Every time I have tried to join the email list for LEGACY (the email
list and the news list), it always says "FILE NOT FOUND" when I try to
click on the link. Are you having problems with your server still?

Could you please add me on?

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Upgrading to latest build?

2010-03-15 Thread Ron Ferguson
Scott,

Welcome!

In Legacy, under the HOME tab, on the righthand side you will see a box
which will tell you if there is an update, if so just click and it will
update your program

For information, downloading and installing the full program will also be
fine as only the latest files will be installed. Neither method will affect
your data, *but* in common with updates of any program do ensure your
back-up is up to date - just in case!

By the way, As a new user you are probably not aware that all posts should
be in Plain Text and not HTML (Rich Text). Oh, and the Legacy rules etc. for
using this site should be deleted when replying to posts. These rules are
intended in part to keep the size down for the many users who are on metered
dial-up.

I see some discussion about 7.4.0.19. When I check my version, I'm on

in the program, nor did I see any update download, other than the full

Thanks in advance...

I'm not sure what you mean by "this," but the link you posted (Family Search
Pilot, or sometimes called Family Search Labs) involves actual records (e.g.,
indexes and digital images of original records like Ohio Death Certificates and
Argentina census records, both of which I've had the need to use, believe it or
not).  In other words, it is #5 on Heather Stovold's explanation earlier today
of the various FamilySearch collections.  You do not have to be an LDS member
to use this site.

The only portion of FamilySearch one needs to be an LDS member to use is
NewFamilySearch (#4 on Heather's list).  Legacy 7.4 has been built to be
compliant with NewFamilySearch (along with correcting things that are important
to all of us, not just LDS members).

If for some reason you did not receive Heather's message, you can read it in the

Michael,

The new.FamilySearch has been in beta for a few years. There are all
sorts of rumors when it will be available. I am on the test team and it
is on .99 which means it is getting closer for release (Closer is
relative). Having said that, it will probably (My assumption) only be
available to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
To be released to the general public, is up to the General Authorities
of the Church. I don't think even the software developers know when the
project will be done, for it is constantly evolving. So my guess is
*shrug* :-)

Sherry,

I had also added some columns in the 7.4.0.9 configuration which I believe
were deleted when I installed the update. I added one back in and tried
clicking the Default button. Everything changed back to the "squished"
format and the "Age" column disappeared again. It may have had something to
do with when and how I saved the configuration. It's Ok now and comes up
correctly at start-up.

I hope this helps your analysis. Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch versus New Family Search

2010-03-15 Thread Cathy-0
Just to clarify, FamilySearch.org at http://www.familysearch.org is
available to everyone and has always been available to everyone.

The New FamilySearch (nFS) at https://new.familysearch.org is the site
which is currently restricted to Mormon church members only. What do they
have that we don't? Well, Mormon church members used to go to a Family
History Center (FHC) and use a free-standing application called TempleReady
for their church-related genealogy work. This is now being done at nFS.
Since the rest of us don't deal with this, there is no need to us to access
nFS. Will they make the site open to non-members later on? Perhaps. But
only time will tell.

For now, however, go to the (old ?) FamilySearch which is accessible to the
public and use their Library Catalog which has thousands of records
available to anyone by going to a FHC, as well as their Record Search Pilot
project which has been placing records and indices online. The Record
Search Pilot is only in its infancy but it has gotten off to a good start.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering birth years into Legacy

2010-03-15 Thread Don Cook
I too like "Calc" and used it for years but have stopped 'cause it
doesn't have a nice clear universal date qualifier word to print in
narratives.

For example; if I use "Abt" the word "about" (which the whole world
understands) appears with the date in narratives. If I use "Cal" or
"Calc", whatever I enter as the Displayed option is used to prefix the
date in displays as well as reports. This is different than Aft, Abt,
Bet, etc. Why can't we have a nice word like "calculated"?

Now before the community goes ballistic on me (which some are wont to
do), I realize I can enter "calculated" or whatever I want on the
Options menu but then that also shows up on the Family, Pedigree, etc.
displays which is a bit heavy handed and space consuming.

Just go ahead and reset the columns. We have *no* idea why that happens as it
doesn't happen for everyone and I've never seen it happen.

Ron - yes I called them shortcuts on the desktop, thinking that was
what they were called.

Sherry - Good to hear from you, we first 'met' before you went to work
for Millennia. Before asking for advice I tried the "squish" thing as
I read about it on the list. They are not 'squished' they are gone.
When I go to Options - customize columns all that is there are the
default ones. Unless you think otherwise I will do the same as Hugh
did, add them back in and go back to worrying about something like
water being wet.

2010-03-15 Thread Sherry/Support
Yes, that's what setting to Default does. Well, it shouldn't "squish" but it
will reset the columns to show only RIN, Full Name, Sex, Birth, Birth Place,
Death and Death Place. Those are the "default" columns.

Sherry,

I had also added some columns in the 7.4.0.9 configuration which I
believe were deleted when I installed the update. I added one back in
and tried clicking the Default button. Everything changed back to the
"squished" format and the "Age" column disappeared again. It may have
had something to do with when and how I saved the configuration. It's
Ok now and comes up correctly at start-up.

I hope this helps your analysis. Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch

2010-03-15 Thread Heather Stovold
Just wanted to add a bit more information on the LDS records.

1. Ancestral File - as noted below - submitted by researchers - a repository
of family trees. Some are very good, some are totally horrible.

2. IGI - as noted below - from 2 sources - submitted by researchers, and
extracted from records
3. Pedegree Resource File - replaced the Ancestral File (had a few more
features) - and has same limitations on accuracy.

