RE: [LegacyUG] Sources for pictures

2012-07-23 Thread Lee Bruch
Yes, below seems workable. Or like I do, you could buy a small portable hard
drive (they are now quite small physically but hold many GB) and carry that
with you plugging it into ea of your computers as you work. You would use that
as your own personal cloud, just like it were dropbox, etc. (Make sure each
computer remembers the portable hard drive with the same name).
Whatever you do, make sure you have a safe backup.

In regards to your photos it looked from your screenshot that you had your
linked files on at least 6 different drives. You said 3 computers so I'm
guessing the other 3 are external hard-drives or flash-drives. ??

I'm wondering if you have backups for any of these? Or are the files being used
directly from this variety of locations with no backup? That would be a bad
idea.

Are all the files in these different drive and folder locations linked into
your Legacy database? With 3 computers, the ones linked to Legacy need to be in
a location like a cloud service that's installed on each computer, OR an
external drive that you plug into each computer.

What I would suggest is that you put all your genealogy folders in one
location. For Legacy-linked files, will they fit into something like 2Gb free
on Dropbox or 5Gb free on Google Drive? That way you can link to them all at
that one location from your different computers.

Once you decide where they're going to be and put them there, you can go to
Options/Customize/Locations/View Current List of Multimedia Locations and
"Change" each file-path to point to where you've put the files. This will save
you having to re-link every one of them.

The IGI Search as it was is no longer available. The church is

[LegacyUG] Search the IGI

2012-07-23 Thread Tony Rolfe
Does anyone have any idea why the "Search > Search the IGI Website"
facility in Legacy is behaving peculiarly?

I used (several months ago) to be able to go there and then search for
the current person, simply by clicking "search".

Now, it starts up and, after 2-3 seconds, goes into the "waiting for a
family search imposed 33 second delay" countdown for 33 seconds, goes
into search mode for less than 1 second, repeats the countdown etc.

Nothing is able to complete.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Organizing pictures

2012-07-23 Thread Pat Hickin
I have a system that in some ways is simple; in some ways complicated.
Personally I LOVE it!

For ALL the pics in my Legacy family database I have them in a folder in My
Pictures called "LEGACY-P" (for paternal side). (I have my paternal &
maternal lines in separate databases--works for me)

For pictures that are NOT people I name them
__BKGR_COUNTRY_ST_COUNTY_name of picture,
or __BLDG_ COUNTRY_ST_COUNTY_ name of bldg,
or __CEM_ . . . ;
 __CENS;
__DOC, etc.

For people, I show how they're related to my paternal name (Prickett),
e.g.,\

P_McC_Be_WHITE_WALKER_Susan m HENRY (for one of my 4 grgr grandmothers.
(stands for Prickett, McConnell (my grandfather's wife; Beatie (her
mother), White (her mother), Walker (her mother, who married John Henry).

Whereas P_John b c1630 is my paternal 7x grgrandfather;
P_John b c1695 is my paternal 5x grgrandfather.

This system may sound complicated in a way, but it means I can locate all
sorts of different pictures very easily, and that people in the same family
are pretty much grouped together.

Incidentally when I compress a picture while saving it I add a '-cmpr' at
the end of the filename.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources for pictures

2012-07-23 Thread Brian/Support
The only thing included in the family file is a link to the photo file,
the photo's themselves are NOT included. The new backup in Legacy 7 will
backup both your data and your photo files but these are in two separate
.zip files, one for the data and the second for photos.

When you restore using Legacy you can only restore the data files. To
restore the photo files you have to extract them from the multimedia
backup .zip file using Windows or another .zip file manager. When
extracting the photo files if you restore them to the original paths
Legacy should find them. If you extract them to a different location
Legacy will not be able to find the files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources for pictures

2012-07-23 Thread Ron Ferguson
Marie,

I am unsure if we are talking about the same thing. The file name is the
name which you give to the picture when saving it eg. "JoeBlogs.jpg", the
folders will be different if you have a separate folder for each family, but
that constitutes part of the path not the file name eg. for a folder on your
C drive that would be C:\Blogs\JoeBlogs.jpg.

The point is that *if* and *only if* the file names are different for each
family member, then you could move them to the appropriate named family
folder. Then find a picture which Legacy has lost, opt to find it yourself,
and in the dialog which will be displayed go to the folder for that picture
and Legacy will then find all those in the folder.

As has already been said, if your family folders are put in the Legacy
Picture folder, usually at C:\Legacy\Pictures\, then it will be easy to
transfer them to another machine, and for Legacy to find them.

