RE: [LegacyUG] Credibility analysis of evidence

2010-02-27 Thread Nick Ingham
Hi Carol

To be honest, I have no idea no what the programming ramifications would be.
From my limited knowledge of computing, presumably a related table in the
database which, as I suggested, would link to the name, event, circumstance or
whatever rather than the source.  But maybe this is not possible and, unless
anyone has any other ideas, I suspect that the bottom line is for me to use
either the event's notes field or the relevant individual's research notes for
what I had in mind.

  Thanks Kirsten.  A
  good point.

  There is of course no
substitute for looking at the source itself and, to that extent, I completely
agree that our primary focus must be to provide comprehensive source citations
so that anyone reading our research can find that source.

  Nevertheless (and I
think this point is made by Geoff in one of the Legacy training videos), even
though we may not be researching professionally, our goal is surely to
assemble, and perhaps share with others, a reconstructed family history that
is as close to the truth as possible.    With this in mind, I
take your point that any research analysis exercise carries the danger of
being subjective.    Indeed, in reply to my original query, Jenny
made the point that Verified might mean different things to
different people, and I suspect the same can be said when it comes to
assigning a “Surety Level” value to each citation of a source.
Because of this,  I don’t tend to use either of those features myself.

  One of Elizabeth Shown
Mills’ most important points – if I have understood her teachings correctly –
is the need for an objective, standardised means by which all researchers,
regardless of their experience, can record the quality of the information
they record in their software program.     I am not a
programmer, but it seems to me that a ‘pop up screen’ with 3 checkbox choices
each time we enter a piece of information from a source would do the trick:-

  Is
the data’s source an Original or a Derivative?
Was the information provided by a Primary of Secondary
  informant?
Does the information represent Direct or Indirect evidence
of the date, name, place, event or circumstance in question?

  This would need to be
attached to the individual piece of data, not the source.

I assume I am correct in
thinking that, for the moment at least, any such analysis has to be entered
into the individual’s ‘Research Notes’ screen?    But it would
be marvellous if there is a way in which Legacy’s already comprehensive
reporting features could be extended to the type of objective data analysis
recommended by ESM i.e. if there is any means of incorporating the 3
questions somehow.   Just a thought if anyone might have any other
  ideas?

  Nick

Also keep in mind that _Evidence Explained_ was written for a fairly broad
audience including professional genealogists and history writers.  Some
aspects of the book could be considered overkill for the family history
researcher working at a hobbyist level while a professional genealogist, for
example, is under an obligation to include an evaluation of the evidence for
his/her clients.  Further, your analysis may often be subjective and

As a newbie, I've not played with the surety, but this thread got me
interested enough to check it out, and see how it could be used to do what
is desired here. With a range of 0-4 only, it seems too limited to be made
to fit. Having the ability to use your own numbers system could be better.
But I've an idea, it's a general coding trick, and could apply to ratings
systems in general.

Decide how many digits your ratings system needs, for example we'll say
three digits each for your three questions to represent 0 to 100%. (Note, 3
digits may be too many 0-9 may be a fine system). So i = 999, ii =999, and
iii = 999. You can string these together, with a space between or not (its
up to you), to make a nine digit number, call it the Evidence Explained
Surety Number (EESN = 999 999 999). If you can follow that, then perhaps
you could keep a small summary in your Source Detail comments box like so:

m. 025 025 025
b. 075 050 060
d. 100 099 002
etc.

Commence with dart throwing

Try tagging the results of the search list generated by searching for
individuals whose burial place contains Oklahoma. Then go to Individual Report
and choose the individuals you just tagged as the record selection. Check
the first box under the Include tab that says Addr for birth, chr.,
death, bur., marr. and include any other information that you want.

This will produce a list of all the individuals whose burial place contains
Oklahoma. If the burial addresses have been entered, they will be printed
too. Persons buried in Oklahoma whose burial addresses have not been
entered will also be printed. Each individual's information will be on a
separate page. I don't know if it is possible to combine these reports in such
a way to reduce paper usage.

Hi Thomas,

What is the prefered way to enter two people who live together and
have children, but are not married?
Is there a way to enter such a relationship beyond of marriage?
With the children getting the last name of the mother?

In the Marriage Information you can tick the box This couple did not
marry.

Also in the Marriage Information, you can select a Status to reflect a
term of your preference - for my partner/other half/not-quite-husband
(who I have not married but lived with for 21 years now) and myself,
I've got Common Law selected. I can't remember if that was already
there or if I added it. You can add any term you like.

Further down in the Marriage Information window, you can alter the
wording on reports if you don't like how it appears.

Surnames can be over-ridden, so for those children who took the mother's
surname just type in the name they are known/registered as. If they are
known by both surnames, you can add the other as an AKA.

Hope this helps. :-)

 Jerry,

Yes but make sure that you have backed up your .fdb file first, particular
since it involves a change in file structure, so you cannot go back. You
would be able to restore your V5 .fdb back up to a new V5 installation
 though.

 Ron Ferguson

Thanks, Ron. Is the .fdb file the one that's backed up when I do a
regular backup? I'm basically wanting to create a PDF file to send to a
relative in Denmark. If version 5 will do that, then there'd be no need
to convert to version 7. I want to make this as easy and foolproof as
possible without losing data!

Tom,

It is a known bug. For webpages it can be removed using any text editor
which allows batch search/replace and for reports save as an RTF and amend
in WORD, OpenOffice.org, or other wordprocessing software with search and

2010-02-27 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Tom:

I had this problem a year or so ago. As I recall, it happened when I added one
person and a marriage date before entering the spouse's name. This triggered
the someone in the software. Adding the spouse's name then didn't replace
the someone but only added the name with the result you're seeing. I
eventually cleared it--probably by deleting and re-entering the spouse and
marriage date. There is a thread on the problem in the pre-Nov 2009 archives
with a subject line of Margaret Married Someone. Fortunately it only happens
occasionally and apparently only under fairly unusual circumstances.
