Re: [LegacyUG] Backups

2010-08-05 Thread Sherry/Support
That would work *if* your multimedia files were all in the same folder.

The Multimedia Backup in Legacy backs up only those multimedia files
which are linked to in Legacy.

For a lot of users, their linked multimedia files are all over the
place and not in the c:\Legacy\Pictures folder.

How about right click the folder and select "Send To..." and then select
"Compressed (zipped) folder". That's about as easy as it can get. This is Win7
which is probably identical to Vista. My XP box is not running right now but I
believe it was the same. (I'm thinking Windows ZIP support started with WinXP).

RE: [LegacyUG] For Sherry or other Legacy Employee

2010-08-05 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I'm sure the folks at Millennia are aware that having 4 or 5 URLs in their sig
counts as so many points against the message being regarded as SPAM. My point
is that RoadRunner is wound so tight in their rules that whatever point value
those URLs come to will characterize the message as spam as far as RoadRunner
is concerned and they block the message within one of their own hops before it
could land on the email box. I'm suggesting that RoadRunner relax their rules
in line with the rest of the Internet world or add a config line in their own
servers allowing all messages from LegacyUsers.com because Millennia will never
remove those very informative and necessary sig lines. I sometimes wonder if
RoadRunner has any sys tech that knows how to config their own servers.

Anyhow, we should drop this thread now before Sherry drops the hammer on us.
While it all may be informative, it isn't really helping other users in the
Legacy program.

It does appear that LUG mail is now coming through to my Road Runner account.
Let's see how long it lasts.

Brian, for your info, Road Runner is not suggesting that Legacy change the
format of it's e-mail header. Not at all. They're suggesing that it's a problem
with an e-mail address or URL in their signature block which could be signaled
as "spam"

Just a comment on this issue. I've come to expect this from many ISPs whose
customers experience mail problems. They want the source to change the format
of the email headers just so they can handle the email, never mind the impact
it may have on the rest of the world. Here's a simple question: why doesn't
RoadRunner change their rules to conform with the rest of the world?

OK, I know this has little to do with the workings of Legacy but it kind of
ticks me off when I see messages like this coming from ISPs whose clocks are
wound too tight, especially RoadRunner who has gained somewhat of a rogue
personality amongst Internet users.

Once again, Millennia Corp does not run or control the list server. There
merely contract for its services. Sporadic mail delivery problems can probably
be traced back to the server. I personally hope that whenever their current
contract expires, Millennia goes out for new bids.

Re: [LegacyUG] Search for event details

2010-08-05 Thread Dennis M . Kowallek
This problem pops up at least once a year on the LUG.

If you have an individual with 2 events, one event WITH a 1911 date and
one event WITHOUT, what happens when you tell Legacy to list individuals
WITHOUT a 1911 date? It will list this individual because at least one
of the dates WAS NOT 1911.

So if you really want to find individuals WITHOUT any 1911 events, you
should first tag everyone in your database. Then search for individuals
WITH a 1911 event. Then UNTAG these individuals. The tagged individuals
that are left are those WITHOUT any 1911 events.

Confused yet? Maybe someone else can do better with this explanation.

Hi Gwen,

Of the 1911 Census people who were improperly included, have you checked
them to be sure their 1911 date is in the date section and not in the
description section? I've had almost the identical problem all because some
of my dates ended up in the description section when I imported to Legacy.

Hi everyone

I am hoping this has not been asked before.
I would like to make a list of individuals who do not have 1911
census details in the events I have created.

I did a search
IndividualEvent-date Not equal to 1911
All ok I got a list of 3863 individuals

I checked the info and found that some on the list had been included
even though their 1911 date had been filled in.

I am a little nervous with this, as I am not sure now that the search
is full proof, and wonder if I am doing it the
wrong way. It seems a little hit and miss to me?

Re: [LegacyUG] web pages

2010-08-05 Thread Ron Ferguson
Julia,

I have a blog on Blogger (my last one at http://bit.ly/bVsjOv) and I would
not like to try and put my website on it! On reflection, whilst I can see
how to put one page on it, I cannot see how I would do it for linked pages.
I have tested WordPress for others, although I have nevr used it myself. My
memory is that it is a template based management system based on PHP and
would not be suitable for including the Legacy output. I also think that it
requires you to have your own web host. I did at one time briefly think of
writing a template which would accomodate Legacy Pedigree pages, but never
got round to it. There may well be one though.

