RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy User Group reputation

Phil:

It's a shame that anyone should miss out on the benefits of Legacy due to a few
curt remarks on the LUG mailing list. There's a Legacy list at RootsWeb where
the tone is a good deal softer and the rules are less stringent. The traffic
is lighter so it's not as good a learning tool as this list, but questions can
be posted without worrying about a sharp retort and the queries seem to be
answered promptly. That list might be a good option for your wife.

I agree. The welcome given to newcomers is enough to send them immediately

Martinets abound in all list groups. It is best to not acknowledge them as
that merely provokes them and others. Just ignoring them is the best one can
do. When someone's mind is already set, you will not change it, and the
ensuing posts accomplish nothing. If inappropriate or nasty comments are made,
they reflect on the sender. Leave stinky posts alone.

I don't see any replies, so others are probably not experiencing this
problem.

I would try:

o Run Check/Repair on your main .fdb.
o Close/Start Legacy.
o Reboot your PC.
o Close Legacy, delete the .FG file that is associated with your
  .fdb, and restart Legacy.
o Close Legacy, delete the .usr files, and restart Legacy.

After each one, try creating a GEDCOM and see if it fixes the problem.

If I were a betting man I would bet on #4 as the problem. A .FG is a
Focus Group file. Maybe it has become corrupt.

The last one is a "last resort". If you get that far and that doesn't
work, restore the .usr files from the Recycle Bin.

Good luck!

[LegacyUG] Legacy User Group reputation

2010-06-26 Thread Charles Apple
Please, do not stereotype the Legacy User Group, as a whole, based upon a few
loud, boisterous, and arrogant individuals who appear to hold to the perception
that the "civilized world" revolves around their particular definitions.
Unfortunately, they are part of this world and we must accept the good as well
as the bad, however, we can choose to "FOCUS" on the good and ignore the bad.

There are many good people on the Legacy User Group that are willing to share
their expertise with others. These good people do not deserve the reputation
that is fostered by those that think they "walk on water."

Thank you to all Legacy User Group member's whose suggestions, recommendations,
and willingness to share your expertise makes Legacy such a great genealogy
program.

Thank you, Dennis. If I ever get everything sorted out that I have now
goofed up, I will remove the Description field as you recommend as it just
seems to be a problem looking to happen again. One more thing I wish I had

As for where it could be put when transferred to the upper portion, I think
they could put it off to the side under the "+" where the address, notes,

[LegacyUG] Ken - PLEASE do something to stop the HTML email.

2010-06-26 Thread Ron Bernier
Millennia,

Please invest in list mail software that you can choose the option to either
strip the HTML from the email or you can block the email so that it never
reaches your mailing list. I appreciate that you don't want to do anything to
upset your users, but you are upsetting those of us that care about the
corruption/viruses/bugs that can be hiding in HTML mail. You are also
upsetting your user's who connect to the internet with slow speeds or have
older computers.

The Legacy list is the only list that I subscribe to where the list
administrators don't give a darn about the safety of their subscribers. Sherry
can remind people not to send in HTML until she is blue in the face and many of
the subscribers refuse to listen. Either they don't know how to turn off HTML
(they should either seek assistance off list) or they don't care about anyone
but themselves and therefore should be banned from the list.

Please, don't tell us the software you invested in can't block HTML. If that
is the case, then please invest in a package that can strip or block HTML.
This situation has gotten totally out of hand on this list.

That's been that way ever since the Description field was added. It does
this because the main birth field does not have a Description field to
move the Event/Fact's Description to.

I would report it on http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/problems.asp as a
bug. Maybe one of these days the programmers will address the issue
(though I'm not sure what the solution would be).

In the mean time, I would recommend that you don't use the Description
field for any of the Alt. Events that go with the main types of events
(Alt. Birth, Alt. Baptism, Alt. Death, Alt. Burial, Alt. Marriage). You
may even want to go to the Master Event Definition screen and remove
Description from being displayed on each of these Event Types.

No! Read the original non-question. My reply was short and succinct. If
people can't be bothered to provide sufficient information or background
detail when asking a question, why should we try and work out what it
was you were trying to say! If you were a researcher, what would say
when asked to find the life history of John Smith born somewhere in
England, sometime in the 16th century?

The hijacking is a fact of life because people do not understand the
difference between two common verbs or commands: write and reply. They
read a message thread and then click reply to send a new message rather
than using the write command.

Me. I only ever use plain text. Can't be bothered with fancy scripts and
making things look pretty.

In the Durch version there is an option where you can choose that a reply
follows the original setting.

Like I implied, Mike, even when set to only send in plain text to a
particular address, some email clients such as Outlook Express which I use,
still insist on sending a reply in the format of the original. A pain in the
neck to change them and no matter how hard I try I know I miss some!

I am afraid I am guilty of the same thing Ron! I too use Outlook Express and
have it set to send in plain text for this List but, when replying to
someone who has sent in html, my reply is in the same format and I cannot
find a way to change this without going to Format and clicking on Plain Text
before sending the message.
Colin.
