Re: [LegacyUG] Location vs. Address and Lat/Lon side effect(s)

2010-03-22 Thread James Cook
I entered a problem ticket, and received some more info. on this...

Exporting using the "Legacy" format option does include MAP, LATI, and
LONG for places. So, my statement that getting the data back out is
wrong, and I stand corrected.

However, the way they come back out is via some sort of grouping at
the bottom of the file under a Legacy specific custom tag called
_PLAC_DEFN.

Custom tags are of zero value to applications other than Legacy, so
the problem still exists. Not getting the data back or getting the
data back in an unusable form - they're the same as far as this issue
is concerned.

Stan,

As you have probably realised, I totally agree. It worked perfectly until an
update only a few months back, which is when I first raised the matter with
Legacy. I refuse point blank to have possible (known) inaccuracies in my
published data and will not publish work arounds in the form of "?" etc.
which I consider to look very amateurish when used solely to overcome the
inadequacies of a program. They do have the place in reports, but that is
not one of them!

Meanwhile, I will have to continue to jump through hoops to remove them; I
am far from happy that this problem has not yet been rectified.

Hi Leo

Thanks for your reply.

As Ron pointed out there is supposed to be an option to leave the parent's name
blank, but it's not working. I would rather not have to work around this bug,
but to have it fixed and the option working the way it should be.

Hi Stan,

You will likely get lots of different replies to this problem, when I have
unknow parents I use a ? for the given name and also for the surname, a lot of
researchers do not like this, but its what I choose to use.

As there is no immediate fix in the works, you will have to try to come up with
a compromise that will work for you and that you are happy with.

If you have two known brothers, Frank and Robert Smith, but you do not know
their parents names, you are quite safe in deducing that their father's surname
is Smith.

Have you considered entering their father's name as (given name (Mr.) and
surname (Smith); now enter Mr. Smith's wife as give name (Mrs.) and surname
(Smith), without the ( ).

You can also give Mrs. Smith an AKA as Unknown, Unknown or ? ?, at least until
you learn their correct names.

You can play with your own combination until you find a solution that will
satisfy you.

Myself I would not unlink, if you do unlink make sure that you do a backup
first just incase there are siblings that may become disconnected.

[LegacyUG] Step 165 of 164

2010-03-22 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I've never bothered with watching the numbers in the progress bar when one
chooses the routine File Maintenance Check/Repair but this morning I watched
the numbers whizz by. There were to be a total of 164 steps. Gee, imagine my
surprise when it finished and proudly claimed it had completed 165 of 164
steps.

Apparently there are 3 types of programmers working for Millennia: those
that understand fractions and those that don't.

Many thanks Ron. Maybe someone from Legacy could comment on whether this bug is

Stan,

Check that under Customise>Options>Data Format and make sure that you have
"just leave blank" for Word for Blank Records.

Now that is what you should do, but as I've pointed out to Legacy many times
there is a bug and it does not work. It is a pain in the neck and also
affects webpages, so all you can do for reports is to have 3 runs through a
word processor to get rid of all of them, Use search and replace in your WP
to delete " and unknown", then "unknown and " and then ""unknown" do not
use quotes but please note the spaces. Similarly use an html editor for
webpages.

In my view this is an important bug, which ruins reports and webpages, or
causes quite a bit of extra work. Quite unsatisfactory.

Unlinking will not work as you will lose your descendants.

[LegacyUG] Unlinking Unknown Parent(s)

2010-03-22 Thread stan megraw

I have a number of individuals where one or both of the parents are not known.
In the Descendant Report, the text reads "son of Unknown and Unknown". I know I
can correct this by unlinking the child for the unknown parent(s). But I have 2
questions:

1. If I know the father, but not the mother, is it possible to correct "son of
Robert Smith and Unknown" without unlinking the father and then re-linking him?

2. Since I have a number of these, is there a way in Legacy to unlink many at
once?
