Hi Rich, I haven't been following this closely - but why use Privacy brackets around the Not? If you use Privacy brackets and then omit Private data, you are conveying the opposite of what you know as it reports as Westmorland, England. Richard, My email had a chunk omitted as presumably it was considered to be be html somewhere along the line! It should have said that for instances where it is only known where a person didn't live, I enter, eg. "Not Westmorland, England" using single angle brackets instead of the quote marks. The angle brackets making them stand out and sorting them all together. I had rather hoped that putting them in quotes might have avoided this - no such luck! Kathy, This is difficult. We have this position with the English 1846 census in that for the place of residence it only gives information as to whether the place of birth was within the county in which the person resided at that date ("Y"), out of county ("N"), Ireland, Scotland, Wales or Foreign. >From this census, all I know about my nth g-grandfather is that he was not >born in Westmorland but presumably in England. Re: [LegacyUG] How to record Gravestone information
Kathy, I have a MacKay stone in Armadale Scotland that shows the name, birth, and death of an ancestor. However, I do know that he died in South Africa and it was a custom to engrave stones with names in honor of family members who died overseas. So the body may in fact not be there, but the stone is still a good secondary source since South Africa is not replying to me. LOL I have placed it as a source in Legacy for his date of death, with a note in my research tab about the situation. Mike: Not necessarily... I have an ancestor listed on a stone complete with dates. The only problem is that the actual burial records say the he wasn't buried there...and all the spots are full! For all I know this guy is still roaming Alaska looking for gold! The inscription is nice but can be meaningless. All I know from oral history is that they found out in the morning that he died and had a real good party that night...and those reports are probably just as accurate as that Memorial inscription... Since many gravestones have information on more than one person thereon, I'd tend to have a master source of Gravestone (or Headstone or Tombstone) and record the information as detail with the photograph attached to the detail. While the gravestone might be a secondary source for info on date of death, etc. I can't see how it can be used a a source for burial. John: I usually put the headstone information as the source, but I also list it in the burial notes, not death notes. If you attach a photo to the burial notes, it will not print in reports. So I also created an event called Headstone which I attach the photo to.
