RE: [LegacyUG] WinZip and how to Restore

2009-02-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Keith one needs a separate program to unzip and file the picture back-up.
Whether Windows own program will do this I don't know as I have always used a
separate program, which co-incidentally is what the Help Files recommend.

I do not believe you NEED WINZIP - anything since XP has a built-in
UNZIPPER program. Second - you do NOT need to UNZIP to RESTORE.
The RESTORE a BACKUP - open LEGACY - Choose File - RESTORE. It will
tell you it must stop LEGACY - that is OK. Choose the BACKUP FILE you
want (if from your flash drive - choose that one) - and let the file
rebuild (takes very little time). That should get you back into
 things.

The Multimedia BACKUP - I must leave to someone else - I just back-up
the LEGACY FOLDERS for DOCS and PICTURES. If I must restore them - I
just replace the ones in the LEGACY FOLDER with the back-ups.

 Hope this helps...

Keith is correct in that you do not *need* a third party program for zipping
and unzipping, and that includes for the picture backup. It may be that that
section of the help was never revised after Microsoft added basic zip
functionality to XP (and Vista). (For info on the built-in Windows zipping,
see http://www.logicaltips.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=594 ) I also have used
WinZip, 7-Zip, Izarc and ZipGenius in the past. The latter three are free
and do not nag you about updates as WinZip does. The 3rd party programs add
additional features that Windows does not have but none of them are
*necessary* if you are running XP or later.

I was just please when I did not need to download WinZip with my XP
machine a few years back. I had used it since DOS 3.1 times... or
somewhere back there in ancient history! :-)
