Re: [LegacyUG] RTFM usage

2007-03-06 Thread Randolph Clark

Sometimes it's a matter of attitude. Attitudes in general today are
so rude that one assumes the worst. Sherry's attempt to explain the
acronym included a word which, while not vulgar per se, struck some of
us as out of character and therefore somewhat shocking.

Hi David,

I'm responding only to you. I, for one, do not appreciate the use of words
such as "f" There are so many wonderful, descriptive words in the
English language that are also meaningful. The use of such "gutter"
language does nothing to improve the meaning mostly because of the frequency
of its use. In other words, read the manual says as much as read the "f..."
manual. The additional word does nothing to improve the meaning. But this
is my opinion. Others on this list, however, may also share my opinion--and
some likely share yours. Please do not assume everyone thinks it is
"polite" language.

Thanks for letting me share with you.

Re: [LegacyUG] RTFM usage

2007-03-06 Thread Ruth Nerud
Oh for goodness sake - you know exactly what was meant by RTFM - don't
sugar-coat it (sorry diabetics!) - the person meant the F word and you know
it. I also agree the original intent of the letter F was Friendly. This poor
person was just trying so hard to get help for something he couldn't figure
out on his own - and the response was RTFM - and I don't mean F = Friendly.
I hope the persons that were so unkind need help some day - and I hope
someone reminds them to RTFM.

2007-03-05 Thread Dawn Crowley
Personally, I find that Microsoft has trained me not to look at "help"
or "manuals" for answers because: 1) responses are irrelevant, 2) I
can't tell if they are relevant because the answers are in computer
instead of English, 3) it provides 320 options to reveiw for a possible
answer, et cetera. However, I find Legacy's various helps (help,
manual, hovering, reading the screen, DVDs, and this list) to be very
useful 99% of the time.

Hi everyone,

Not meaning to BADH (meaning, "beat a dead horse"), in reality "RTFM" is
common and polite, and is used by many folks in the field of Technical
