RE: [LegacyUG] Alternate Name vs. AKA Event

Jenny:

My source citations also include alternate spellings exactly as they were
written, but names included in source citations aren't found in Internet
searches. I also like to use diacriticals in names but those aren't found
either, so I have them with diacriticals in the preferred spelling and without
as an alternate name.

You can try but it probably won't work. I installed Legacy on a brand new
Toshiba with Windows 7 and I **still** have the backup issue. I also recently
reinstalled the OS and all programs on my Windows XP Pro machine and **still**
have the backup issue. Although I am able to backup on exit, I usually just go
to the Home tab and backup manually.

Tim,

A totally clean re-installation of Legacy might fix the backup problem.

1.    Please copy your family file and multimedia (pictures, sound, video, etc.)

to a safe place.
2.    Next, go to the Control Panel and open the Programs and Features tool or
the Add/Remove Programs tool (which one depends on the version of Windows), then

highlight Legacy Family Tree 7 and remove it.*
3.    Use Windows Explorer and browse to the Legacy folder on your hard drive
and delete it.
4.    Reboot your computer.
5.    Download the most recent version, Legacy Family Tree 7.4 Deluxe, free from

the following link:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadNewLegacy7Deluxe.asp.  (This is a free
upgrade from version 7.0 to 7.4.) The installation password is all one word (no
space) with only lower case letters:  legacy7. Use your version 7 customer
number to unlock the deluxe features.

*If you get the message "Could not open INSTALL.LOG file" go to the next step
and delete the Legacy folder on your hard drive. Next go back to step 2, this
time your computer will notify you the Legacy can't be found and ask you if you
want to delete any references to it. Click Yes.

RE: [LegacyUG] Alternate Name vs. AKA Event

2010-08-06 Thread CE Wood
The further back in history you go, the more documents, books, genealogies,
IPMs, Close Rolls, etc., that you research, the more essential it is to have
all the alternate names in your Name List of Index.

You will never have a clue that some of the people mentioned are related to
anyone in your database unless you have these old, often foreign, often
foreign alliterations, and names changed to match a place or estate, or
takingyour wife's name, to say nothing of earldoms.

And, as far as long-time "Englished" names, many of the spellings are not even
close to how they are spelled now! After all, English spelling did not begin
to be standardized until after Johnson's Dictionary of 1755.

I would agree that you can enter Notes as part of the Source Citation,
but I would argue that this is very different to having an Event with
Notes. Personally, I use Source Citation Comments for comments/notes
about the Source itself; Notes about the Event itself are in Event Notes.

But each to his/her own - as you say, Legacy is flexible enough.

RE: [LegacyUG] Alternate Name vs. AKA Event

2010-08-06 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Kathy:

Whether you use the aka field or an alternate name event may depend on use(s)
intended for your database. If you intend to produce a book, report, or web
page you should check out how Legacy handles the two options and use the one
that reads best. A "purist" would list an aka only if the individual actually
used more than one name. At the other extreme, some would list every spelling
variation from all records for the individual as aka's in order to have those
versions appear in the Name List for convenient reference as they research. I
post my GEDCOM at RootsWeb and want it to be found in searches so I sometimes
add an alternate name that isn't supported by the records simply because many
other posters use that version and I want my file to come up in searches for
that spelling.

It would be nice if Legacy had separate fields; one for true aka's and another
for alternate spellings, but that probably isn't likely to happen.

yes, that makes sense and I would like the answer to that as well; the
aka/alternate name is one of my big issues. So many people are known by
different names or different spellings and I'm not sure of the best way to
fully utilize both of these options; or if they have any other use aside from
simply storing those alternate spellings for viewing as needed.

RE: [LegacyUG] Alternate Name vs. AKA Event

2010-08-06 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Greeting Jenny,

I'm not wanting telling anyone how to structure and choose their method of
entering citations or notes (after all, that is the beauty of Legacy is that it
is very flexible in that regard) but wouldn't you agree that "Notes, Dates, etc
to explain the change of name" can also be entered via the Alternate Names
window via the Notes/Comments of the source citation to that name? I just
didn't want anybody to get the idea that by using the Alternate Names window
would preclude them from entering any notes whatsoever.

I'm trying to think ahead here and the one big difference is that using the
Alternate Names window would have the notes only appear in reports as part of
the source citation footnote in tiny font (either at the bottom on the page or
at the end) whereas using the AKA Event would have the notes appear in reports
as part of the main body of text.

The other difference is that by using the Alternate Names window and when
printing reports, the user could choose to eliminate source citations (I don't
recommend that) and thereby the accompanying Notes, or the user could print the
source citations but choose not to have the Notes that are part of the citation
printed. Maybe it all boils down as to just what is in those notes and whether
the user wants to share that with the world.:-) Using the AKA Event means the
Notes will always print (assuming that the user has included events in which
the choice is all or none).

Hi Linda
I added photo's to events, however when I create the web pages the photo's
do not show up. I wonder is there some options I need to click somewhere so
that the photo's appear on the web pages.

Hi Linda
That is fantastic, exactly what I want to do, I will try this method.
It was great to see the sample web page.

