Re: [LegacyUG] selecting a few new people to upload to ancestry

2012-04-13 Thread Ron Ferguson
I am sorry, James, but I am not clear as to what you mean, but it is early
morning!

My difficulty may be due to the fact that I have yet to wake up! I don't think
you are saying that your script allows only new files to be uploaded, but what
does it do? As I said, I no longer subscribe to Ancestry, but even if I did it
would be Ancestry.co.uk and not. Com. Consequentially I cannot see the images
to which yoou refer in your blog. Would it not be possible for you to include
before and after screen-shots in your blog?

Bruce,

Writing from my Asus Transformer Prime tablet...I do not always have my
laptop with me but I usually have either my phone or tablet with me. So the
portability is what I like. The battery life of my tablet is 18 hours
(when the keyboard is connected) or 8 alone, which is better than most
laptops. I only use Families as a viewer however.

RE: [LegacyUG] Event Pictures

2012-04-13 Thread Jan Roberts
Sherry,
Today when I reread the Solutions by Error number I do see that is says, almost
at the top of the instructions, to Run Check / Repair, and basically to do what
I ended up doing - not sure how I missed that the first time, because I
remember that most of the instructions seemed to pertain to earlier versions of
Windows than Windows 7. However, the real point of my message was that as well
as clearing up the Error 3012 it ALSO solved the report Settings Problem and I
was quite surprised to find that a Check / Repair of my Database solved what
appeared to be a programming glitch.
I ran the Compact File because the on-screen instructions at the end of Check /
Repair suggested I do so, not the Solutions By Number page.

Cheers

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Event Pictures

The solutions on the website *always* apply to the error number that they're
linked to and are the solutions we have found that usually resolve the issue.

The steps on the website don't say to compact - they're

1. Repair Legacy by installing the update again 2. Reset the temp folder 3. Run
check/repair

and if those steps don't work

4. Export to a new Family FIle.

Running Compact Family File is always a good idea to help keep your file a
smaller size. Check/Repair compacts it a bit but Compact Family File gives it
a bit more compression by cleaning up "empty spaces" within the file.

Re: [LegacyUG] selecting a few new people to upload to ancestry

2012-04-13 Thread Ron Ferguson
You cannot, or at least could not - I have a tree on the Ancestry site but
stopped subscribing over a year ago. If you have previously been adding them
to Ancestry and then creating a GEDCOM for download to Legacy, I would
suggest that you consider adding the details to Legacy. The only way to get
these onto Ancestry is to create a GEDCOM of the full .fdb file and upload
to Ancestry.

I do not think you can just add new records, and I think that you have to
delete the contents of your Ancestry Tree first. This may have changed over
the last year, but hopefully somebody with more up to date knowledge can
help on this point.

Yes, I am confusing the two Brian. But I think I am good now.
Legacy.fdb is how you save your tree and how you open it on a thumb
drive on another computer. Gedcom is to transfer from different
software.

Go to File > Backup Family File
You should see the path where Legacy is going to store your backup file
just below the button which says "Select Name and Location for Data Backup"
If the path is not where you want your backup stored click the button
and select the correct location.
Make sure there is a check mark in the Data Files box and in the

Please tell me if this is the correct way to save my family tree.

For backup, I want to make sure it backs up onto my thumb drive. Than
I also want to export it to a gedcom, so I have that also for back up
and to put the updates on the other compuer.

To get my family file onto my floppy to put on another computer, I
would click export to gedcom? Than open Legacy on the other computer
and than open the gedcom and save the family tree on the hard drive to
that computer?

Something strange in the air lately, I have done this so many times,

Re: [LegacyUG] Backup/Export

2012-04-13 Thread Ron Ferguson
Michele,

I think that the default for the backup is C\Legacy\Data, but would not swear
to this. In any event Jenny has advised how to see where your's is.

Nobody can say why your data is not on your other machine. However, to make
certain that it isn't I suggest that you use Windows Explorer to search for
"*.fdb" (no quotes) . If it is just point Legacy to it.

I have tried putting it in the Notes of the Location field, but personally I
like to see at a glance that I have the Plot #, so  personally I record it like

Your Family File can be backed up to wherever you decide to put it. I
can't tell you what the default is because I have long since changed it,
but when you select Backup from the File Menu the first screen which
appears has two wide bars across it, the upper one saying "Select name
and location for data backup" and the lower one saying "Select name and
location for multimedia backup." Immediately below each of these bars
you can read off where your backups are going to be saved, and with what
name, if you don't change anything. Whatever the filepath is, that is
where your last backup will be found.

