Re: [LegacyUG] Merging 2 files

2011-02-02 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
The way you keep them is, during the merging, each choice that has 2 different
notes for a person, you can cut and paste all, from right to left. If you put
the lower RIN on the left, the lower RIN wll be kept. Make backups before, then
you can not worry if done wrong.

Just import one into the other. The only problem I have found is that you cant
keep the notes from both files, But someone else may be able to tell you how to

Re: [LegacyUG] Scrapbook does not seem to work correctly

2011-02-02 Thread Bruce Jones
Thanks, Rich
I will look for another way to get what I want.
I could, of course, put all pictures as *individual" pictures, then tag the
individuals I want, but I don't want all the individual pictures, just the
marriage pictures.
Maybe I could create a dummy person, called "pictures" and attach, via the
Picture Center, all the pictures I want to display.

Re: [LegacyUG] Scrapbook does not seem to work correctly

2011-02-02 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Tagging in the marriage mode has never worked, IMHO. I have never been able to
isolate a few marriages. Notice The individual list has a search button but the
marriage list does not. So my guess is that the problem is that there is no
place I found where you can choose marriage tag 9 (or others). When I put
Search find marriage marriage place contains Illinois, it returns the
individual list, not the marriage list.

I am having a problem with the scrapbook function.  Here is what I have done
1. Displayed the Marriage list
2. Cleared marriage tag 9 for all marriages
3. Clicked to set marriage tag 9 on about 10 families
4. Clicked on View, Scrapbook
5. Selected Marriages (not individuals) and Marriages with tag 9
6. Selected Print Scrapbook & then Preview
I definitely get pictures from marriages that do not have marriage tag 9
It seems that I get *all* marriage pictures

Any suggestions?
Can anyone replicate this?
Thanks,
Bruce

I think what you're looking for is the feature called "Intellishare". Like a lot

One other way to find it would be to export your entire file to a
GEDCOM. Then open the GEDCOM in a text editor and search for the
misspelling. That should provide a clue to where it is in your database.

[LegacyUG] Truly Weird

2011-02-02 Thread Gene Hutson
Fellow listers,

This one is truly weird, I have a family member born in Delaware Co,
Iowa.

On the family view, it shows Deleware Co, Iowa, I’m thinking “ah it’s
just a typo”
so I go to Locations list and there it is listed correctly, Delaware Co,
Iowa. Ok,
maybe tired eyes, close it up and go back to family view, nope, it’s
still spelled
wrong, OK, back to Locations list, find it, there’s not 2, I already
checked, attempt
to change it to see what happens, erase the ‘a’ and put the ‘a’ back in
and go
back to family view, nope, still spelled wrong.

   Anyone else have this anomoly??

   Any ideas??

Syble,

That process is fine, although instead of copying the back up via the USB
stick I would just backup from the copied Family File. If you do not have
the back-up Icon on your Toolbar, right click on the tool bar and drag it
from the main box to the smaller one.

I did it like was instructed below.  It seems to be okay.  I guess I'm just
afraid it's not going to copy correctly.
I THANK all who responded.  I am still considering other options. Do I
understand correctly.

1. I have all my images in one folder, so I copied & replaced it onto the
thumb drive, then to my Legacy file on Laptop (Goal is to have ALL in
updated folder on Laptop).

2. I backed up my family file on PC then copied to thumb including mm files.
Then I restored this zip file to Laptop.

3. I'm assuming that all images/mm will then connect to respective places.

Thanks again.   Syble

Syble,
Why not just use the backup and restore function built into Legacy.
Main PC:
1. Backup file and multimedia letting both have date added to filename..
2. copy backup files to a thumbdrive or network drive.
3. then copy the backup files back to the laptop’s Legacy folder where you
keep backups.
4. Restore family file with same name.
5. When you are done with the file on your laptop, then repeat the steps as
above for the laptop. You only have to backup the media files only if you
have added or changed them.

Ron you said "
or copy the file to a USB stick and then import into your PC – the easiest."

I mainly work on my PC, but do like to keep a fairly current copy on my
Laptop,  I too had gone to the archives and couldn't figure out what to do.
In the past I've always backed up to "My Documents", which has 2 neat zip
files, but due to some major problems getting a new Windows 7 PC up and
going with Legacy, I was instructed to back up to C:Legacy/Data, now I have
these multiple files in My Documents and in the Legacy/Data folder.
Questions: 1. I don't want multiple copies of files I don't need, I know I
can delete the older zip files, but what about the others?
2.  I saw another post and someone said we should backup these other files
occasionally,  how do I back these up?
3.  Has this always been like this or is this something new?
Thanks,
Syble

Sandy,

There are various ways of doing this. If you have internet access for both
you can use a program called Dropbox – for safety make sure that you open
the laptop so that the data will be copied to their server,, and close it
before starting the PC, if you have a router then you can network the 2
machines (more complex, depending on the operating systems) – this is not
the only way of networking BTW,, or copy the file to a USB stick and then
import into your PC – the easiest.

Hi everyone, I did read this on legacy years ago but did not think I would
need it.
Can someone tell me how when you are using 2 computers - 1 laptop and 1
desktop how you make one the masterfile, so that you can use the laptop and
then when you come home update the masterfile. So you dont inadvertently
loose information on the chnage over.

Or use ctrl+alt+delete and close Legacy. This can be caused by a screen, eg.
Options, not being closed. You will often find it minimised near the task bar,
just close the screen.

I would restart the computer; I believe I had that happen once quite awhile ago
and that's what I had to do to fix it.

Re: [LegacyUG] using multiple computers/backing up

2011-02-02 Thread Ron Ferguson

I mainly work on my PC, but do like to keep a fairly current copy on my
Laptop, I too had gone to the archives and couldn't figure out what to do.
In the past I've always backed up to "My Documents", which has 2 neat zip
files, but due to some major problems getting a new Windows 7 PC up and
going with Legacy, I was instructed to back up to C:Legacy/Data, now I have
these multiple files in My Documents and in the Legacy/Data folder.

Hopefully someday Legacy will update their webpage creation to give us
more options, but I still use it to update my website.

I'd really like the option of changing the font size, it seems odd to
have the Sources font larger than the main information and Family Links.

I assume you are aware that LTools can clean up pedigree pages and give you a
css file you can edit to get the font sizing you want? I've also been playing
with ways to augment the various tools I make use of, and because of this
thread decided to play with the Legacy web pages a bit. If interested, I've
just added an entry to my blog (link below) on a way to not only add style to
the pedigree pages, but any of the Legacy generated pages.
