Hi, Thanks for replying. In the PDF, I was looking at the Allowed vs. Not
Allowed in the Document Restrictions Summary (File -- Document Properties --
Security). It says Filling of Form Fields: Allowed.

I believe you have to have Acrobat
Standard to fill in the form on your
computer screen and save it.  There also might be a
 .pdf form fill program
that is available to fill in .pdf forms.

If you have Acrobat you need to have the typewriter tool

Again, Legacy does NOT create form fields on their pdf documents. IF
they did you would be able to fill them in because that attribute is set
to allow. Since Legacy does not create the form FIELDS there are no
form fields to fill in. To create form fields you can fill in, you need
either the full version of adobe () or a third party add on. Legacy
does not yet provide that ability.

If enough people want it, it might happen but the mail list is not the
place to request it. Send your requests directly to Legacy and if
enough paying customers request it, we may get lucky and get it.

Re: [LegacyUG] PDF Documents

2009-05-27 Thread Ward Walker

Hi wba,

In my post of May 20 I mentioned 2 conditions of the PDF: the presence of
form fields and the enabling of user rights. I neglected a third condition.
When the form is rendered into a PDF, it may be rendered either as an
interactive or printform PDF. The latter is as it suggests, only for
printing. It appears that Legacy, by design or by accident, is rendering the
PDF as a printform and thus no interaction with the form is possible. An
interactive PDF should show a purple bar across the top of the document
(using Reader 8.1.5 anyway), which summarizes the usage rights. It will also
have a blue circle icon in the column along the left side of the document,
which can be used to list all the usage rights. For an example of this, go
to http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf?portlet=3. (In this case,
Reader will be embedded in your browser, but that makes no difference.)

It appears that Legacy is using software called ComponentOne PDF Generator
8.0 and is generating an old version of the PDF standard (1.2 instead of
1.6). It may be that Legacy developers simply need to tweak their use of
this package to cause it to create the interactive version of this form. Or,
it may be that Legacy needs to upgrade to a newer version of ComponentOne
products.

Please file a bug report with Legacy. I suggest that it would technically be
an enhancement request rather than a true defect. It is more convenient to
fill out the form on-line, allowing later edits, than to print it and fill
it out by hand. This enhancement should apply to blank forms, but not to
most other Legacy reports, I would think.

Hope this helps.

  Ward

Any version of Adobe Acrobat, Full or Reader will fill in a PDF form
that has FORM FIELDS inserted. Legacy does not generate FORM FIELDS in
their pdf documents. If you really need this function you can download
Open Office, re-create the form from scratch (you only have to do this
once) and export it as a fillable form with FORM FIELDS. There are
numerous tutorials and help sites available to help with this project.
(Hint; GOOGLE) This is, at this point, totally off topic and should be
dropped.

Re: [LegacyUG] PDF Documents

2009-05-20 Thread Ward Walker
As Gene pointed out, the free Adobe Reader has the capability to allow users
to fill in form fields, as long as (a) the form designer created such fields
in the form; and (b) the form designer enabled the appropriate user rights
when rendering the form into a PDF. (An example of this is the U.S. IRS tax
forms.) Likewise, the free Adobe Reader has support for applying various
comments and annotations to a form, again, as long as the form had been
given the appropriate user rights when first created. (However, I don't
personally see a need for annotations, per se, in this case.)

So, there is no need to seek other free PDF products or the full Adobe
Acrobat product. Rather, and to bring this back to being on-topic for the
LUG, I believe that the OP should log a bug report with Legacy to re-design
this particular form to correct these design deficiencies. There is no
logical reason for denying rights for a form such as this one, which is
meant to be filled out after rendering.

wba,

I understand PDF-XChange (Freeware) will let you annotate pdf files.

Hello!

I have a question about PDF Documents.

Reports -- Books/Other -- Blank Charts -- Research Log.
Legacy has the feature to create a blank Research Log in PDF.

My problem: Rather than print it and fill in the information by hand, I
want to do it on the computer. However, it will not allow me to fill in
the fields even though the Security Settings indicates that filling in
form fields is allowed.

Thanks for your help.

Did anyone generate the form other than the original sender and try to fill
in the form?

I have the full acrobat product and have no trouble filling in the form.

Apparently the PDF that Legacy generates does not have any form fields
on it (even though it resembles a form).

I use PDF Xchange viewer, free version. It fills in all of the Legacy forms
with

no problems. Just have to save them as a PDF file first, then open with the
viewer.