[LegacyUG] Backup/Export

2012-04-13 Thread Michele S
So I backup my family file and have no idea where it is backing up to.
I have Windows 7 64 bit. So I decide it is probably better to export
to a gedcom file on a thumb drive, I have done this before. Today I
decide I better back up my family tree onto my thumb drive and update
the other computers. So here are my issues. I go to the other computer
and the family file is not on the computer, legacy is, but not my
family tree. Strange!

So am I doing something wrong? Can someone give me ideas on how to
properly back up my family tree, make sure it gets on my thumb drive
and why when I went on the other computer lagacy opens and can't find
the family file?

RE: [LegacyUG] Burial plot number

2012-04-13 Thread julia m

I am still on the fence about this: currently I use Burial Notes. But I'm
starting to consider putting them under a Cemetery Event because I usually run
a lot of family group sheets and all notes are tacked on at the end. However,
for a report like the Descendant Narrative, they are printed after the vital
stats.
I guess as everyone has suggested before, it's best to try it a few different
ways and print your reports to see what works best for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] 2 question re Legacy website Webinar page

2012-04-13 Thread Brian/Support
Legacy uses functions from IE that are part of Windows so when you
invoke a browser from the Legacy Home Tab it is IE that will open since
it is effectively IE that is opening the web site. If you want to open
your default browser to view webinars use Internet > Legacy Home Page to
open Firefox then use the menus on the home page to view webinars.

There is an Internet Setting for IE that is supposed to suppress the
display of those script error messages, unfortunately it does not always
work for the components of IE that are used by Legacy. We have a several
problem reports recorded for the script errors since they can occur in
several parts of Legacy, not just on the Legacy Home tab, but they are
still outstanding. I just added a new problem for the Legacy Home tab
since there has been no previously reported problems with script errors
there.

Re: [LegacyUG] 32 versus 64 bit

2012-04-13 Thread Sherry/Support
Lyn,

Legacy is a 32-bit program and runs perfectly on 64-bit WIndows Vista
or Windows 7. I have a *lot* of 32-bit programs on both of those
versions of Windows and have absolutely no problems. with the
programs.

64-bit Windows will run 32-bit programs just fine. I don't know what
those people were talking about.

You can't run 64-bit programs on a 32-bit computer, but you can run
32-bit programs on a 64-bit computer.

Just make sure you install Legacy as per the instructions at
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/helpWindows7andVista.asp.

Re: [LegacyUG] Going from 6.0 to 7.5

2012-04-13 Thread Sherry/Support
Before you do the upgrade, back up the Family File(s) by going to File
> Backup Family File since your file(s) will need to go through the
conversion process and this just gives you a little extra peace about
that.

Other than that. v7.5 will install right over your existing
installation of Legacy v6. No need to uninstall.

No "pitfalls". It should go really smooth.

We recommend that the multimedia files be kept in the appropriate
sub-folders in c:\Legacy = Docs, Pictures, Sounds and Videos. You can
always create additional sub-folders under those if you want. That
makes it much easier if you share your Family File and multimedia
files with others or move to a new computer.

[LegacyUG] Going from 6.0 to 7.5

I know I should have done this long ago, but I'm a professional procrastinator.

Would someone be kind enough to advise the best way to accomplish the
updating from 6.0 to the current version of Legacy? What pitfalls
can I expect along the way? Is there anything I can do in advance to
avoid problems during the upgrade?

I only have a few media files, so that shouldn't be a major
problem. But where is the best place to keep them so this and future
upgrades will go smoothly?

Thank you in advance for your help.

a suggestion to look at the locations associated with events "closest" to the
census year? (I'm assuming the program already "weights" the individual's own
events heavier than spouse, parents or children's events...?)

Keep in mind that Legacy is also checking surrounding family members (births of
children, etc.) for the report's evaluation. If there are no locations for
anyone surrounding the main person, then that person will not show up in the
report.

