RE: [LegacyUG] cemetery entries

2011-02-10 Thread Garry Howard
Hi

The method I use that works well for me is to place the information in the
notes field of the burial location field next to the burial date. I head it up,
Burial location and add all relevant cemetery information, name, plot number
etc. I can then do a detailed search for all individuals using the notes-burial
field and selecting, contains, in the how to look field and entering the name
of the cemetery in the what to look for field. For me it is simple and
straightforward.

Subject: [LegacyUG] cemetery entries

What is the best way to enter cemetry data? I have some with the cemetery name
in the Burial location and some with the name in the description field of
cemetery event with address in comment field and plot location also in the
comment field. I want to be able to access all entries in a cemetery. I can find
on standard for this and several other entries ie census and some marriage
data. Is there a prefered or standard for particular data entries?

Format of Source List is not standardized. When using copywrited data with
permission how am I to be sure all manditory data is printed or gathered?

I know there are several questions in one query, but I have finally reached a
level where I am not just gathering information but sorting and displaying my
results. Thank you for any assistance.

I also wish there was a way to upload these to the LUG. I have sent them to
several people who have asked for them and have several more interested. It
would be much easier that way.

The tutorials are actually handouts I made for my presentation to a local
users group and have not been "beta tested". I would therefore like some
feedback on how they work for you. Others who have asked and have not yet
received them should get them as soon as I have time to send them. I am now
heading to the local community college for a genealogy class.

Re: [LegacyUG] Repeating info and direct line

2011-02-10 Thread Noddie
Hi again Mike

Sorry I was hasty on my reply had my little grandson on my lap, and
am also using a Mac
computer, which does not always cross over with the same key functions.
After reading your info I tried the F key, but had not got my Mac which
also used Parallels, set to use the F keys. Had not realised you
need to manually change
this function. I did some reading and found I need to go into system
apparently and change
the function for this. Am fiddling with this now and hopefully it
shall work in some way now.
Thanks for your time with this
Much appreciated.

[LegacyUG] Search help

2011-02-10 Thread John Roose
As a long time Legacy user I use the search feature quite often. I've hit
the same question twice and am not sure if I can solve it via search -
couldn't figure out how the first time - and now hope some guru out there
can help!

I have a mother's will that lists three female married children. The
deceased mother may/may not be the birth mother of the children due to
having had two or more husbands. This is in the late 1700's when families
tended to use the same first names VERY frequently.

The search I need is to find the family or families in my Legacy database
that have daughters with all three of the given names, or alternately with
just two.

[mother: Jean Harris; daughters: Jean Dawkins, Cloey Lisles, Lettes
Cockrell; the three daughters surnames are common in my data file, the
mother's surname is not in there - yet]

All suggestions appreciated.

John

Re: [LegacyUG] Norfolk County Massachusetts

2011-02-10 Thread Genealogy mail
It is not a bug, that is how the verifier works. To keep the error from
showing she can create a new place of ,Norfolk County,,Massachusetts Bay
Colony and in the notes for that location put the date range 1643-1680 and
set that person to use that location. Put a check mark in the verified box
so as to remind you not to merge that location with the other current
location.

You should probably report that as a bug. I got around the error message by
using Norfolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. The USA County Verifier is
correct. Norfolk County did not exist in the **state** of Massachusetts
until
1793. But one existed in the **colony** from 1643-1679/80.

The USA County Verifier has two listings For Norfolk County,
Massachusetts: 1793- Present and 1643 - 1680.
but when I try to use it as a location with a date of 1661 the error
message comes up that Norfolk County did not exist
in the state of Massachusetts until 1793. The options appear to be
leave the county blank or turn off County Verifier for all entries
which I rather not do

You can just ignore it, can't you?  When the verifier comes up, click
"OK" and move on.  A little annoying that you'll get the pop-up every
time you enter Norfolk County, but it doesn't stop you from entering
the county in your file.  Tell me if I'm misunderstanding your
concern.

BTW, you should submit a customer service ticket so Legacy can add
this to their "to be fixed" list.

Did you even read the Help file information, that I pointed you to?

Other Shortcut Keys
From the Family View, Pedigree View, Information, Marriage and Notes windows,
you can press F4 to display the Sources window. From the Family View, Pedigree
View, Information and Marriage windows, you can press F5 to display the Notes
window. From any Note field, you can press F7 to start the spell checker. From
the Information, Marriage and LDS windows, F8 can be used to duplicate field
contents from the previously saved record. You can also press Shift-F9 to
memorize any location field and F9 to play the memorized field back to any other
location field. (Shift-F11 / F11 and Shift F12 / F12 also work the same way to
memorize and play back field entries.)

F9 and Shift-F9 appear to do what you want.

Re: [LegacyUG] Repeating info and direct line

2011-02-10 Thread Genealogy mail
Gwen,
Actually if the information for the field you are on is the same as the
previous person then all you have to do is click on the fields label and it
will put the same information in that field. If the information is not the same
as the previous person but was used before then you can right-click on the
label and get a list of the last 10 entries for that field. This procedure also
works for the events screen, which makes it fast to enter the same event for
several different individuals. Just open or create an event with the info that
you want, then when you create a new event for a different individual with the
same event type, just click each label of the event and it will fill in the
field with last info used for that field.

Re: [LegacyUG] Linking FileID with RIN

Done. 'Make a Suggestion' submitted yesterday at approximately 3:15pm
CSD, "Cross Reference FileID with RIN", included 'why' it should be
done.

BTWit's been a while since I used the 'Make a Suggestion' feature.
An email address is asked for, it would have been nice to get an
automated email reply back which included the quoted suggestion, date,
time---a nice customer service touch. Additional 'Make a Suggestion'
submitted so stating.
