Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy File Corrupted - Help!
Find the last people added to the old list. Save them. Then create a gedcom including only the new people. Trim this, and add in portions. This makes finding the scrambled parts easier. I am trying to find what other errors exist and correct them - a tedious process. Anyone have a suggestion for what happened? Any way to fix the database? However, if I have multiple people, Legacy does not allow me to add that second person from the Family View by clicking the picture frame. Re: [LegacyUG] Photo Naming Tip
I still aim for an expressive name for the file, but my folder structure comes into play here too. So... JohnDoe1890_FamilyPic.jpg will tell me the who and the what. It also tells me there where, the JohnDoe1890 folder. However, I'd need a readme or something with an explanation of my structure. It isn't that it is very complicated, but just may not be intuitive or expressive enough alone. FWIW, I use an electronic variation of the Mary Hill system - so surname base folders, direct ancestor sub-folders (co-laterals nested in them as needed), prefer direct descendant names (either male or female), and prefer male if a conflict (cousins marry). Family related info ends up in the head of houshold folder for sure. If I deem important enough, I may copy it to all family members as well (makes it easy to just do a copy/paste/zip/etc of a targeted branch). If I acquire something that spans multiple families or generations, that usually lands in the base surname folder (other relatives pedigrees or a copy of a downloadable google book, etc) I've never been asked how many census images I've collected, but have been asked what I have on John Doe. That's usually followed by a request for copies of some things. Most times these questions do not occur when I'm at home in front of my Legacy database. This structure and naming gives me the means to do an acceptable job answering these questions (especially with it mirrored in DropBox) no matter where I happen to be. Obviously, Legacy is more detailed, and I can always followup with more later. Anyway, works for me. On Sat, Jun 9, 2012 at 7:07 AM, M. RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage Banns
You can change the wording for any event. For a one time change, click on the tab Sentence Override and enter your own wording in the notes. If you have the Deluxe version, you can also click on the Edit Event Sentence Definition bar, copy the default definition, cancel out of the Sentence Definition screen, paste the default sentence definition into the Sentence Override space, and change the wording, using the correct fields, to suit you. for all occurences of the event by clicking on the Edit Event Sentence Definition bar and changing the default, which changes it for all instances of that event. If you want to change the wording for Marriage Banns, in the Event Definition list, cut [HeShe] and insert [They].You can change the default sentence wording of any default event, as well as add a new event (see Help, Event, Sentence). The Master Event Definition List is found by clicking the Master icon on the Toolbar. Re: [LegacyUG] Updating the details of sources
Suzanne, It would be helpful to know which type of Legacy sourcing you are using – Basic or Source Writer, and which country. So, I am assuming Source Writer, and as I am from England my knowledge is based on their census returns, but should be applicable elsewhere. I too have a Master Source for each census eg 1841, 1851 etc. and include in this only the information which is common to all the censuses, although I do include the place where I got the census details from in the Repository (eg. Ancestry, Findmypast etc.) which does mean that I have separate Master Sources for the census years and each repository. Having entered the first event(s) eg. names, date and place of birth, I click the blue arrow, select the Master Source, and complete the details for the specific census. On returning to the main page I click the single, or multiple, blue bar depending on the number of events which links the source to the event(s). To use this Source of other people simply click the appropriate bar for the Event(s). Note also that on the right of the Event screen there are paste/copy buttons which allow one to save a common Event (eg. Residence) to the Source Clipboard. This can then be used to enter the Event and Source to all relevant persons just be clicking the Copy button. RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage Banns
I only use it once - taking it as a single event spread over 3 weeks. Although the wording for the event is [HeShe] it reads as 'They'. Also, the default wording for the "Marriage Banns" event starts [HeShe] but surely banns are called for a couple? Any advice on the best way to record this would be appreciated. thanks Tony Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com).