I can confirm that behaviour. Re-opening Legacy after it has been closed from a
snapped position (left or right) does result in it opening in the centre of the
screen with a default, Windows-assigned size. If re-opening after being closed
when snapped to top or bottom, Legacy does resume with the apparent maximised
size. However, after a subsequent restore, the window does not return to the
size and position that it had before being snapped to the top or bottom of the
screen.

Or were you talking about other sorts of Notes ? (I assumed it was Event Notes

Re: [LegacyUG] Census Tool failure?

2012-04-13 Thread Laird
Geoff, does this qualify for "locations for anyone surrounding the main person"
The person in the Family Group Record shown at the end of this message:
His Father and mother and two brothers have full details on birth, death and
locations. One sister has birth + location and the other sister has birth +
location and death date. The spouse has a name and no dates etc.
--
One example that was found by the census tool:
His father had birth+death date and birth location and the mother had
birth+death date.
The person found had birth and death dates without locations. He had 7 siblings
with no dates/no location to as much as birth+death date and no locations .

The tool logic seems inconsistent.

I feel like the tool should find people with birth and death dates that qualify
without any other requirements. It seems to me; if I do not select the "Search
List Option to Exclude individuals from the Search List with location
percentages less than: nn%" then I should get what I want. Isn't what that
option means?

Re: [LegacyUG] Window sizes

2012-04-13 Thread R G Strong-genes
Ron,
I am the original poster of this thread and as I said I only have one
monitor so it is not a "multiple monitor configuration problem! AND As I
said when ever Legacy has been snapped to either the left or right side of
the screen and closed from that position, it does not retain its pre-snapped
windows location. This location is supposed to be controlled by the
Legacy2.usr file and the recommended solution for this was to delete that
file and try it again. However, that does not resolve the problem. If I
unsnap the window it returns to the size and place that it was before being
snapped, however if it is closed from the snapped position it does not
retain the pre-snapped positions. Saying it is a windows problem seems in
error because all the other program windows return to their pre-snapped
positions not in a small 5 inch or less sized windows. So if anyone else can
confirm that this happens to them with a SINGLE monitor using the Windows 7
feature of snapping two windows side by side and then closing them from the
snapped positions and reopen the same program then let me know otherwise I
will just live with it. Just seems odd that it is only the Legacy program
window that does this. Seams like the Legacy2.usr file gets corrupted when
it is closed from the snapped position.

Michele,

Nope, the principle is the same. Why this hoary old chestnut continues to
appear on this list is rather beyond me. Windows configuration for multiple
screens is not a Legacy question but a Windows one. Googling "Windows:
multiple monitor configuration" will bring op loads of references for all
versions of Windows.

Did you know that you don't have to use the mouse for this? The Windows key
followed by one of the arrow keys has much the same effect.

I agree, I also put the details in the Location Field. After all it does
locate the grave. I suppose one could say that it is equivalent to a house

Many, including myself, put this type of information in location
fields. The benefits of using location are:
- Work in the most amount of reports (or at least it seems so to me,
haven't actually done a complete study of where notes show up)
- Can geocode and map specific locations in the same four part
location system used by Legacy

Examples (just made up for illustrations purposes):
St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, United States
St. Louis-1st Baptist Church, St. Louis County, Missouri, United States
St. Louis-101 Easy Street, St. Louis County, Missouri, United States
St. Louis-Bethal Cemetery Plot #42, St. Louis County, Missouri, United
States

Data entry in this style (my preference) keeps the four part system
used by legacy, and without the space between the dash sorts the plain
location at the top.

Were you aware that if you hover the mouse over the top or bottom border and
double-click, that the window will extend to the full height of the screen
whilst keeping the same width.

Yet, it is only the Legacy program window that opens in a 5 inch square
window, all the other programs open in their pre-snapped window size and
position when closed from the snapped position. So it seems that the Legacy
window does not remember it's pre-snapped window position if it is closed in
the snapped position.

Hi Russ,

I frequently "snap" various windows to one side, or to the top to
maximise. I do this with Legacy, and my computer remembers what I set
when it closes and opens as it was last left.

This sounds like a problem with your computer, rather than a Legacy
problem. :-(

But the main reason I wanted to reply, was to share this - did you know
you can "snap" a window using the keyboard, instead of the mouse? I
discovered it by accident a while ago, and now use it all the time, and
you might find it useful when your window(s) aren't displaying as you
want them to...

