Re: [LegacyUG] Repository Question

2007-08-28 Thread Tracy Skegg
Reproductions of publications can be messy, even in library
cataloguing, Library of Congress uses the original publication details
as publisher, cataloguing rules say use the publisher who reproduced
it. The advice that I keep seeing of being consistent is very
practical. I've got no particular pet sourcing style, I just go for
what I can reasonably find at the time and unfortunately with Internet
sourcing, it may never be found again by others.

I do a lot of research at National Library of Australia and National
Archives of Australia, I copy what I can reasonably and legally
manage, and end up with many things at home. I still try to show as
the major repository, where I obtained the original information.
Internet based sources I print out where possible, and add to my
source any URLs and when I sighted them. I am about to start
gathering BDMs from Tasmania, so I really appreciated seeing so many
tips on this topic and on validation.
Cheers
Tracy

Re: [LegacyUG] Repository Question

An interesting new wrinkle on repositories. I recently
extracted from GoogleBooks pages from the 1883
"Transactions of the Medical Association of the State
of Alabama" which was filmed from that source in the
Library of the City of New York. I got all the credits
reported but it certainly doesn't look pretty.

Pictures of the actual document really improve the quality of your work. It

RE: [LegacyUG] Repository Question

2007-08-23 Thread William Anderson
Dave,

I have done so and included the text in the detail record as well as the .jpg
file (as well as storing back-ups of the files off-site).

However, since I would not necessarily 'accept' a .jpg of a document as 'true',
I still think it worth showing the repository as the place where I would go to
view/get an extract of the original record.

But your point is well made.

Re: [LegacyUG] Repository Question

2007-08-23 Thread Nancy Bender

I have a similar process to Jenny and Ron.
Usually my repository is where I sent for the copy of the birth, etc.
record. I check verified if I
have a copy and the file ID is my filing number so I can locate my copy. I
also transcribe or summarize the document in the source details so I can
refer to it without going to my copy unless I need to.

Nancy

I agree with Ron. I would use the Office from which exact copies of the
originals you hold could be obtained by other people (if I used the
Repository field, which I don't usually, naughty me!) and I would indicate
that I held a copy of these documents by including their location in my
filing system in the File ID field - in Source Details in my case.

RE: [LegacyUG] Repository Question

2007-08-23 Thread William Anderson
Ron,

Ms Mills won't be making any money from me either!; I'm in agreement with you
there - so long as I am consistent and my methods are understandable to others.

It merely struck me that I could 'lose' all my hard-copy material, so it would
be better, for those following after, to record the repository from whence it
can be got. I know that repository could change in the future, but at least
there is a starting point.

My own decision - but others might wish to consider (and possibly reject) my
thought process. I'm not intending it to be prescriptive - after all what do I
know!

Bill,

Not necessarily, many of my documents are copies rather than extracts.

If *you* are happy with your sourcing then why change? I carry no torches in
these types of discussions and as far as I am concerned anything that is
accurate is valid. I have little time for prescriptive formats (so you won't
find me buying Mills :-) ).

Subject: [LegacyUG] Repository Question
Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2007 20:18:16 -0500

I've been using Legacy for almost a year now, and am trying to get a
little more particular and more complete with my sourcing. I have a
question about what to use for the repositories. What is the accepted
way to enter the repository when you have the original document in
your posession, and it's also available at a county clerk's office,
for example? I'm thinking specifically of my own marriage license,
birth certificate, adoption papers..those types of records.

Thank you for any suggestions.