I hope that is clear

I think I have a very large mess. I made a screen capture [JPG] of the

I use the Legacy Archive a file when I'm done updating the project. I have

several projects going at one time. My Mom and Dad are separate as is my
husbands, a one name study and then my daughter in law and sons in law.
When I started 35 years ago with pencil and paper it didn't seem that big
a
deal.

I use "restore" in Legacy when I move the project from machine to machine.

Syble,

It rather depends on the terms & conditions of FindaGrave. I don't know
them, so I would suggest that you read them. Copyright of an image usually
belongs to the photographer (for a long, long time), but this may have been
passed to FindaGrave, who could then apply their own conditions for

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Snipit in Legacy-copyright

2012-07-23 Thread Mary Trogg
Maybe I can clear a few things up about find A Grave.

Yes, it is permissible to use the photos, for personal use in Legacy. I
do it all the time. You just can't re-publish without permission. Check
the contributor's page for permission. I use the grave template in
Source writer and credit the photographer. This is because the copyright
remains with the photographer. If there is a bio on the page, I also
cite the memorial manager. Find A Grave keeps a copyright only for their
format.

Off topic, Find A Grave has NOT transferred rights to Ancestry. Ancestry
is browsing the site, much like Google and posting links to pages. They
have not posted photos. If someone has used your photos, you will have
to file a take-down claim with Ancestry and they will be removed. You
may email me for directions.

2012-07-23 Thread Syble Glasscock
Yes, I understand and do cite the data from findagrave into Legacy. My concern
came with the Snipits. It's a great way to capture in the form of a jpg the
information, not the photo for our Legacy files.

I guess from the line below  that the information then becomes the property of
findagrave, I'd not seen this,  "Please feel free to cite Find A Grave in your
bibliographies, lists of references, etc. in whatever format you deem
appropriate."  Whatever format, should include Snipits.

I've submitted much information to their website, including two cemetery
surveys with photos of each tombstone, and was a little annoyed that they gave
the rights to others like ancestry.com, and I've found many of my photos
without my consent on ancestry family trees and no mention of where the photo
came from.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Snipit in Legacy-copyright

2012-07-23 Thread Jack Earnshaw
On their web site there is an FAQ section which includes

How do I cite Find A Grave in a bibliography?
Please feel free to cite Find A Grave in your bibliographies, lists of
references, etc. in whatever format you deem appropriate. Please note that,
while Jim Tipton is the creator of Find A Grave, he is not the author of all of
the content. If the information you are referencing includes a "bio by XXX"
line, please cite that author as well.
Sample citation: Bio Author. "Web Page Title". Find A Grave. Date of (your)
access.
Sample citation: Bio Author. "John Doe". Find A Grave
 . 6-1-2008. [Top
 ]

So, it would appear that they are happy for you to cite the data you find

In a word, yes.

Whenever a work is created it is the copyright of the person who
created it. A work can be a photograph, painting, poem, novel or this
email.

If you need to ask the question, you already know the answer or
suspect what it is, therefore, it is always best to ask the copyright
holder if you can use the information. Nine tenths of the time you
will be allowed to do so, so long as you acknowledge the source. The
tenth time will either be a categoric "no" (in which case respect it)
or you'll be asked for a fee.

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Snipit in Legacy-copyright

2012-07-23 Thread Ron Ferguson
Syble,

It rather depends on the terms & conditions of FindaGrave. I don't know
them, so I would suggest that you read them. Copyright of an image usually
belongs to the photographer (for a long, long time), but this may have been
passed to FindaGrave, who could then apply their own conditions for
reproduction.

I think I have a very large mess. I made a screen capture [JPG] of the
listings and they appear to be all over the place.

I use the Legacy Archive a file when I'm done updating the project. I have
several projects going at one time. My Mom and Dad are separate as is my
husbands, a one name study and then my daughter in law and sons in law.
When I started 35 years ago with pencil and paper it didn't seem that big a
deal.

I use "restore" in Legacy when I move the project from machine to machine.

As to path I don't have a clue. I just scanned them and assumed they would

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources for pictures

2012-07-23 Thread JLB
No attachments please. It's against the LUG guidelines.

I guess you could try moving them into one location. Or leave them where
they are. "Assuming" they're going to go into a specific folder such as
Legacy is not working obviously. If you keep them all in a folder in
Dropbox, for instance, you could link to them from there and that might
work on all your computers. I don't understand your setup overall; i.e.
how you're syncing between three computers.

Hi,

The most likely reason, I think, is that the full file path to the
pictures is different on the two computers.

If you have the pictures in the 'user profile area' like 'My Pictures' or
'Pictures', the full file path is often different from computer to
computer, depending upon user name and version of Windows.

If you have the pictures outside of your user profile (e.g. in
C:\Legacy\Pictures) you will not have that problem as the path would be the
same on
both computers.

