. And if many co-researchers use a different spelling for a certain individual then I add that as an aka so it will be found in database searches. I have one surname with over 120 variations--and don't even get me started on Acadian or French Canadian records! IMO a standardized spelling for variable surnames is the only way to maintain an orderly database. Holand, As someone with a Mc surname, I obviously have thoughts on this. I always write my name McGlone, but my dad often writes his as Mc Glone, and just as often McGlone (my grandfather was registered on his baptismal cert as Maglone, but that's another matter)! There's no definitive standard that I'm aware of, and I believe it really depends on the individual. Just one other thing to be aware of, though. There are many Irish names (which is what I'm mostly concerned with) which can be spelt in any of 3 ways, e.g, McGuire, Mc Guire and Maguire are all different ways of writing the same name. Someone who has a surname with Mc at the beginning could often write it either way, but would rarely write it as Maguire, and vice versa. One other thing, which is probably unrelated, relates to alphabetisation. In the Irish phone book (and this is usually the same in other aspects of Irish life) all "Mc"/"Mac"/"Mc " surnames are treated as if they are spelt Mac, and are placed between Mab and Mad in alphabetical order.