I attach photos I want to use on webpages to events. The preferred
photo for each event will display on the webpage. If I have pictures
that don't fit a specific event then I create a "Photo" event for it.
(I can't remember if "Photo" was a Legacy Master Event or if I created
it.) The Photo event looks a little odd in reports (especially if you
don't include the pictures in the report) but since my main focus is
the website, I don't mind that. I also have lots of additional photos
on a photo sharing site. I include the html to link to that site in
the marriage notes for my grandparents and great-grandparents.

Here's my grandmother's webpage for an example:

RE: [LegacyUG] Alternate Name vs. AKA Event

2010-08-06 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
One advantage that I can think of is that the normal "Alternate Names" window
gives you a button to "Swap Alternate Name with Main Name". This has come in
handy for me on several occasions in the past when I've discovered what I
thought was an alternate name turned out to be the person's registered birth
name.

In addition, that "Alternate Names" window has the Source Citation icon which
can be applied to any of the alternate names and just as any other citation,
actual source text or comments can be added there which can be selected to be
added to reports if desired, as well as the typical multimedia attachment such
as a scan of a document or picture.

What's the advantage of having the info split between the "Alternate Names" and
creating an "AKA Event"?

I use an AKA Event when there has been a formal change of name such as by Deed
Poll. For alternate spellings or slightly different names I find in records I
use AKA. For "Usually known as" I use Quoted Names such as Janet Kay "Jan"

I think the event type of AKA is one that you added to your family file as it
is not a default event normally found in Legacy.

I thought I'd answered that question in my previous post: if you want
Notes, Dates etc to explain the change of name then you would need to
use an AKA Event. If you just want to record the AKA and nothing else
you use the "Alternate Names" window. You can (and should!) attach
Source Citations to either.

yes, that makes sense and I would like the answer to that as well; the
aka/alternate name is one of my big issues. So many people are known by
different names or different spellings and I'm not sure of the best way to
fully utilize both of these options; or if they have any other use aside
from simply storing those alternate spellings for viewing as needed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Families app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

2010-08-06 Thread John Zimmerman
Hi Kathy, the price of the Families app in U.S. Dollars is $14.99. The version
is the same for the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The app senses the device on
which it has been installed and adjusts to that device. For example, the
larger screen area of the iPad allows for additional generations to be
displayed in the pedigree view.

which can be easily transferred to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad,

the following functionality:

- To Do Lists

- Master and Detail Sources

Re: [LegacyUG] Alternate Name vs. AKA Event

2010-08-06 Thread Jennifer Wilhelmi
If you open the individual's screen where you see the name, birth, death,
events, etc., there is an icon to the right of the name - three overlaid
people. If you click on this, you get a screen where you can add alternate
names. Click add and you can enter the first, last, middle, and any preceding
or following titles. Alternately, if you add an event, one of the event types
is AKA. While they seem to give you the same information, I don't know if the
program offers special functionality for one or the other that would make it
more advantageous to use one or the other.

Does that make sense?

what is the cost in US dollars? The website only shows compatibility with
Iphone or Ipad but your email also includes iPod Touch. Which version is
used for the Touch? Thank you.

Using the "AKA" screen, you only have fields for inputting the alternate
name/spelling. This is fine if that is all you want/need to record. If
you wanted to write notes about the AKA though, or give details about
how and when the name was acquired - for example, if there was a Deed
Poll, then you would need to create an Event.

There isn't an alternate name option and an AKA option. Alternate
name = AKA.

RE: [LegacyUG] Backups also happening to me

2010-08-06 Thread Eileen
Hi,

I thought I would be safe and stopped updating the program, getting to old to
have to keep changing or trying new things.

My program is a 7.0.0.90, and it (out of the blue some months ago) also stopped
all backups, I get around this by saving the program with a new name off of my
hard drive, and the program that is open changes the name to my latest save.

Recently, I seem to have lost the ability to backup my data and
multimedia files either on closing Legacy or going to File – Backup,
despite selecting Data Files and Multimedia Files in Customise Backup.
When I backup to Legacy, removable drive or even the desktop, nothing
happens.

Previously I could view the backup in progress and then find the
relevant zip files.

What am I doing wrong?

If you did actually select "Not equal to" and entered "1911" but you
have entered the Event date as "02 April 1911" (or some variant) then
you would not get the result you are wanting. You would need to enter
the date in your Search criteria exactly as you entered it in your Event
data.

[LegacyUG] Families iPhone/iPad App for Legacy released yesterday

2010-08-06 Thread hwedhlor
Pardon this rather commercial-sounding message, but those of you who are
iPhone, or iPad users and are looking for an app that is compatible with
Legacy should have a look at TelGen Limited's "Families" app, which was
released late yesterday evening. I participated in beta testing of
Families and can recommend it without reservation.

Families is capable of displaying great detail from your Legacy
databases, including Family View, Pedigree View, Index searchable by
Given Name, Surname or RIN, Events, To Do Lists, Master and Detail
Sources, Locations and Addresses with geolocation via Google Maps,
Alternate Names, Pictures, with the ability to add pictures from the
camera or photo album, Portrait and Landscape mode in all views, with
full screen support on the iPad.

Families will handle databases with over 300,000 records on the iPhone.
Data is completely editable, and syncs to, and from your PC using a free
Families Sync program downloadable from the vendor, TelGen. I have
found Families to be a joy to use, and TelGen has been extremely
responsive to both questions and suggestions.
