Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.

2011-12-14 Thread 2marion wimps
Dennis, The backup I used was two days old. I backup every other time
I use Legacy - which is about every third day so in any given month
there are at least 10 - 12 backups. Occasionally I will go in and
delete some of the very old backups so the drive doesn't get too
clogged,

Paul, When I change computers naturally the photo path didn't link so
I went in and re-linked every single photo and file by hand after
some discussion with the LUG. Since that time everything has been fine
and each photo was linked to the E drive where the files are all held.

Richard, Yes I realise now that keeping photos in a file away from the
Legacy file is not a good idea but when I started many moons ago it
seemed a good idea at the time and since then the files have grown so
much that it didn't seem like a good idea to try and transfer them
all. Knowledge comes with time!
I haven't been able to check if the new folders I have inserted are
showing (memory is my problem here!!!) but

. the restore I did was from 11 12 12 - I have nothing prior to
the changeover in the backups that I can see as a restore. I have just
gone in and opened up a new file (with a new name) and then restored
from 04 12 12 - and lo and behold all of the pictures are there. The
only backup I have on my computer from the old computer is back in
April 2011 - that is the link to the old photos but why would a
restore from the 11 12 11 pick up a file back from April - it has
never done this before. I have just restored two more from different
dates and they seem to be fine.

Now it seems I either have the choice of relinking all the photos or
taking an old file and working out all the changes I have made (which
are reasonably numerous)

Thank you for all of your help, it is greatly appreciated (I don't
want to do a separate email at the end thanking eveyone - I find it
aggravating to open a possible interesting email and find it just says
thank you)

However, I do have a sort of work-a-round suggestion that might be

Jenny,

Whilst it is not the same, if you have Google Earth installed, have a look
at http://www.fergys.co.uk/Ferguson/frgindex_files/NorWestEngBirths.kml.
This shows the increase/movement of Fergusons in my files from around 1600
to 2010 (use the slider animation icon). Whilst I am not going to write a
program to do it, it would not be too difficult to enable the selection of
families, and only display those selected.

The link may also be accessed from http://www.fergys.co.uk/Ferguson/maps.php
and basic instructions on writing the scripts are given at
http://www.fergys.co.uk/Blogs/GE.php .

I agree that this would not really be a suitable Legacy project!

Of course. Another way to accomplish enhancement #4 (and make a much more

that a single source citation/detail record can be linked to any number of
events in any number of individuals and marriages. So, when I link a source
citation/detail to an event that is pasted to twelve different individuals,
when I go back to change something in the source citation/detail three months
later, I only have to change one source citation/detail record referenced by
twelve event records, not twelve source citations/detail records referenced by
twelve event records. This would be a major change to the way Legacy works
(no more need for a source clipboard), and so would probably be a big pill for
Millennia to swallow.

Not only a big pill to swallow for Millennia, but for the users who are
used to it working the way it does. When you change it you would have to
pop up a warning that it will also be changed everywhere else, and maybe
even have to offer the user the opportunity to break that shared
citation into separate citations (in case the user only wants to change
it for one individual and not the others).

I remember discussing this on the LUG in my 1st couple of years on the
LUG (and I've been here 9 years). It's probably not going to happen. The
best you can probably hope for is a better search/replace to make things
easier.

I've seen this discussed many times. I prefer to use the location as it was
at the time of the event. Searching the archives, most responded that they
show the current location in Notes. I'm currently entering family who
settled in Portsmouth, RI, in 1638 - starting out with my ancestor who had
14 children. I must add the current location for these parents and their
children - and then their descendants until the State of Rhode Island was
formed. It seems there must be an easier way. Any thoughts?

 Sherry-

Does that mean if I were to make an RTF book with an index, and I insert,
say, two pictures for my grandfather, and it pushes the rest of the book
back one additional page, then the index will notice that and automatically
update? (I am doubting it, but will it?)

 Thank you.

Once they are together you can use the map icon for an individual who
has children, spouses or parents in the two families. The map icon on
the main tool bar with an individual selected will mark the map with
locations associated with that individual. Use the options button to
select the items to include on the map.

NOTE: If you are choosing the parents birth turn OFF the option to limit
events to the life of the person.

Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event

2011-12-14 Thread leeirons
I just mentioned changing the data structure of the databaseas as one way of
accomplishing enhancement #4. But there is a way to do enhancement #4 that
does not involve changing the way the databse is structured, so I agree with
you Dennis.

I have found the search and replace feature to be tricky to use (please
everyone, do not turn this thread into a discussion on search and replace). At
any rate, my issues are not asociated with just replacing a word or two. I am
wanting to add analysis paragraphs to the comments field of all of my source
citations/details. Typing it in one source citation/detail and haveing it
automatically update all of the other cource citations/details that are copies
of it would save hundreds of hours.

The four enhancements I recommended are not really a new feature, but just make
the existing Advanced Sourcing feature complete. Also, looking at the database
tables, it looks like these enhancements would be reltively easy to develop.
Legacy does not need these 4 enhancements to keep many of its existing users.
It needs these enhancements to keep some of its existing users. But more
importantly, it needs these enhancements to pull market share from Family Tree
Maker and Roots Magic, its two biggest commercial competetors. New users
importing their data from other genealogy programs will need these enhancements
to make cleaning up their data easier.

I see this as a business decision. Low cost enhancements, big potential market
share impact.

Of course. Another way to accomplish enhancement #4 (and make a much more
efficient database) is to reconfigure the data structure of the database so
that a single source citation/detail record can be linked to any number of
events in any number of individuals and marriages. So, when I link a source
citation/detail to an event that is pasted to twelve different individuals,
when I go back to change something in the source citation/detail three
months later, I only have to change one source citation/detail record
referenced by twelve event records, not twelve source citations/detail
records referenced by twelve event records. This would be a major change to
the way Legacy works (no more need for a source clipboard), and so would
probably be a big pill for Millennia to swallow.

The
best you can probably hope for is a better search/replace to make things
 easier.

RE: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents

2011-12-14 Thread Mark Lang
Sherry, Robert,

It doesn't matter (when using Word anyway) when you create the Index in Word. I
do this all the time with the books I create (The Legacy Family), especially my
new book (The Legacy Handbook). Yes Word pushes things about, but if you've
already included an Index, when you add to your book, simply navigate to the
index and right-click any item (it doesn't matter which one) and select the
option to Update Field. Easy.

Kind Regards