The last page of my web tutorials does refer to some free sites to which
Legacy webpages can be imported, and how to use FTP, the software is again
obtainable for free - I use WinSCP. Because the use of this software is not
directly related to Legacy, if you have questions about this I suggest that
you address them to WUL at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/ where there
are plenty of Legacy users who can help you.

Lavern,

It may look confusing but it's accurate. I enter names in the language in
which they are recorded, and if, and only if, they have, and use, an
equivalent in another language then it is included as an AKA.

re: [LegacyUG] Backups

2010-08-05 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Tim,

A totally clean re-installation of Legacy might fix the backup problem.

1.Please copy your family file and multimedia (pictures, sound, video,
etc.) to a safe place. 2.Next, go to the Control Panel and open the
Programs and Features tool or the Add/Remove Programs tool (which one depends
on the version of Windows), then highlight Legacy Family Tree 7 and remove it.*
3.Use Windows Explorer and browse to the Legacy folder on your hard drive
and delete it. 4.Reboot your computer. 5.Download the most recent
version, Legacy Family Tree 7.4 Deluxe, free from the following link:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadNewLegacy7Deluxe.asp. (This is a free
upgrade from version 7.0 to 7.4.) The installation password is all one word (no
space) with only lower case letters: legacy7. Use your version 7 customer
number to unlock the deluxe features. *If you get the message "Could not open
INSTALL.LOG file" go to the next step and delete the Legacy folder on your hard
drive. Next go back to step 2, this time your computer will notify you the
Legacy can't be found and ask you if you want to delete any references to it.
Click Yes.

Recently, I seem to have lost the ability to backup my data and
multimedia files either on closing Legacy or going to File - Backup,
despite selecting Data Files and Multimedia Files in Customise Backup.
When I backup to Legacy, removable drive or even the desktop, nothing
happens.

Previously I could view the backup in progress and then find the
relevant zip files.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: [LegacyUG] Backups

2010-08-05 Thread Sherry/Support
This is a known bug reported by very few users which we haven't been
able to duplicate.

The programmers are trying to figure out why this is happening and how
to fix it.

In the meantime, you can do a manual back up of the Family File. Go to
the c:\Legacy\Data folder and highlight the first file with your file
name. Hold down the shift key and click on the last file with your
file name. Right click and select Send to... > Compressed File to zip
those files up together and then move that zip file to your backup
location off of your hard drive.

There's no easy way to do a multimedia backup other than backing up
all your multimedia files.

Sincerely,
Sherry

Once again, Millennia Corp does not run or control the list server. There
merely contract for its services. Sporadic mail delivery problems can probably
be traced back to the server. I personally hope that whenever their current

Thanks. After posting the message I got to thinking about it and felt sure it
was probably through Legacy's rudimentary Edit process, something I've looked
at only once and decided it didn't have any of the needed procedures that I
would normally use. I use Photoshop for all my photo editing requirements. OK,
so I guess Legacy can convert after all.

Jenny,

I am not sure that we are on the same thread here! The one which I followed
pointed out that when creating web pages in the coding PNGs are converted
into JPGs. However, the OP did not go far enough - so are GIFs. It maybe
that all formats are converted to JPG but I wouldn't know since I only use
those 3 types in Legacy.

The OP is quite correct, it's an absolute pain which has lasted longer than
my arthritis.

[LegacyUG] Picture format conversion

2010-08-05 Thread Jenny M Benson
(Sorry about this not being in the right thread - I deleted the original
by mistake and can't get it back.)

When you load a picture file into Legacy and then edit it you have to save
it to preserve the edits. Normally you save in the same format, but when
you click Save you are offered a Save As... screen where you not only
select destination and filename, but also file type, so you can convert to
another file type if you wish.

And on related topic, I do wish that screen didn't *always* offer .bmp as
the detault format, rather than "suggesting" the original file type.
Surely no one in their right minds saves anything as .bmp anyway, do
they?! I dread to think what size hard disk I would need for all my
images if I did.

I attach photos I want to use on webpages to events. The preferred
photo for each event will display on the webpage. If I have pictures
that don't fit a specific event then I create a "Photo" event for it.
(I can't remember if "Photo" was a Legacy Master Event or if I created
it.) The Photo event looks a little odd in reports (especially if you
don't include the pictures in the report) but since my main focus is
the website, I don't mind that. I also have lots of additional photos
on a photo sharing site. I include the html to link to that site in
the marriage notes for my grandparents and great-grandparents.

Here's my grandmother's webpage for an example:
