Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcoms in Family Tree Maker

2006-07-29 Thread E.Rodier
Which version of FTM? Legacy 6 may need custom import setting to get the
correct note spacing if "let Legacy decide" default does not work. Legacy
users often make many changes before looking at the note spacing after a
GEDCOM import -- could be a broken word in each line of notes.

Legacy 6 was never updated to recognize the note spacing (splitting in the
middle of words) of FTM 2006 released August 2005. It should be okay with
FTM 2005 but I didn't check today.

If the original database involved other transfers or merges, watch for
run-together words, short lines and duplicated notes.

Client may expect your version of the family history to include FTM-style
box charts. Charts will be different if locations are edited the "Legacy
way" and a GEDCOM sent back to FTM. Long locations in Legacy include place
holder commas. -- Elizabeth

RE: [LegacyUG] Gedcoms in Family Tree Maker

2006-07-29 Thread Jan Buker
They do not have one unless it was user created. User's can create any
"fact" field they like in FTM. One large problem with FTM is when they went
from one edition to another (don't remember which on) they changed Facts to
Comments so there are holdovers from that, in some cases you have both. In
Legacy they are called "events".

Hi all. I'm so grateful for all your input. I have one question that
came up when I tried transferring my Reunion files to Legacy. I don't
know if FTM has this so maybe some of you can tell me. I know that
Legacy has fields for religion and bar and bas mitzvahs, but they
don't have a field for Religious name, which Reunion does. In addition
to their regular names, most American Jews have Hebrew names. I now
know that I have to identify this tag for Legacy when I do the import.
My question: does FTM have a field for religious name and will I have
to watch out for this?

RE: [LegacyUG] Gedcoms in Family Tree Maker

2006-07-28 Thread Jan Buker
There is a problem with the FTM PLAC tag. When you convert the file to
Legacy you need to let it know if it is a place or a description. FTM
allows both in the same field. Ex. St. Mark's Church, Anytown, Any Co. Any
state. That is a description and place but it is all listed as a place in
FTM. If the file is not a large one then I would go ahead and accept
Legacy's offer of placing them in the master locations and then editing it
from there, otherwise you can check them one at a time and decide if you
want this in descriptions or if you want them in locations.

Legacy also may have a problem with user created events but that is fairly
simple to fix by creating the event in Legacy as well.

Jan
P.S. Just got through with this.

Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcoms in Family Tree Maker

2006-07-28 Thread Judy
I recently imported a rather large FTM gedcom into Legacy and haven't had
too many problems, of which I am aware.

There is an option, and I don't recall right now what it is, but FTM fields
with data, that don't seem to fit into a corresponding Legacy field, can be
imported into the General Notes field for each individual.

About the only thing that I "lost" was my extensive research journal, but
Legacy is so far and above FTM, it doesn't matter. I can do back to FTM and
look at the journal if I need to.

This is probably a question for Support. I think FTM has a tag in Gedcom
that does not import well into Legacy.

 Cathy,
I have just recently downloaded a GEDCOM from FTM and had no problems.
The import worked beautifully.