4. New Family Search - THIS IS A BETA. - currently available only to LDS
members (and that has been slowly rolled out to LDS members 1 geographic
region at a time to limit the number of people and the number of problems.)
I believe the hope is for it to become a large linked tree with
collaboration between people, yet people being able to control the
information they have submitted. It is very ambitious, as some of the
ancestral people entered in it will have hundreds or thousands of
descendants working on the information for them. Information that is in it
comes from various sources - including
a. - Each of the 3 sources of records listed above
b. - LDS Church membership records - records/information of living members
is only available to that person (and maybe their very immediate family
members?) - deceased members have the records available to others.
c. - Information submitted/edted currently by people - This would be where
the Legacy linkup would come in... or other genealogy software - or people
can enter stuff directly. Again - take with a grain of salt. Good thing is
that source information is now able to be submitted, so you can check things
easier.
d. - other???

5 - Family Search - PILOT - This includes the Indexing project, where the
millions (billions?) of microfilmed actual records stored by the LDS church
from various government and (other) church records are being computerized.
I always look forward to seeing more here!!!
As said below (I copied it)
a. Transcriptions of actual parish, govt, records - often with a link
to the image of the actual record. Again, the reliability is no different
than that of any other transcribed source.
b. Images scanned from the microfilmed records not yet transcribed or
indexed. These images are the exact same thing you would see if you went to
a church and viewed the actual parish registers. Or to the state or county
office and viewed the actual record.

Note that on the pilot site, there are also some other little projects that
may or may not be developed furthur. This is available to anyone I
think

6. - The millions (billions) of microfilmed actual records - available to be
sent to various Family History Libraries worldwide (for basically shipping
costs) for you to view.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering birth years into Legacy

2010-03-15 Thread Heather Stovold
I use CAL for any date that I have calculated, including from census
information.
I use EST for any date that I am estimating from cultural "norms" (ie, wife
is usually 2 years younger than her husband... or has a first child around
age 21 it is a wild guess with little info - but this estimate has been
VERY useful to me)
I use ABT for any dates that someone else used about, either in a tree, or
in an interview ("oh, uncle sam was born in the 1920's") etc.

[LegacyUG] Move Over Law in NJ

2010-03-15 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
I did not know this until I got an email from a friend!
Dawn Del Guercio, 15 March 2010.

Apparently, there is a law that's been "on the books" since 2009 in NJ
that says you can get pulled over and ticketed (with possible high
fines and points) if you do not either move over a lane or slow down
significantly when you see law enforcement / emergency vehicle on the
side of the road with lights flashing. Why have I never heard of this
law until now?? Seems something that important should be on the TV...

Here is the website with the information:

Before installing the last update, I purposely changed some options to be quite
visible - bold colors, distinctive fonts, unusual columns in the Index tab.

I didn't experience any changes to those options when I updated to the latest
build. A few users report this on occasion and we're not sure why it's
happening.

When your Index rows get "squished", just move the mouse pointer to the far
left to one of the lines between the rows until it becomes a double arrow. Left
click and drag to the size you want it. All rows will resize to the same
height.

Ann,

Yes, the same thing happened to my Index screen. The columns were all
squeezed and returned to their default configuration. It only took a
couple of minutes to re-configure back to my preferences. It appears
that when the up-grade was loaded it was set to configure Legacy's

Re: [LegacyUG] Census Information was Entering birth years into Legacy

2010-03-15 Thread Ila East
As an indexer for FamilySearch I can attest to the difficulty of getting
names, etc. correct when indexing. Some of it is guess work because the
handwriting is almost unreadable or the photocopy is almost unreadable.
When the names are of ethnic origin, if you aren't familiar with that
culture, its like transcribing code. When searching for individuals in
the census, especially in FamilySearch, if you don't find them the first
time think of how the name might have been misinterpreted and try again.

You either have to do it manually from within the Notes, or use Access or

If you re-read Sherry's response you'll see she stated that you will
need to go to the NOTES and delete the extra carriage returns. There is
currently no means to do so in Legacy's search and replace.

I know, its tedious but there it is.

Peter,

You have carriage returns at the end of the Notes fields. You'll need to go to

I have found that many of my notes have blank lines. I have looked at a Gedcom

1 CONT Baptisms in Barrow Parish Ch (ref nos) Elizabeth(658), Mary

Is there any way in legacy to remove these extra blank lines?

2010-03-15 Thread Hugh Busey
Ann,

Yes, the same thing happened to my Index screen. The columns were all
squeezed and returned to their default configuration. It only took a
couple of minutes to re-configure back to my preferences. It appears
that when the up-grade was loaded it was set to configure Legacy's
default, not ours.w Not a big deal but it was a bit of a nuisance.

Ann,

Your questions are slightly puzzling, and seem to imply that the update is a
new installation, which may have installed in a different directory to your
existing (old) installation. In other words you may have two installations,
is was in C\Legacy and the new one in C\Progam Files?

I should not delete anything at this stage, although removing the old
Desk-top link and will not harm anything.

[LegacyUG] Legacy update 7.4.0.19 removed index information, also have two shortcut icons

2010-03-15 Thread aparsons
I updated to the latest build and it added another shortcut to the
desktop. The difference is the one added has Legacy 7.4. Would it be
ok to delete the original one?

Also, on the index tab in addition to the default columns I had added:
Father, Mother, Marriage: 1st Spouse Name and deleted Sex column.
After updating, the columns I added are gone, the one I deleted is
back. Is this an indication that the update was not processed
correctly? Has anyone else had this happen? I am very worried about
this as it never happened in earlier updates. I have used Legacy
Deluxe since version 2.

I have Legacy Deluxe on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop Vista Home Premium
and on an Acer Aspire I Windows XP. Both have the same change.

Advice would be greatly appreciated,