Hold down the Windows button and press one of the arrow keys. The left
arrow will send the window to the left half of the screen, the right
arrow to the right, and the up arrow will maximise the window.

This works in Windows 7, but I can't remember if it works in Vista or XP
- I don't have either of those here to check with at the moment, and
can't remember the results when I've tried it on other machines when
I've had the opportunity.

It's very quick and convenient. I use it in all sorts of situations,
including to resize the "save as" window when saving a new file.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Re: [LegacyUG] Census Tool failure?

2012-04-13 Thread Laird
Michele,
I did some more testing:
1. The census tool finds 1848 individuals for the 1930 census and I tagged these
with tag 2.

2. Next I did a Detailed Search >
 Look for whom?=Individual >Where to look= Birth Place>
How to look=Equal To>What to look for= blank, no entry here.
Second Condition: AND>
 Look for whom?=Individual >Where to look=Death Place>
How to look=Equal To>What to look for= blank, no entry here.
Third Condition: AND>
 Look for whom?=Individual >Where to look=Tag 2
 How to look=Equal To>What to look for=Tagged

This search finds 349 Individuals and I looked at about 20% of these. They do
have one or both dates and no location.

I have run check repair on this file.

That's one of the many questions which will provoke many different
answers and you take your pick which one you want to adopt yourself.

Personally, I put it in the Location field, along with the rest of the
address off the Cemetery - "Grave 112, Section 6, Flaybrick Hill
Cemetery, Birkenhead, Cheshire, England" for example. (In the Short
Location Name I abbreviate that to "112/6, Flayrick Hill Cemy,
Birkenhead, CHS.")

Nope, the principle is the same. Why this hoary old chestnut continues to

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Pictures

2012-04-13 Thread Sherry/Support
The solutions on the website *always* apply to the error number that
they're linked to and are the solutions we have found that usually
resolve the issue.

The steps on the website don't say to compact - they're

1. Repair Legacy by installing the update again
2. Reset the temp folder
3. Run check/repair

and if those steps don't work

4. Export to a new Family FIle.

Running Compact Family File is always a good idea to help keep your
file a smaller size. Check/Repair compacts it a bit but Compact
Family File gives it a bit more compression by cleaning up "empty
spaces" within the file.

You were - intentionally or otherwise - addressing yourself to *all*
subscribers to LUG. Think of it as either sending a mail with one "To"
and several "CC"s or as sending one with many "To"s. That is the nature
of a mailing list. (This falls into the first category.)

You may particularly want help from the sub-set of the group who are
3-monitor users but it is churlish to bluntly reject comments from
others who are only trying to assist - to assist you *and others* that is.

Re: [LegacyUG] Window sizes

2012-04-13 Thread Sherry/Support
I don't know what's going on with your computer, but Legacy is
behaving on mine. It could be something in the way your monitors are
set up.

Legacy's on my secondary monitor - I always keep my programs in a
window so I can scootch them between monitors.

I minimized Legacy to the toolbar, closed it from the toolbar and then
reopened it and it opened in the exact same window size that it
originally was on the secondary monitor.

If it's maximized when closing, then it reopens on the primary
monitor. I've found several programs work that way.

I think the problem is with your monitor/video card settings.

Sherry

Does it matter if it is 2 or 3? The principle is the same.

I only run two monitors but Legacy always opens on my laptop screen even if I

I don't think you can do anything about that.

RE: [LegacyUG] Census Tool failure?

If you have no location listed at all, then Legacy won't know that they should
be in a census. For example, would they be in a US census or a UK one? If the
person has no locations filled in at all how would Legacy know.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Census Tool failure?

I have 13,864 individuals in my database and I happened to notice a person that
wasn't listed in the census search list (see the Family Group Record below). I
didn't see any reason for this person to be missed. I exported this one person
to a Legacy file and the census tool still failed to list him. I didn't have
the "Exclude individuals from the Search List with location percentages
less than:" option selected.

I discovered if I add a birth or death location, the census tool will list him.
I don't know for a FACT where he was born or died so I am not going to enter a
location into my database. However I could make a guess when I do a census
search IF he were on the list. I feel confident this isn't the only person in
my database with dates but without a location.
I feel like this a problem that needs to be fixed. I am using
Legacy version 7.5.0.182

Anyone else think this is a problem?
Thanks, Laird