What you do about it depends upon whether this is a onetime transfer, or
whether you want to run Legacy on two computers (e.g. a desktop and a

RE: [LegacyUG] Sources for pictures

2012-07-23 Thread Paul Gray
Hi,

The most likely reason, I think, is that the full file path to the pictures is
different on the two computers.

If you have the pictures in the 'user profile area' like 'My Pictures' or
'Pictures', the full file path is often different from computer to computer,
depending upon user name and version of Windows.

If you have the pictures outside of your user profile (e.g. in
C:\Legacy\Pictures) you will not have that problem as the path would be the
same on both computers.

What you do about it depends upon whether this is a onetime transfer, or
whether you want to run Legacy on two computers (e.g. a desktop and a laptop).

If you could say where your pictures are stored, and what you want to do in the
future, we could give more specific next steps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding resource document

2012-07-23 Thread MVMcgrs

I'm coming in a little late to this discussion. The number of rolls is not
as important as the state, county, city/town, ED number in the later
census records, page number and line number.

On the 1930 and 1940 census Ancestry leave off the first numbers of the
ED. Enumeration District: 81 is actually Enumeration District: 11 - 81. 1930,
NJ.

Family Search, Archives.com, and Fold3 give the full ED number. You want
to leave enough information for that person to be located again.

You can add "Digital image downloaded from _www.ancestry.com_
(http://www.ancestry.com) on [date]" That gives the credit to Ancestry but
also gives
the exact information

Don't give in that easy :) Just remember the National Archives in your
Source and Citation.

Ancestry deserves the credit if that is where you saw the image. Just
remember, make sure there is enough information to be able for someone
else to direct them to the actual document(s) (National Archives) to
find the census.

images. Ancestry.com. http://www.ancestry.com: 2007. From the National
Archives microfilm publication. T1, roll 123.

Then... Cite

1800 U.S. census, Iron County, Utah, population schedule, Enumeration
District 888, p.65, dwelling 345, family

You can see one can find the Source of the information and detailed
(citation) and still give Ancestry the credit. If they go out of
business, one can still find the census.

I think the Source Writer will guide you.

Hi Charles,

Thank you for testing. I was aware that PDF text files could be stored in
the file area and would open fine with Acrobat Reader et al. What I had
never tried was using a PDF image. I could see no reason why it wouldn't
work, and included the minor qualification for that reason. Ian has also
confirmed that PDF images work fine.

For those that may be interested, I ran another test using the source detail in
Legacy; however, this time I used a PDF form that I had made so that
information could be entered into the relevant fields of the PDF form. In this
case it was an "Individual Worksheet" designed for collecting information on
any given individual. It also opens from Legacy with Adobe Acrobat and allows
one to complete the relevant fields. This may be beneficial to some Legacy

Re: [LegacyUG] How to specify the size of a chart, first.

Joshua,

You do not say which "charting software" you are referring to. If Legacy
Charting, which is included free with Legacy then you can adjust the
appearance using the Appearance Tab - I have just looked at a small 3
generation descendant chart which I was able to enlarge to abt. 49"x24",
without effort.

I suspect that I could manually adjust this further should I play around.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How to specify the size of a chart, first.

I just updated to Legacy 7.5 and treated myself to the charting software as
well.
So I have a couple of questions about making charts.

What I want to do, is choose a size for a chart (like 4 feet wide and 3 feet
tall, or 14 inches wide by 11 inches high) and then experiment with
different numbers of generations and different data on each person and
different people, until I end up with a good looking chart. However, I'm
having a lot of trouble with that, because it looks like Legacy Charts
thinks in the opposite way: It wants to know how many generations, what
data, etc, and then tells you how big the chart will be). If I want a 4
foot by 3 foot chart but only six generations, that means I want lots of
space per generation, but the charting software doesn't do that.

So is there a way to set the page size first, and then see how much chart
you can "stuff in" to that sized page?

Also, these specific questions:

Lets say I create a fan chart, and it is about 25 inches in diameter.
However, I'm going to have it printed on a 4 foot by 3 foot sheet of paper,
by generating a PDF and then taking it to a print shop. Is there any way to
get the pie chart in the middle of the PDF? Right now, it is always in the
upper left corner.

Can I print out events on a chart? So people who have an immigration event
will say "Immigrated 1921" (or whatever). It might be best of all to have a
special event/fact just for that purpose. Something like "Chart Caption"
and just have my chart print out the description field of that.

It would also be nice to color code one person's background or text based on
events. So relatives with military service would be in bold, or in red, or
maybe have red background, or something like that. Immigrants might be in
blue, that sort of thing.

Any way to do any of this?

Thanks for any help.
