Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
Dennis, The backup I used was two days old. I backup every other time I use Legacy - which is about every third day so in any given month there are at least 10 - 12 backups. Occasionally I will go in and delete some of the very old backups so the drive doesn't get too clogged, Paul, When I change computers naturally the photo path didn't link so I went in and re-linked every single photo and file by hand after some discussion with the LUG. Since that time everything has been fine and each photo was linked to the E drive where the files are all held. Richard, Yes I realise now that keeping photos in a file away from the Legacy file is not a good idea but when I started many moons ago it seemed a good idea at the time and since then the files have grown so much that it didn't seem like a good idea to try and transfer them all. Knowledge comes with time! I haven't been able to check if the new folders I have inserted are showing (memory is my problem here!!!) but . the restore I did was from 11 12 12 - I have nothing prior to the changeover in the backups that I can see as a restore. I have just gone in and opened up a new file (with a new name) and then restored from 04 12 12 - and lo and behold all of the pictures are there. The only backup I have on my computer from the old computer is back in April 2011 - that is the link to the old photos but why would a restore from the 11 12 11 pick up a file back from April - it has never done this before. I have just restored two more from different dates and they seem to be fine. Now it seems I either have the choice of relinking all the photos or taking an old file and working out all the changes I have made (which are reasonably numerous) Thank you for all of your help, it is greatly appreciated (I don't want to do a separate email at the end thanking eveyone - I find it aggravating to open a possible interesting email and find it just says thank you) Marion On 14 December 2011 01:42, Bruce Jones juicebo...@gmail.com wrote: Following Richard's suggestion, when you go to Options Customize Locations View Current List how many paths are shown? However, there are web-based programs where you can show more than one location on the map at the same time, so you can keep that in mind if you intend to ever utilize your information on a website. For example, if a particular family emigrated to California from Michigan, both of those events could show on a Bing or Google mapping system at the same time (you may have to adjust the zoom). On the other hand, if you are speaking about showing how two different families changed their residences, such as the children of the parents moving from Michigan to California, that might require special software. However, I do have a sort of work-a-round suggestion that might be possible, or at least food for thought. You could create an EVENT which says: Parents' Residence: or something that describes what you are after. Then when you input the place name in that event on the child's record, all those locations could show up on your web-based database on the same map. Again, I'm not sure if Legacy has that ability. Just food for thoughtperhaps someone else might come up with some other ideas. If this is not clear, just let me know and I can give you some links to check our website to see how this displays. The event and its source citation/detail now exists as twelve different records in the database. Three months later, I want to change something I have typed in the source citation/detail that is linked to the event. I have to open the source citation/detail of the event of each individual separately to make the change so that it is consistent in all twelve places. This is a huge headache. And I am currently living it with a file of thousands of individuals with tens of thousands of source citations/details with which I used the Source Clipboard liberally to paste common source citation/details on a regular basis. So, when I link a source citation/detail to an event that is pasted to twelve different individuals, when I go back to change something in the source citation/detail three months later, I only have to change one source citation/detail record referenced by twelve event records, not twelve source citations/detail records referenced by twelve event records. This would be a major change to the way Legacy works (no more need for a source clipboard), and so would probably be a big pill for Millennia to swallow. Not only a big pill to swallow for Millennia, but for the users who are used to it working the way it does. When you change it you would have to pop up a warning that it will also be changed everywhere else, and maybe even have to offer the user the opportunity to break that shared citation into separate citations (in case the user only wants to change it for one individual and not the others). I remember discussing this on the LUG in my 1st couple of years on the LUG (and I've been here 9 years). It's probably not going to happen. I am still not receiving the messages from the the New Family Search Legacy list! I have subscribed, unsubscribed and resubscribed several times. The manager of the list hand unsubscribed me and resubscribed me. My ISP says nothing on their end is holding things up. The posts are not going into my spam/junk folder. I can post to the list and everyone (but me) can see the posts. It makes no sense because I have no problems with the main Legacy list at all. Last resort – I am going to use my Yahoo account. I hate to do that because I only check it every couple of weeks but I guess I will need to check it every day now. I have a lot of questions. It should. However I never create the index or TOC until after I'm done editing. Sincerely, Sherry Technical Support Legacy Family Tree On Wed, Dec 14, 2011 at 10:35 AM, Robert E. Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping
Once they are together you can use the map icon for an individual who has children, spouses or parents in the two families. The map icon on the main tool bar with an individual selected will mark the map with locations associated with that individual. Use the options button to select the items to include on the map. NOTE: If you are choosing the parents birth turn OFF the option to limit events to the life of the person. I always try and plot a location correctly on the map when I add it, but I never realised the screen you described was there! Just what I wanted. Me too! Thanks Sherry! I overlooked that icon as well, I guess thinking it just took you to the master location list. RE: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents
And the only times I have even tried to view the scrapbook it has never worked - possibly due to the large number of images I have for some people - it has just sat there, doing its thing, but never actually showing me the pictures. Haven't bothered to retry lately I must admit. What is needed is ability to put multiple images to a single event that can be shown in reports and web pages. The scrap book can not be used for either and, worse, removes any context for the image, so is fairly pointless past its idle entertainment value. Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
I just mentioned changing the data structure of the databaseas as one way of accomplishing enhancement #4. But there is a way to do enhancement #4 that does not involve changing the way the databse is structured, so I agree with you Dennis. I have found the search and replace feature to be tricky to use (please everyone, do not turn this thread into a discussion on search and replace). At any rate, my issues are not asociated with just replacing a word or two. I am wanting to add analysis paragraphs to the comments field of all of my source citations/details. Typing it in one source citation/detail and haveing it automatically update all of the other cource citations/details that are copies of it would save hundreds of hours. The four enhancements I recommended are not really a new feature, but just make the existing Advanced Sourcing feature complete. Also, looking at the database tables, it looks like these enhancements would be reltively easy to develop. Legacy does not need these 4 enhancements to keep many of its existing users. It needs these enhancements to keep some of its existing users. But more importantly, it needs these enhancements to pull market share from Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic, its two biggest commercial competetors. New users importing their data from other genealogy programs will need these enhancements to make cleaning up their data easier. I see this as a business decision. Low cost enhancements, big potential market share impact. Lee Dennis M. Kowallek kowal...@iglou.com wrote: On Tue, 13 Dec 2011 23:53:53 -0500, Lee Irons leeir...@cox.net wrote: Of course. Another way to accomplish enhancement #4 (and make a much more efficient database) is to reconfigure the data structure of the database so that a single source citation/detail record can be linked to any number of events in any number of individuals and marriages. The best you can probably hope for is a better search/replace to make things easier. -- Dennis Kowallek (LTools/Custom Programming) http://zippersoftware.com/ltools/index.htm http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ltools NOTE TO LUG USERS: Use plain text if you want me to read your post. RE: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents
Sherry, Robert, It doesn't matter (when using Word anyway) when you create the Index in Word. I do this all the time with the books I create (The Legacy Family), especially my new book (The Legacy Handbook). Yes Word pushes things about, but if you've already included an Index, when you add to your book, simply navigate to the index and right-click any item (it doesn't matter which one) and select the option to Update Field. Easy.
